Lambs to £230 & 469ppk

Cull Ewes to £113.50 & Rams to £124.50

The Millionth Sheep sold by Kivells at Exeter Livestock Centre was sold

mid-way through the lamb sale today in front of a good crowd of on-

lookers and busy pack of buyers. After five and a half years at the Centre

and selling an average of just under 3500 sheep per week the momentous

lamb was a 49kg Suffolk cross Mule wether consigned by Derek Reddaway

of Harberton and after hearty bidding sold to The Butchers at Darts Farm,

Topsham for £230 (469ppk). Kivells matched that sum with a donation of

£230 to the Devon Air Ambulance, a charity chosen by both the purchaser

and vendor; and they both left with rosettes, sashes and an engraved

wooden carving board as a memento.

Away from the special lamb heavier sorts at 50-51kg lambs sold to £85.20 for Phil Lockyer of Cheriton Bishop, £85 for

Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne and £83 for a penful from Derek Reddaway. 49kg lambs at £83 for Dave & Julie Pook

of Chudleigh, £82.50 for Butt Bros of Cadeleigh and £82.20 for John Quick of Coldridge who also sold two pens of 48kgs

at £80.80, with plenty of other 48-54kg lambs at or around £80. 47kgs sold to £84.50 for two pens of smart continental

bred lambs from Mark Harvey of Slapton who also sold 45kgs at £83.50 (186ppk) and 46kg lambs reached £80.20 for

Mick Branton of Dunsford. Further pens of 45kg lambs at £82 (182ppk) for Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton, £79.50 for

both John Attree of Harbertonford and Graham Parker of Burrington as the second highest pence per kilo of 187ppk

went to shapely 43kg lambs (£80.50) and came from Roger Coysh of Bickington. Best of the 40kg lambs rose to £71.80

(180ppk) for Mary Curtis of Cadeleigh and £71 for Arthur Palmer of West Alvington as 39kgs hit £66.80 for David & Sue

Warren of South Brent and 38kgs made £66.50 for JR Clark of Spreyton. Lighter still, 37kg Whiteface Dartmoor’s from

Heather Bond & Daughters of Bovey Tracey achieved £62.50, a price matched by Phil Hutchings and family of Chagford

with Beulah’s of the same weight, whilst Brian Warne of Manaton sold 35kgs at £60.50 and J Hastie of Wiveliscombe

sold 34kgs at £59.20 as well as 31kg lambs at £56.80 or 183ppk. SQQ was 6 pence better at 171ppk.

One short of 800 cull sheep met a similarly strong trade, especially for the medium and better end sorts. Smaller hill

ewes and plain ewes continue to struggle in comparison and today saw an increased entry of these sorts. Rams in strong

demand and topping the trade were a trio of worked Charollais’ from Tom Yandle of Mamhead at £124.50 who also had

a pair of lean Suffolk’s well sold at £110 and a crossbred ram at £105. A large Hampshire ram from Rob & Sue Small of

Ashburton made £118.50, Becky Moody of Tedburn St Mary sold her Charollais at £117.50 and Phil Hutchings and family

parted with a Cheviot ram at £100. Plenty of other rams and wethers from £50 to £80 including a pair of Swale rams

from Neil & Mat Cole of Yelverton at £76.50. Best of the ewes were mainly Suffolk crosses, reaching £113.50, £97 &

£94 for JT Venning & Son of Fowey, £109 & £93 for Alf & Peter Lewis of Cheriton Fitzpaine, £108.50 for Tom Yandle.

Bradley Bowden had a pure Texel at £103.50, Dan Kingdom of Pennymoor had a single Suffolk cross ewe at £103 and

plenty of others sold from £94 to £99. Dorset’s to £89.50 for CJ & MJ Campbell of Yealmpton as mules were a much

improved trade rising to £84.50 for Seward Folland of Puddington, £83.50 for Phil & Kaye Taylor of Dunsford and £82

for Milborne Wick Farms. Hill sheep were out in abundance of all breeds and sizes, Whiteface Dartmoor’s to £52.50 for

Margaret Lugger of Modbury and £50 for the Caunter family of Ipplepen as strong swale ewes reached £45 for Neil &

Mat Cole of Yelverton. Overall average across the board of £56 is back £2 on the week, due entirely to quality forward.

Autumn is now in full swing and so far has proven to be a real wash out, with the wet weather hampering any attempt to proceed with autumn cultivations during October. Thankfully, as we enter November, the weather seems to be settling down, which will hopefully allow for winter crops to be sown and established with as few problems as possible. The recent announcement that an extra £40 million is being made available for farm productivity grants in the next stage of the Countryside Productivity Scheme is certainly pleasing. The money available is aimed to allow farmers to invest in a range of technology including robotic equipment and systems to aid livestock and crop production and to improve the use of renewable energy produced on farm by improving energy storage and distribution. Examples of eligible projects include robotic milking, slurry handling, harvesting and weeding equipment, and electrical battery storage systems to allow for better use of renewable energy that is produced on farm. The grants cover 40% of eligible costs with the minimum grant available being £35,000, meaning the minimum total investment needs to be worth £87,500 to be eligible for funding. Thus, if you are considering investing in farm technology that meets the above criteria it would certainly be worth looking into these farm productivity grants. If you would like any further information on these grants or any help in applying please contact your local Kivell Rural Professional office, we would be more than happy to help. The deadline for applications is December 2018 but each application will be considered as they are submitted. For those of you who may be interested in smaller scale farm grants, the LEADER grants may be better suited to you. Project eligibility and funding levels vary between local action groups but examples of projects eligible for funding include equipment to improve animal welfare, such as enhanced livestock handling equipment and calving detectors; equipment to increase the efficiency of energy, water and fertiliser usages such as LED livestock housing and pig/poultry water filtration systems. Unfortunately, the grant does not cover equipment that has already been bought, but if you are thinking of investing in some new equipment it may be worthwhile looking into the LEADER grants to see if your project would be eligible for funding. If you require any assistance please do contact your local Kivells Rural Professional office via the contact details over leaf. For the sheep farmers amongst you, you should be receiving your annual sheep inventory forms from DEFRA in the post or via email by the end of November. It is important to complete and return your inventory to DEFRA by 31st December 2017 as failing to do so will increase your chance of a Basic Payment Scheme inspection. After you have completed your inventory, you must remember to include your annual inventory total (as at 1st December 2017) in your holding

register in order to comply with Statutory Management Requirement 8: Sheep and Goat Identification of Cross Compliance. For those of you whose land is situated within Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) remember that grassland derogations for 2018 are now open and close on 29th December 2017. If you are successful in applying for a grassland derogation, the limit of spreading 170kg per hectare of nitrogen in livestock manure increases to 250kg for grazing livestock manure. If you wish to apply for a grassland derogation for 2018 you need to be in touch with the Environment Agency before the application window closes, and remember that if you applied for derogation in 2017 you will need to re-apply for 2018 if you would like another derogation. With December now just around the corner, so too is the Basic Payment Scheme payment window, which duly opens on 1st December 2017. The exchange rate for this year’s payments has been set at €1 = £0.89470, which means an increase of about 5% on last year’s payment and so this year payments should average approximately £90 per acre. Here’s hoping the Rural Payments Agency makes payments promptly this year.
