    Forord

    English Abstract

This master thesis focuses on the unemployed citizens challenges in the modern society of

    today.

I will try to analyze which challenges the individuals who are outside the labor market and

thus stands in the middle of the crossfire of the internal - and external pressures, experienced

in their everyday life in the modern society of today, which are characterized by both the

    recession and unemployment.

In the first part of the thesis I present the problem area, including my problem: “The

unemployed citizens challenges in the modern society of today” and I presents the definition of

the thesis’ key concepts including; work norm, unemployment and recession, unemployment

insurance, challenges and everyday life, as well as a limitation of the problem.

In the second part of the thesis I review the research design and methodology of empirical

data. This section discusses the theoretical assumptions, the application of theory and

empirical data collection method and quality and ethical considerations. Throughout the

thesis I have used focus group interviews as a method, which is clearly examined as a method,

and strengths and weaknesses of the methodology are discussed.

In the thesis the third part, I present the chosen theories, which are “The theory of Stigma”, by

Erving Goffman (2009), “The Struggle of Recognition” by Axel Honneth (2003), “The Corrosion

of Character”, by Richard Sennett (1999) and “The Time Bind” By Arlie Rusell Hochschild

(2003). In this part I explain the theory of the content and theoretical concepts are clarified,

after which I explain the theory of the application in accordance with this thesis.

In the thesis’ part four theoretical concepts are used and they are confronted by the obtained

results by the empirical data from the focus group interviews and it is by this interaction, the

analysis is produced. Finally, in the last part of this thesis, I gather up the main results of the

analysis and I seek to summarize the theory of technical concepts and empirical findings that

may explain each other, according to the thesis’ problem.

Based on the thesis, I conclude that there is no definitive answer to the problem regarding

which challenges that fills most in the in the everyday life of the unemployed. However, I can

point out some trends which are based on the theories and which seems to be of importance

for the life of the unemployed and the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

This conclusion is followed by a perspective, with a discussion of the reflections, which have

arisen to me along the way as the study progressed, especially concerned about the method

    being used to collect data.
