CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 8, 23rd March 2018

Camperdown

The new location of the Junior Campus and perfect weather made ideal conditions for the Camperdown College Twilight Fair to once again be a huge success.

A fantastic turn out from students, staff, families and many members of the wider community, ensured the Fair was a fabulous event for the whole community to enjoy.

The kids were kept entertained by the miniature hot rods, giant slide, the Scout’s obstacle course, Lions Club merry go round, the dunking machine and the numerous fun activities organised by our dedicated staff and students; these were great crowd pleasers.

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,

aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.

From the Principal’s Desk…

As many of you are aware, the

weekend fires have impacted severely

on many families in the district,

including several staff members. We

offer our support and understanding to

all those affected; in particular to staff

members Vicki Angus, Linda Morgan

and Dayle Smithwick and families

who were directly impacted by the

fires. Peter Rock has kindly offered to

fill Vicki’s role as Assistant Principal at the Senior Campus,

while Vicki spends some time with her family. Vicki’s VCE

English classes will be well catered for in her absence by

experienced English teacher, Jeff Keith. Our SRC and JSC are

currently organising fundraising activities for affected staff

and I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to all

families and members of the wider community who have

contacted the school with offers of assistance. The support

shown to those affected is testament to the wonderful

community spirit we have here at Camperdown College.

The weather could not have been more favourable to us for

Friday night's Twilight Fair. The evening was a huge success,

providing hours of entertainment for everyone. It was a

fantastic evening with an array of delicious food, exciting

amusements and rides, staff and student run stalls and

wonderful displays and stalls from local businesses. An event

such as this would not be possible without the incredible

generosity of our Parents & Friends organising committee,

parents, staff, students and our sponsors. The Fair certainly

highlighted the strong partnership we enjoy with our families

and the wider school community. The gross takings from the

night were just shy of $15,000 (final expenses need to be

taken into account); what a great success!

We are indebted to the organising team comprising of Sheree

Horspole, Kasey Walsh, Dave Wilkinson, Kim Helmore,

Claire Kempton, Kellie Kempton, Paula Regan, Lisa

McDonald, Jane Bennett, Jocelyn Clark, Marie Jopling,

Jedda Couch and Sue Maskell. All worked tirelessly before,

during and after the Fair to ensure the success of the event.

The support from families who donated goods, baked for the

cake stall, manned stalls and assisted with the set up and

pack up was greatly appreciated. Sincere thanks also to our

dedicated staff and student helpers who assisted with the

evening. Please see the full list of sponsors in this week's

newsletter and show your appreciation by supporting these

businesses and organisations.

The School Council AGM was held on Wednesday evening.

Our 2018 School Council members are Darren Maskell,

Darren Teal, Victoria Winsall, Jane Bennett, Kim Helmore,

Fiona Fagan, Steve Pickles, Luke Webb, Fiona Crowle,

Kellie Kempton, Chris Brooks, Vicki Angus, Clare Monk

and Cherie Kilpatrick. We are delighted to welcome Luke

Webb onto Council for the first time. Congratulations to

Darren Maskell who was re-elected as School Council

President for 2018. Involvement in School Council is a

fabulous way to learn more about behind the scenes planning

and decision making and influence the future directions of

the school and I look forward to working with all members.

As Term 1 draws to a close I would like to congratulate

students on the positive manner in which they have started

the school year; some wonderful learning has occurred

personally, socially and academically. Next week individual

student success will be acknowledged at each campuses

Celebration Assembly. Parent attendance is strongly

encouraged and I hope to see many of you there. Thank you

to all students, staff, families and friends of the school who

have contributed to another busy and rewarding term.

It is my privilege to provide this snapshot from the Senior Campus as we head towards the end of Term 1, but,

not quite in the way it had planned. I will be acting in Vicki’s role for the remainder of this term and, like

everyone, really look forward to her return in the near future and the leadership that she provides for our

College.

As Clare has said, this is a very difficult and emotional time for many in our community and I would like to

acknowledge the approach and support of staff and students alike, along with our broader school community in

getting through these days.

Parent Teacher Interviews:

Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in the AG Daws Hall next Wednesday 28th March from 3.30pm until

6.30pm. All parents are requested to attend these interviews. Bookings for interviews are to be made through Compass. To access the

booking system:

If you are booking your interviews on your phone, it may be handy to open your app in a browser (click the three white lines at

the top left of the screen and then Open in Browser)

Click on the two headed icon at the top of the screen, and then Conferences (formally PST)

Under Conference Cycles, click on My Bookings beside Senior Campus Parent Teacher Interviews Term 1 2018

Click on the teacher that you’d like an interview with on the right hand side of the screen and then choose the appropriate time

(you can continue this for each teacher you’d like to meet with)

You can print a running sheet with your confirmed times by clicking Print Preview at the top of the grey screen

If you have any problems with the bookings, or would like to book over the phone, please call Christine at Senior Campus Office.

Greater Western Swimming:

We wish the three representatives who will be swimming in Ballarat on Friday every success as they complete at this next level.

Congratulations to Bailey McDonald, Riley Helmore and Jack Helmore on making it through to this competition.

Senior Campus Athletics Carnival:

The House Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday and was a great success under the direction of our Sports Coordinators, Nicole

McLennan and Grace Lee. A full report and photos will be included in the next big newsletter.

With the fires over the past few days, MRC was required to postpone their House Athletics Carnival until next week, when the

HSSSD Interschool Athletics Carnival was originally scheduled to be held. As a consequence of this, the HSSSD Athletics Carnival

will now be held on Tuesday 24th April, the second Tuesday of Term 2.

Celebration Assembly:

This wonderful event, to acknowledge the fantastic efforts and achievements throughout the College over the course of Term 1, will

take place on Wednesday 28th March, during Session 1. Our School Captains, Lauren McIlveen and Ethan Coates, will lead the

assembly as each teacher has the privilege of recognising the efforts of one student from their classes. In addition, we will also

recognise the attendance efforts of students for the first part of the 2018 school year reflecting our commitment to the mantra of, It’s

not OK to be away. In advance, congratulations to all students who receive awards, a significant acknowledgement of your work and a

great certificate to keep in your portfolio for the future.

Peter Rock, Acting Senior Campus Assistant Principal

Prep – Year 6 Athletics Carnival:

What a fabulous day we all had at our recent Athletics Carnival, with Manifold house taking home the shield.

The organisation of events, timetabling, supervision, scoring and age group supervision meant a smooth and

enjoyable day for all. A huge thank you to Warren Attrill, teachers and volunteer parents who assisted on the

day with age groups, individual events and scoring. Our Hands On Learning students from the Senior Campus

provided excellent support to teachers on the day and were excellent role models to our young people. All the

students tried their best and it was great to see and hear of stories of students helping each other out on the day.

Thank you also to our hard working Parents & Friends Association who worked tirelessly throughout the day

on the canteen keeping everyone well fed and hydrated and of course to all family members who attended to

support their children. Congratulations to students who were awarded age group champions: Nancy Leonard-

Pekin, Fletcher Tolland, Archie McLachlan-James, Corey Evans, Finn Tolland, Stella Horspole, Derek Macrae and Elyse Cross.

Yesterday a team of 32 athletes participated in the District Schools Athletic Carnival. All students represented Camperdown College

with great pride and sportsmanship.

Bombers Visit:

Our students were treated to a special visit from the Essendon Football Club last Tuesday. Players Jake Stringer, Devon Smith and

Andrew McGrath participated in a short question and answer session with Prep – Year 6 students. Students asked questions related to

their lives as AFL sportsmen prior to having an informal ‘kick to kick’ session at recess with students. The players then conducted a

skills clinic for all Year 3/4 students on the oval with many star-struck eyes evident amongst the students (and some teachers!)

Victorian State Schools Spectacular:

Our VSSS students participated in their first district rehearsal on Tuesday. Our school has again been accepted into the mass dance

section of the VSSS and we are excited to begin this year’s event. Kate Johnston is coordinating our students in the absence of

Annette Timilsina.

Parent Teacher Interviews:

Parent Teacher Interviews will be conducted next Wednesday 28th March from 1pm – 6pm for all teachers (excluding Graeme

Bennett). Due to prior commitments with our Senior Campus Production, Graeme will be available from 11am – 1pm and then again

from 3.30pm onwards. Time slots are now available to book via Compass. We strongly encourage our Year 5/6 students to

accompany parents so that they can showcase and discuss their Learning Cycles and work that they have uploaded to Compass. These

interviews are an important form of communication and we value the chance to speak with you regarding your child's academic,

personal and social progress. Please follow the steps below to make your bookings:

If you are booking your interviews on your phone, it may be handy to open your app in a browser (click the three white lines at

the top left of the screen and then Open in Browser)

You can print a running sheet with your confirmed time by clicking Print Preview at the top of the grey screen

If you have not yet signed up for Compass or are having trouble booking a time, please contact Amy in the Junior Campus Office for

assistance.

Headlice:

Please note that we have had several cases of reported headlice throughout the school over the past week. We ask families to check

their child/rens hair regularly and apply treatments as necessary. Control of headlice is a school community issue that can be

productively addressed only through a cooperative approach between parents, students and the school and I ask for your ongoing

assistance with this matter.

Imagi-NATION National Young Leaders Day:

Ms Norton and three of our school leaders, School Captains Ellie Cross and Perrie Winsall and JSC member Taylor Sanders, will

make their way to Melbourne on Monday to attend the Imagi-NATION National Young Leaders Day. Throughout the day students

will participate in keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive learning activities, which are all designed to assist students

to develop their leadership potential. Thank you to the Lions Club of Camperdown for once again sponsoring this special event for

our developing young leaders.

End Term 1:

Leading into the final week of Term 1, I would like to congratulate the students, parents and staff for a smooth and positive start to the

school year. To celebrate the end of term, staff have planned some special activities as we move towards the holidays. All students are

encouraged to bring along a hat from home to decorate, as well as flowers, streamers, feathers or anything else that could be useful

when decorating. Next Thursday morning there will be an Easter Bonnet Parade at 9.00am followed by a Celebration of Learning

Assembly at 9.30am in the BER building. During the assembly, Students of the Term will be presented with their certificates along

with those students who have achieved Golden Attendance (100%) awards. All parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend.

The JSC will also be holding a fundraising event and will be selling ice-creams for the cost of $1.00.

Home Reading:

A reminder that every student at Camperdown College should be reading every night and talking about or reading with their parents. I

cannot stress how important it is for you to show interest in your child’s reading & including the newspaper and footy

records....anything of interest to them. Reading aloud is also important for confidence, fluency and pronunciation. To borrow a quote

from well-known author Dr Seuss.

Please remember that reading at home should be with text they can read without a struggle. If it is too hard, they lose interest and

meaning. At school the teachers work with them on more challenging books and articles.

Clare Monk, Junior Campus Assistant Principal

Hurry, Tuesday 3rd April is the last day to earn vouchers at all Coles

Stores, through Coles Online or at Coles Express.

The local produce, variety of raffles/progressive auctions, our talented musical entertainers, not to mention Brooksy’s Fast Five challenge (where I heard that three local builders appeared to be competing against each other for fastest time) ensured we had something to offer for all age groups and kept everyone interested for hours.

It was impressive to see the wide variety of food options including baked potatoes, dim sims, hotdogs, slushies, popcorn, milkshakes, sushi and the new and exciting appearance of the very popular, design your own ice-cream/meringue stand.

I would like to tribute the success of the Twilight Fair to the dedicated team of Parent & Friends who have worked many dedicated hours to make the wonderful evening possible. A big thank you also to all the students and staff who contributed in so many different ways to make the Fair a fun and exciting place to be. Thanks to everyone who sponsored the evening, donated a plant, baked for the cake stall, gave up their time to man a stall, supervise or assist in anyway.

Thank you also to the dedicated Office staff. Amy at the Junior Campus for your very valued expertise and many hours of work. Also to Mardi and Christine for your assistance with all things finance. Many thanks to Warren Attrill on the microphone keeping the crowd informed and Clare Monk, Vicki Angus and Cherie Kilpatrick for your dedicated and ongoing support.

The gross profits from the night were just shy of $15,000. After final expenses are taken out, all profit made will be put towards new Instrumental Music room at the Senior Campus and re-developing the rear garden area at Junior Campus, ensuring the whole school community reaps the rewards.

Where are they now: Amanda Van den Berghe (2004)

After high school Amanda moved to Melbourne to attend university where

she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing) degree. Amanda has held many

different roles throughout her career across a variety of industries. She loves communications

and marketing because you can shift industries easily and the roles never get boring. Marketing

is a great mix of creative writing, graphic design, business and psychology watch Gruen and you

will understand!

In 2012 her role was one of many at Wiley publishers to be made redundant. She turned down an alternate role that was offered and

moved to England on a whim. Amanda travelled around Europe and then worked for a year in a pub in country England where she met

her soon-to-be husband. They moved into London and she then temped for the next year at both King's College London and the

International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA).

Amanda returned home when her visa ran out and spent a few months in Camperdown before moving back to Melbourne. From there she

worked in a social media role at a property investment company before moving to her current role with Macmillan publishers in South

Yarra. An avid reader, Amanda has found her home working amongst books all day long as a Marketing Executive with Macmillan

International Higher Education. She is a little more settled these days and bought a house last year in Melbourne. She has been in her

current role for over 2 years and has just returned from her first international work conference in Portugal.

Advice Amanda would have for current students:

Think about what you love doing and how you can work that into a career. There is so much possibility these days, for example

a role I have worked in (social media management) didn’t even exist when I was in high school!

Travel if you can, it changes your perspective in such a positive way.

And if you haven’t already read ‘The Barefoot Investor: The Only Money Guide You'll Ever Need’ it may not interest you right

now but you really will thank yourself in 5 years time!

If you’re reading this and you’re a former student of Camperdown College, please get in touch with us by sending an email to

[email protected] or connect with us on Facebook, like our page Camperdown College Alumni to stay up to date with

alumni connections to the school.

Camperdown College’s alumni community is growing and we will be sharing some Where are they now articles about past students. Get
