Prime Cattle to 208ppk Barren Cows to 142ppk

Several cattle about on Monday with any well fed and covered sorts again selling to a premium. Prime Cattle saw a top of 208ppk given firstly for a neat Limousin heifer (15m) from Shillingham Farm Partnership of Saltash and secondly for a very well

finished 650kg Angus steer (25m) from Arthur Henson of Washfield, the latter also saw a steer with the same comments realise £1408. Further nicely covered Angus prime steers (23m) from Reg Wills of Ashburton rose to 207ppk and 203ppk (£1247)

whilst a young muscled Limousin heifer (15m) from Harold & David Keast, Coldridge fetched 200ppk. Top total price realised was given for the better of a pair of grand steers from Douglas Horton of Kingsbridge with his 770kg Blue hitting £1458. As

seen of late Barren Cows saw demand slightly off the boil with best suckler sorts reaching 142ppk for a black Limousin cross from Paul Butt of Kingsbridge closely followed by a red Limousin at 137ppk for Edwin Tucker and Daughter Lynnette of Pennymoor. A lean Salers barrener from R & B Boundy of Winkleigh also drew 137ppk and Angus cows attained 133ppk (£943)

for Robert & William Reddaway of South Tawton, also Simmentals sold to 131ppk (£947) for Reg Wills. A portly Devon cow from Essebeare Farming, Witheridge was knocked down at 126ppk and levelled out at £966.

Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday’s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow

auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers.

Lambs to £104 & 201ppk Cull Ewes to £110 & Rams to £110

A similar number of varying quality sold at a slightly lower level to last week, although the standard of lambs wouldn’t match with still a high

percentage of stale and under finished sorts present. That said, some great runs of lambs included five pens of heavy and overweight lambs (51-65kgs)

from Ross & Helen May of Netherexe that topped the sale at £104, £102, £101.50 & £96 (x2). More 51kg nicely bred lambs at £93 for DJ & SJ Mills

of Lapford, closely followed by best of the 49kgs at £92.80 (189ppk) from Steve & Sandra Prettejohn of Aylesbeare as 48kg lambs made £88 for Paul Caunter of Sherford and £87 for Mark & Janet Causey of Rattery. Two

pens of the best 46kg lambs sold at £85 for both Foxworthy Estate of Manaton and Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough who also achieved £89.50 with smart 45kg Beltex sired lambs (199ppk) and

£88.50 of 44kgs or a sale topping 201ppk with the same good breeding. More 45kgs at £83.20 for FJ Hayball & Sons of Bickleigh and £83 for DJ & SJ Mills whilst next best 44kgs came from Luke & Rory Honeychurch of Spreyton at £82.20. Three smart pens

of 43kg Berrichon & Texel sired lambs from Derek Arnold of Morchard Road realised £85 & £83.80 twice (198 & 195ppk) and others of that weight sold at £81.80 for the Shinner family of Ermington and 42kgs rose to £77.80 for the Keast family of North

Tawton. 41kgs sold to £75.20 for Megan Dennis & Tom Curtis of Tedburn St Mary and 40kgs sold to £70 for both Kim Caunter of Harbertonford and Abel Bros of Tavistock. Lighter weight lambs saw 39kgs peak at £67.20 for Gerald & Linda Heywood of

Rackenford, £67 for Drake Bros of North Tawton and £66 for Steve & Jackie Mitchell of Pennymoor. SQQ is five pence less at 170ppk whilst the overall market average was 171.5ppk. A single prime hogg made £77.50 for M Vickery of Nomansland.

Numbers still coming forward and the trade for the better sheep is still just as strong. With the qurbani only three weeks away on 21st August, well

fleshed ewes need selling over the next two Mondays. A mixed pen of Charollais and Texel ewes from Kevin & Becky Matthews of Launceston

topped the sale at £110, followed closely by Patrick Toop of Yelverton with Suffolk crosses at £109.50, £107 & £100.50, a Texel cross ewe at £109 for Peter Bradley of Tedburn St Mary, penful of Suffolk crosses at £108 for PWJ & DEJ Vian of Gorran, similar

again at £105 for both Rothamsted Research of North Tawton and Cecil Partridge of Calverleigh. Another seven pens over £100, heavy Dorset’s often early to mid £90’s, best of the Mules selling into the mid £70’s frequently with the majority £66 to £72. Hill ewes are as they have been with the better end in the £40’s and early £50’s with leaner and lighter sorts regularly in

the £30’s. Plain ewes to graze out in abundance once again and meeting a slightly increased level of interest with plenty in the £40’s and £50’s. Best of the tups to £110 for Bradley Bowden of Drewsteignton with a shapely crossbred and Tom Yandle of

Mamhead sold a lean Suffolk well at £90. Overall average back, due mainly to quality.

Combines have started rolling across the countryside as this year’s tremendous weather has brought

harvesting perhaps two weeks forward compared to other years. Generally the rule of thumb back in the

South Hams, is that Winter Barley is rarely completed before Totnes Show, often being the last weekend

in July. Reports so far are slightly disappointing, with yields below the 3 tonne an acre mark and straw

not as thick as first thought. On a positive note for those arable farmers, prices for both look to remain

high throughout 2018.

Hot weather continues to be the topic of conversation with many livestock farmers having to feed

supplementary silage as the extreme temperatures have decimated grassland across the country. The

question lies with what weather we require for the next six weeks as arable crops have now past the

benefit of receiving a good drink, and how sunny days make harvest so much easier.

This spring has seen Kivells favoured on a number of sales concerning farms and land throughout Devon and Cornwall, with all offices recently launching a number of wonderful farms or country homes, which have received good interest. Concerns over Brexit and the land market haven’t seemed to have impacted on land values as much as perhaps first thought, with latest figures suggesting average land values remaining stable only dropping 0.6% in the last six months across GB. Going forward personally I feel land values will continue to hold their own and in particular we will see an ever increasing interest for farms with a large selection of incomes streams with buyers further afield looking to invest or relocate to the southwest. Furthermore with regards to those less commercial holdings often in need of repair we are seeing neighbouring parties often contesting with the intention of expanding what is currently already owned. If you are considering the sale of your property and require advice together with a market appraisal, please get in touch with your nearest office where one of the team will be delighted to help. Clients continue to get in contact with a variety of different matters, but recently, the importance of having an agent to deal with Compensation matters against an acquiring or governing body couldn’t have been made clearer. In this case I was asked to attend a site meeting whereby a company were looking to take access onto a client’s land for a period of 12 months and where looking to do so at little cost. After some time negotiating we have agreed on a fair licence fee for the client, covering all damages and losses incurred, agent fees are covered by the said company as are legal fees. We see on so many occasions in this profession companies intending to bulldoze their way in onto client’s land, to complete a job that will benefit them. It’s your land and you’re entitled to compensation! Going back to the arable sector and last month saw Kivells of Exeter conduct what was a very successful standing straw sale. You will have seen in the press from other firms alike that standing straw across the southwest has doubled in price from last year, following the high prices sold on the lorry back in the start of this year. Kicking off the first sale in this part of the country, Kivells achieved the following: 136 acres of winter barley averaged £115.61, 496 acres of winter wheat averaged £97.63, 313 acres of winter oats averaged £99.54 and 28 acres of spring barley averaged £33.57.

Rural Reflection July 2018

The summer of 2018 is proving to be a busy time for farm machinery sales with both the Holsworthy and Exeter team conducting a number of sales across Devon and Cornwall. Last month saw the Exeter team conduct the farm machinery sale at Pollardscombe Farm, Slapton. Pollardscombe Farm, being a good example of what our firm can undertake for you the client, from selling the livestock, the farm, and the machinery. Good prices were achieved throughout with a large attendance of both buyers and onlookers enjoying the June sunshine. Our next sale in the South Hams takes place on the 14th of July on behalf of Messrs HC Dayment & Son at Purston Barton, Blackawton. In the meantime the show season is in full swing and Kivells will be soon attending Launceston, Mid Devon, Honiton and Okehampton Show, we look forward to seeing you there.
