Prime Cattle to 204ppk and £1359 Barren Cows to 175ppk and £1471
A fantastic Monday morning in the cattle pens here at Exeter with a cracking entry of both prime cattle and barren cows
returning some tremendous returns. Prime rose to a high of 204ppk for an eye catching 668kg home bred Blonde steer (26m)

£1350 whilst a smart Limousin heifer (25m) from David & Steward Chapple of Cadeleigh hit the 200ppk mark and at 630kg
grossed at £1256. Plenty of other quality prime cattle selling towards 200ppk including Barry Mildon & family with two
well covered Limousin heifers (25m) both drawing 199ppk and to £1167 followed by British Blue steers at 198ppk for Rosie
Fishleigh of Sourton Cross and RJ Macbean & Son of Plymstock. Well finished Devon cattle from Philip Ayre of Black
Dog sold readily and to £1155 (610kg x 190ppk) for a heifer (27m) and to £1101 (572kg x 193ppk) for his steer (24m).

Spring Lambs to £129 & 301ppk Prime Hoggs to £109 & 218ppk Cull Ewes to £129.50 & Rams to £100
A super entry of just over 2000 springers were a trade to match with more
buyers forward again this week to help lift the trade by 5p to settle at
258ppk. All weights of properly finished lambs in high demand, just the
odd pen of lean unfed lambs or those on the thicker side meeting slight
resistance and hampering the average, but having said that the prices they
achieved they look well sold.
A tremendous single 53kg Texel lamb from Ben Roberts of Bradninch
topping todays trade at £129 closely followed by MA May & Son of
Copplestone with a pen of 54kg’s at £128.50, Roy Endacott of Spreyton
had a pair of 53kg Charollais reach £127.50 and Robin Irwin of Kings
Nympton parted with a 55kg Suffolk for £125. MA May & Son followed
up with a pen of 50kg lambs at £124.50 as well as smart 46kgs at £119
whilst some smart pens of 47kg lambs sold to £121.20 for David Pratt &
family of Huntsham, £119 for Jack Foan of Cheriton Fitzpaine and
£117.50 for Chris Wilton of Newton Abbot. Tom Yandle of Mamhead
and his wife Ellen presented 277 lambs between them for sale on
Monday with both topping an individual weight range, Tom selling his
best 45kg lambs well at £120 as Ellen sold smart 41kgs at a section
topping £115.50 (282ppk). More 45kgs at £116 for Michael Down of
Payhembury and £115.80 for Richard Pratt of Gittisham whilst 44kgs sold to £116 for both Peter & Andrew Baker of
Marldon and Phil Lee of Tedburn St Mary closely followed by Edward Pring of Broadclyst at £115.80 and Phil & Peggy
Keast of North Tawton at £115.50. Other 41kgs to £113.50 (277ppk) for Peace Farm of Bridport, £113.20 for Michael
Stanbury of Throwleigh and £113 again for Robin Irwin as 40kgs reached £109.80 for S & C Morgan of Kingsbridge and
£109.50 for Roger & Christine Hunt of Totnes. 39kg lambs peaked at £108 (277ppk) again for Richard Pratt followed by
both Angie & Rich Hunt of Stoke Gabriel and Syles Farm Ltd of Loxbeare at £107 with Rob Chanin of Thorverton at
£106.20. 38kgs were headed by Mike Pidsley of Payhembury realising £107 (282ppk) followed by Graham Hill of Wiggaton
at £105. Top pence per kilo for the day went to Sarah Chambers of East Allington with very sweet 35kg Blue Texels at
301ppk or £105.20 and another pen of similarly bred 36kg white lambs at £104.50 (290ppk).
Numbers drying up fast but certainly no shortage of demand with seven buyers still active on the hoggs. Dearest in the lump
was Mike Pidsley’s 58kg shapely hogg at £109 followed by a pair from Martin & Dave Sampson of Chudleigh at £108,
Reddaway Ltd of Honeychurch at £105, Tom Friend of Lydford at £104, Dennis Tapp of Rackenford at £102.50, Phil &
Peggy Keast at £102 and MC & M Jarvis of Chillington achieved £101. 48kg hoggs to £99.50 for Maurice & David
Wonnacott of South Zeal and £98 for Rich Berry of Kenn and a pair of smart 44kg hoggs from Sandra Osborn of Wilmington
topped the hoggs pence per kilo when they made £96 or 218ppk. Mature sheep dearer too, reaching £87 again for Mike
Pidsley and £81.50 for Barry Hansford of Ottery St Mary.

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS
A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.

691 PRIME LAMBS
Another quiet Monday in the sheep pens with 691 prime lambs selling at recent levels with a top of £86 for Texel x
50kg lambs from David Goss of Littlehempston who also had 51kg Charollais at £83.50 and smart 47kg continentals
1041 cull sheep were dearer than anticipated following reports from markets at the end of last week as next weekend’s
Ramadan celebrations mean demand is expected to drop suddenly at some point very soon. Best Texels to £129.50 for John
and Sue Robinson of Cruwys Morchard, £122 for Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton and £117 for Reddaway Ltd as lean meated
pure Suffolks achieved £126 for Guy Goldring of Ashburton and some smart Roussin’s claimed £114 & £110.50 for David
Pratt & family of Huntsham. Matt Wreyford of Blackawton had a Beltex ewe achieve £109 whilst Mike Pidsley had similar
at £105, a price matched by J Crooke & Sons of Sandford with the top priced crossbred ewes being strong Suffolk crosses.
Plenty of ewes from £98 to £104 including no less than 9 pens at £99. Dorset’s a straight trade too with a few buyers trying
to buy sheep for farmers looking to recycle anything straight and right. These often £75 to £88 depending on strength with
the odd pen early £90’s. Mules not so fortunate and generally all strength was around the £70 mark, with the odd pen of
heavy meated ewes touching £80. Hill ewes looking a good trade and as dear as we’ve seen them since the bubble burst
back in late March. Several pens selling in excess of £55 to a top of £59 for Swales from Tom Cleave of Broadhempston
with the majority £40 to £54. Rams a straight price too with more buyers on them than of late. Both Peter Baber of Christow
and WJ Perkins & Sons of Coryton claimed £100 for their best followed by Geoffrey Conn of St Ewe with a pair of Dorset’s
at £97.50. Overall average of £79 is up £7 on the week.
Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
