Steers to £1270 Heifers to £1040

All of the talk about demand lessoning due to the weather was soon dispelled on Friday with bigger numbers about and a

much stronger trade for a good quality entry. Best store steers rose to £1270 for a grand trio of Angus (27m) from

Gemma Tooze of Broadsands with a pen of four younger but smart sorts (18m) from Peter Hendy, Staddiscombe Plymouth

selling at £1240 apiece. Three strong Blue bullocks (27m) from DJ & SL Kittow, Withleigh saw £1190 a life whilst Clive

Timms of Inwardleigh sold Charolais steers (18m) to £1120 and Limousin’s (20m) for £1100. Several young but very well

bred suckler typed forward with exceptional Charolais yearlings from Peter Heard of Okehampton easing to £1105 a head

(x7) and a super Limousin steer of a similar age from Nat Clifford, Moretonhampstead reaching a very decent £1045. Not

many forward Holstein Friesian bullocks on offer although a bunch of well farmed types (24m) from Tony West of South

Zeal looked good money at £820 apiece. In the absence of any near finished store heifers the best still rose to £1040 for

Devon’s (27m) from Richard Hill of Dunsford who also saw £970 for a shapely Blue (17m) whilst more smart heifers drew

£980 for a single Charolais (17m) and £950 for a pen of five cracking Limousin’s both from Clive Timms. Other bunches

of Limousin females worth a mention included ones at £965 (25m) from both Jonathan Lentern of Chagford and Geoff &

Marie Sharam of Dartmouth. Later born heifers saw a tremendous top of £880 for well bred and reared Charolais yearlings

from Peter Heard.

Another excellent summer show of youngstock saw Limousin steers (10m) from Martin Daw, Ugborough top at £785

whilst young South Devon bred sorts from Miles & Helen Partridge of Poundsgate drew £775 for pen of three. A terrific

run of summer 2017 born cattle from David & Justine Colton off high ground of Princetown saw bunches of ‘named sired’

Angus steers rise to £730 (x9) with younger (8m) Angus to £655 for Ed & Julie Williams of Ilsington. Heifer stirks saw a

high of £770 for a couple of smart Limousin’s from G Martyn & Sons, Boyton whilst a pair of neat South Devon females

(10m) reached £620 for Paul Bowden of Ashburton. Further Limousin sorts (11m) saw £615 for David & Justine Colton

and a pen of four Blonde heifers fetched £600 for Ed & Julie Williams.

An excellent entry of calves sold to a cracking trade

topping at £450 for a super Charolais bull from

Messrs KH & SA Toms of Meeth with others to

£365 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster. A

strong run of Simmental bulls to £430, £420, &

bulls to £405 for Mr FJ Luxmore & Son of Crediton,

£310 for Roger & Sam Parris of Stockland. Native

calves sold well with a super Aberdeen Angus bull

from Messrs Higgin of Totnes selling at £342 with

others to £290 for Messrs SEJ Tapp & Son.

Hereford bulls met exceptional demand topping at

£380 for a weaned Hereford bull from Best Farms

Partnership LTD with younger calves to £290 for Messrs Diepenbroek Farms LTD of Seaton with others to £280, £265 x

2 & £260 for Messrs KH & SA Toms and £260 for Waterford Farm Partnership of Axminster. Heifer calves met strong

A pleasing number of decent quality lambs sold to a good crowd of buyers who were all slightly hesitant due to the dry
