Monday 22nd April

A small Easter Bank Holiday show saw Prime Cattle sell to 175ppk (£1109) for a strong 630kg Limousin steer (29m) from

Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton whilst Simmental heifers (23m) from Robert & Janet Legg of Exeter drew £1111. Aberdeen Angus steers (24m) from WR & AR Bater of Umberleigh realised £1116 with best ‘OTM’ cattle levelling out at £1085 for John

Hodder, Modbury with a Simmental Steer (38m). Barren Cows sold to 127ppk (£898) given for a British Blue from Robert & Janet Legg again, followed by Simmental barreners at 116ppk for WJ Berry & Son of Kenn and South Devon’s reaching 108ppk

and 107ppk for keith Rowell, Crockernwell and Adcock & Wotton of Moretonhampstead respectively.

Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday’s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers.

Please contact the Market Office (01392 251261) or Robert Armstrong over the weekend (07791484290) or

Also note, TB pre movement tests are NOT REQUIRED for this sale.

Lambs to £112.50 & 270ppk Hoggs to £115 & 221ppk

Cull Ewes to £118 & Rams to £105

A reduced but pleasing entry of spring lambs sold way ahead of

expectations in front of a reduced audience of buyers. The entry consisted of mainly export weight lambs which were just what were wanted by the

three main bulk buyers who competed well throughout resulting in the 1012 spring lambs levelling at 251ppk, up 6p on the week. Top price per

head went to Steve & Sandra Prettejohn of Aylesbeare with their usual quality Charollais bred lambs weighing 48kgs and achieving £112.50 whilst

lighter ones from the same good home took top price per kilo of 270ppk when flashy 41kgs made £110.50.

Fewer heavy and overweight lambs met a mixed trade comparable to the hoggs with 54kg+ at £108.50 for Mike Waycott of Ashburton and £106 for M Orchard of East Budleigh and a single 52kg lamb made £107.50 for Rob

& SJ Baker of Kingsbridge. 47kgs at £108.50 for Tom Yandle of Mamhead and 46kgs at £108 for Rich Berry of Kenn. A smart pair of 44kg lambs again

from Tom Yandle climbed to £111 as 45kgs sold to £109.50 again from Steve & Sandra Prettejohn and £108.50 for AM Chatfield of Cheriton

Bishop. Further 44kgs at £108 for Barry Mildon & family of Cadbury and 43kgs peaked at £109 for both M Orchard and Michael Down of

Payhembury. Barry Mildon & family also had top price 42kgs being £107.50 and similarly Michael Down had second best 41kg price when his Texel’s out of Suffolk mules made £106.50 (260ppk). Plenty of

smart 40kg lambs over the 250ppk mark (£100) selling to a top of £107.20 (268ppk) for Sarah Chambers of East Allington, £104 for John Attree of Harbertonford and £103.80 for Friend & Reeve of Sandford (both 260ppk). Plenty of trade of tidy light export

weight lambs (37-39kgs) from 258-266ppk or £98 to £102, with 39kgs topping at £103.20 (265ppk) for John Cowell of Black Dog, £102.80 (264ppk) for Dan Gould of Blagdon Hill, £102.50 (263ppk) for Ian & Sue Tall of Modbury and £102 (262ppk) for

Jerry Brook of Crediton. 38kgs to £100.80 (265ppk) for Michael Down and £100 & £99.20 (263 & 261ppk) for Graham Reed of Bickleigh. Jerry Brook also sold 37kg Dorset lambs well at £99.20 (268ppk) as did Graham Reed with his best at £96.80 (262ppk)

and Ben Watts of Ashburton sold sweet 36kgs at £94.20 (262ppk).

A smaller bank holidy entry of 500 hoggs worked into a decent trade with smart overweight pure Suffolks from Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough topping the sale at £115 followed closely by their two pens of Beltex’s which both made £99. Other overweights sold at £98.50 for HJ Widdicombe & Sons of Totnes, £98 twice for Roger Rottenbury of Black Dog, £97.50 for Phil

Lee of Tedburn St Mary and £97 for Michael Rice of Crediton. Majority of others £88 to £96. 50-52kg sold to £98 for ER Rosewell of Luppitt and £96 for both CJ & PJ Greenslade of Cullompton and Chris Hayter of Haccombe as 46-47kg sold to £95

& £92 for Graham Parker of Burrington and £94 (204ppk) for Richard Yabsley of Dartmouth. 45kg hoggs soared to £97.20 (216ppk) for Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn St Mary and £94 (209ppk) for both Mick Branton of Dunsford and Graham Parker.

44kgs also to £94 (214ppk) for Stuart Shilston of Moretonhampstead, £93.80 (213ppk) for Abel Bros of Tavistock and £93 (211ppk) again for Michael Rice. 40kgs provided the top pence per kilo when A Wotton of Kingsbridge claimed £88.50 (221ppk)

for theirs and lighter 38kg hill bred hoggs sold to £78.50 & £76.20 (207 & 201ppk) again for Abel Bros who also had 34kg Scotch hoggs at £73 (215ppk).

** Please note - After long discussions, dragging feet and empty promises between Industry leaders, Defra and the

Food Standards Agency.... Defra have decided to make a U-turn on their decision made at the end of 2018 about

ageing prime sheep by date, not dentition. The Livestock Auctioneers Association who were a key driver behind the

proposed changes, were told by George Eustice, Lord Gardiner and Christine Middlemiss (Chief Veterinary Officer)

that a change in the rules at this time (as we prepare to leave the EU) would “muddy the waters” and could impact

on the UK’s future access to the EU market. This means WE WILL CONTINUE TO MOUTH SHEEP and sell those

cutting mature teeth separately

751 cull sheep were just the right number in front of fewer buyers but a generally similar trade. A pure Texel ewe topped at £118 for Ben Watts of

Ashburton followed by other Texel & Charollais’ at £111 for Kevin & Becky Matthews of Launceston and further Texel’s at £110 for CJ & PJ Greenslade.

Pure Suffolk ewes to £107 for Guy Goldring of Ashburton as Suffolk crosses sold to £100.50 & £96 for HJ Widdicombe & Sons, £100 for Adrian & Julie

Rich of Halwell, £99.50 for Texel crosses from CJ & PJ Greenslade and £98 for R & P Farming of Mamhead. Overfat ewes slightly better to sell but lean and plain ewes continue to look very dear in comparison. Mules often mid £70’s with a few weighty but lean types £81 or £82. Hill sheep keenly sought after and either side of £50 depending on weight and cover. Rams to £105 for

a sizable Suffolk from FG & LA Nott of Meshaw followed by a brace of Cheviots at £90 for Julie Williams of Ilsington and all cull sheep averaged a nearly identical £74.

** Reminder that Cull Ewes are not to be presented for sale heavy in lamb**

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance

As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a

vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
