BEING A LEADER TIPS FROM SIMON SINEK
Great leaders inspire people to act and give people a sense of purpose or belonging
Leaders do not have to provide a course of action but must provide a cause of action
Provide a feeling of “we’re in this together” Start with the WHY – You must know WHY
you do WHAT you do
WHY
HOW
WHAT
WHY: beliefHOW: actions you take to realize a beliefWHAT: results of those actions
ENGAGING OTHERS & GETTING NEW MEMBERS
Key points to keeping and gaining membership:
1. Knowing and being able to vocalize your WHY
2. Motivation and A Sense of Belonging
3. Offering opportunities for people to increase their involvement (options/ levels of involvement)
4. Membership Appreciation5. Inclusivity
1. VOCALIZING YOUR WHY
In your group,
Each person will have 30 seconds to explain why their partner should join their club/ group or why it is important to them
2. MOTIVATION & A SENSE OF BELONGING
To get people involved or interested, people must feel that they are getting something.(Growth, Recognition, Achievement, Participation,
Enjoyment, Community)
You need to figure out what people want, but can meet some intrinsic needs in the
meantime.
Idea for understanding what people want:1. Asking directly (hopes)2. One on Ones3. Reflecting with current members
WAYS TO INCREASE MOTIVATION Develop a WHY and purpose Make people feel important – Affirm and praise people
as a whole and as individuals Give people credit and status for the work they do Communicate simply, transparently and authentically to
build trust and loyalty Consider and follow through on all members’
suggestions Give people a strong sense of community and belonging Use “We” statements (“I” statements for conflict) Play up the positives and not negatives Use members’ names and try to model inclusivity,
stepping outside of your social group and put the focus on the individual
Be fair and consistent
3. OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT Meet people where they are Offer many different levels of involvement
4 Useful Persuasion Techniques: Foot-in-the-door: Ask for less, increase request
Door-in-the-face: Ask for more, lower request
Low-ball: getting a yes and increasing it
Norm of reciprocity: I help you, you help me
4. MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION
How do we create opportunities to affirm our membership? What programs or incentives can we provide to appreciate the work and presence of members?
Remember: People need to feel important Give Praise Give People Status
5. INCLUSIVITY INCLUSIVITY WORKSHEET
How are we being inclusive in our space? Language? Publicity? Programs? Opportunities?
