CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 10, 1st April 2021

Camperdown

The Prep students have been on many adventures and had lots of fun in their first term of school at Camperdown College. We cannot believe how much we have accomplished in the Prep room in such a short time.

We were even able to bring our favourite teddies to school. However, before they could go on a super cool adventure, our teddies had a nap in the reading corner until lunchtime ready to then go on a ‘Bear Hunt’. We have been learning about location and listening carefully to directions. We took our teddies on an adventure around the Junior Campus as we read We are going on a bear hunt. When they came to the playground, the teddies couldn’t go under it, they couldn’t go over it, so they had to go through it! We also had so much fun making a map of our adventure when we got back to our classroom.

We have also been learning a new High Frequency Word each week. One of our new words was ‘can’. The Prep students used their manners and asked Can I have a milo please? We were lucky enough to go into the staff room and enjoy a warm cup of milo.

To celebrate the end of Term 1 we had the opportunity to be part of an Easter Egg Hunt with the Leura House Captains on Monday. We showed the school values of Respect and Honesty during our hunt and enjoyed our Easter Eggs at the end!

From the Prep Room…

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,

aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.

Calendar

from the Principal’s Desk…

As noted at our end of term celebration

assemblies this week, it has been

tremendous to witness the successful

transition of our Prep and Year 7 students

into, respectively, primary and secondary

school. New opportunities have been

embraced and fresh challenges overcome

through personal courage and the support

of teachers, family and friends! Last

week’s Parent Teacher Interviews were a

highly appreciated opportunity for two-way and in many cases

three-way conversations about how we can continue to work

together to support all students to be happy and successful at

school.

Through Compass, our students have become accustomed to

tracking their achievements over time and setting personal

goals for continuous improvement. The next progress report

will be completed at the end of week two next term, so now

would be an ideal time for Year 3 – 12 students to revisit the

goals they recently set for improvement and ascertain whether

they are on track to achieve them.

All School Council positions for 2021 have now been filled,

with Kellie Kempton returning on behalf of our Parents &

Friends Association as the community member and Year 11

student Isaac Baulch being selected as the student

representative for the 12 month casual vacancy, joining Year 7

student Jayavi Senarath who attended his first Council meeting

in March. Isaac is a member of our highly energetic VCAL

class of 2021 and we look forward to his involvement in School

Council this year.

Some changes to our staff team will take place next term, as

follows. Mr Bennett will be taking leave during Term 2 to

attend to a health issue and is looking forward to being back

with us in Term 3. We wish him all the very best with his

recuperation. Strong progress has already been made through

Aladdin rehearsals, which will resume when Mr Bennett

returns in Term 3. A performance date of September is

anticipated.

We have enjoyed having Mrs Harrison on staff during Term 1

but sadly we are saying goodbye to her this week due to family

commitments. We thank her for her contribution to the

Humanities and VCAL teams and wish her and her young

family all the very best. We hope to see Mrs Harrison back

with us at a future point. I am pleased to advise that Mrs Alice

Adams has been appointed as Mrs Harrison’s replacement.

Meanwhile, continuing the Camperdown College baby boom

is Ms Magnusson who finishes shortly to commence her

family leave. Ms Magnusson’s work as a teacher and year

level coordinator has been very greatly appreciated and she

will be missed by us all. We extend our best wishes for the

arrival of Ms Magnusson’s first baby!

In closing I extend my sincere appreciation to all members of

the school community for your efforts and contributions this

term. I am sure we have all appreciated a less interrupted term

than the one that we were putting behind us this time last year.

It is a privilege and a pleasure to have the opportunity to tackle

new challenges and opportunities together and I look forward

to the partnership continuing next term.

Ms Cherie Kilpatrick, Principal

100 Year Celebration of Camperdown Higher Elementary School: Known as the Senior Campus of Camperdown College, the Camperdown Higher Elementary School was opened on Friday 14th October, 1921 on a site described as a rock strewn reserve at the foot of a mount. Bounded by Wilson Street, Curdie Street, Errey Street and Cobden Road, the then wooden building housed 110 pupils across 4 forms and is now the beautiful multi storey red brick we’ve become familiar with. 100 years later and the school remains an integral part of the Camperdown community and provider of quality state education.

A busy and rewarding term has come to a close. It has been wonderful to see how seamlessly the Year 7 and new

students to the College have settled in to life at the Senior Campus. The Year 7 students quickly adapted to following

their timetable and navigating the rooms and always with a smile on their faces. Congratulations to all students on

their efforts and behaviour this term. It is a pleasure to witness your pride and positive interactions with each other

and staff. Enjoy your break.

Parent Teacher Interviews:

It was lovely to meet and greet parents as they attended Parent Teacher Interviews last week. The extended time

slot and reinforcement of the importance of booking times seemed to improve the flow of the event. Teachers made

a concerted effort to stick to the time slots but in some cases did go over time – thank you for your patience. Thank

you also for your attendance as we really appreciate the opportunity to discuss student achievement and progress.

HSSSD Athletics Carnival:

Fine, sunny conditions prevailed for the running of the HSSSD Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. We had seventy students present at the

event including athletes and helpers. Students performed very well and in most cases improved their times and lengths from our house

carnival. We placed third overall and at the time of writing this are unaware of the age group champion results. VCAL students assisted

Parents & Friends volunteers on the barbeque and Year 9 Advance students assisted in the running of the events. Both groups proved

to be wonderful ambassadors for the college with high praise passed on for their efforts and interactions.

Celebration of Learning Assembly:

The Term 1 Celebration of Learning Assembly was conducted on Monday afternoon and live streamed to parents, due to the wonderful

efforts of Gabrielle Bellman, Dylan Rowe and Lauren White. Feedback from parents watching the event indicated that the audio and

visual was very clear. School Captains, Bailey and Jess, conducted the ceremony and were very confident in this role. Year 9 students

showcased events they had participated in this term: Isaac Winsall and Tom Baker - Clean Up Australia Day; Ruby Kempton and Tom

Hutton - Gaming to Gambling workshops and Ebony Pearce and Perrie Winsall - Alumni visit (Noah Boyle). Congratulations to all

students who received awards at the assembly, see pages 5 and 6 for a full list.

Lunchtime Activities:

Coordinated lunchtime activities have been planned for Term 2. Sports Captain Holly Swayn, and our House Captains, have organised

weekly house competitions in a variety of sports. Dylan Rowe will be conducting a coding club for all students interested in computer

programming and Gabrielle Bellman will be running weekly library challenges. Year 7 students are invited to express interest to join

the Science LEAP Club (Learning Everything about Phenomenon) which will run each Thursday.

End of Term Reports:

Classroom teachers have recorded strengths and next steps for each student forming their end of term report for Term 1. These end of

term reports are a snapshot of the strengths each student displays, with clear steps for future learning. We encourage all parents to view

these reports on Compass and share comments and feedback with students. These reports can be accessed via the ‘Teaching and

Learning’ tab, under ‘Semester Reports’ on Compass. All teachers, have also provided comments regarding each students’ attainment

of success criteria for each learning cycle this term. These are accessed under ‘Learning Tasks’ also via the ‘Teaching & Learning’ tab.

NAPLAN – Coordinated Practice Test:

Year 7 and 9 students participated in the Australia-wide NAPLAN Coordinated Practice Test last week. The test covered reading,

numeracy and language conventions. This test is conducted to test the network capacity in schools and to enable students to become

familiar with this online platform. The NAPLAN test will be delivered online in May.

Save the Date:

Planning is underway for the Debutante Ball for students in Year 11 and 12 to be held on Friday 11th June.

Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal

End of Term 1:

As we come to the end of Term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students on a wonderful

term and start to the 2021 school year. Regular routines and special school events have been enjoyed fully, and

were definitely not taken for granted. Students have embraced learning this term, with many significant gains made

and individual learning goals reached and surpassed. Our intervention program has supported a number of students

in reading, targeting next steps to ensure no student is left behind in their learning after a disrupted year last year.

End of Term Reports:

Classroom teachers have recorded strengths and next steps for each student forming their end of term report for

Term 1. These end of term reports are a snapshot of the strengths each student displays in Literacy and Numeracy,

with clear steps for future learning. We encourage all parents to view these reports on Compass and share comments and feedback with

students. These reports can be accessed via the ‘Teaching and Learning’ tab, under ‘Semester Reports’ on Compass. All teachers,

including specialist teachers, have also provided comments regarding each students’ attainment of success criteria for each learning

cycle this term. These are accessed under ‘Learning Tasks’ also via the ‘Teaching & Learning’ tab.

Junior School Council:

We thank the Junior School Council, along with Miss Helmore and Mr Oborne, for organising a successful end of term celebration day

today to raise funds for the Good Friday Appeal. Students were encouraged to dress as what they want to be when they grow up. Many

superheroes, police officers, sport stars and farmers were prominent throughout all year levels, and it was lovely seeing students

embracing the theme of the day. Thanks to students and families who donated a gold coin today for the appeal. It is much appreciated.

Easter Egg Hunt:

Students started Easter celebrations early with a whole school Easter egg hunt throughout the Junior Campus grounds today. Over the

past week, Ms Smithwick has led an art project which involved students decorating an egg for another student with a kind message

attached. These eggs were then laminated and placed throughout the playground and school yard. After lunch today, students hunted

for the egg with their name and message. A chocolate egg was then devoured for their efforts – an important part of any Easter egg

hunt! Thanks to Ms Smithwick for organising this special event for us all.

Celebration of Learning Assembly and Student of the Term Awards:

Today we acknowledged student learning and effort at our Celebration of Learning Assembly. Year levels showcased various learning

that had occurred in the classroom this term, whilst teachers enjoyed awarding their student of the term award to a student who has

flourished this term in their learning. Congratulations to all award winners. Your efforts and commitment to your learning are things

you should be very proud of. Individual student of the term recipients are listed on page 5 of the newsletter.

Gold Attendance:

We continue to communicate that being at school on time every day is extremely important. Today we acknowledged students who

have achieved gold attendance by being at school every day, and before the start of day bell. Congratulations to all students who reached

this achievement this term, with names listed on page 5 of the newsletter.

CDSSA District Athletics:

Yesterday, we had 32 students representing Camperdown College at the CDSSA District Athletics. Students enjoyed the opportunity to

showcase their skills against similar aged athletes from our local area. We were extremely proud of the way these athletes represented

our college and congratulate them all on their efforts and persistence. Whilst we didn’t take home the top prize, we were excited to

finish fourth on the day. Thanks to Mr Attrill, Mr Oborne and Simon who helped our students on the day.

I wish all families an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and Easter period. I look forward to seeing students back at school on Monday 19th

April, for the start of Term 2.

Greetings to all in the Camperdown College community,

My name is Phil Walz, and it’s a pleasure to introduce myself as the newly appointed School Chaplain across the

two Camperdown College campuses. I am at the Junior Campus on Mondays, and the Senior Campus on Tuesdays.

For those who aren’t familiar with the role of a Chaplain within a state school, arguably the easiest way to think

about it is simply ‘student wellbeing’, with a focus on pastoral care and standing alongside and supporting students

as they navigate their way through the many emotions they experience throughout the school day. This support

might take the form of group work, one-to-one meetings, or general but regular conversations.

The emotions (and behaviours) that students express within the school environment are often expressions of what

might be happening in their lives outside of the school day, and so as such, I’m also available to meet with parents

who would like to explore any additional supports and/or strategies that they might wish to try in supporting their child.

For families who have already completed a consent form to see the Chaplain, please note that this carries over unless you specifically

withdraw consent. For those families who would like to refer their child to see the Chaplain, or who would simply like to have the

option of seeing the Chaplain, please make contact with the Junior or Senior Campus Office to complete a consent form.

I look forward to getting to know as many students and families as I can. Please do say g’day if you see me in the yard.

With thanks,

Phil Walz, School Chaplain

dismissed at 2.30pm Good Friday Public Holiday: Friday 2nd April

Many eager Year 3 – 6 students turned out on Tuesday for the Peacock Challenge Spelling Bee. It was quickly evident that students had taken up the opportunity and advice to practise at home, and that they were concentrating hard to ensure that their oral spelling technique did justice to their spelling knowledge and skills. Lunchtime came and went and we still had 22 contestants standing! A terrific effort from all participants and with five peacock feathers up for grabs, I was excited to conclude our ‘knock out’ spelling bee today.

Weekly

Competition

A new question is posted each week in the Sceince department for all

Senior Campus students to tackle. The questions and answers are as

follows:

Why do zebras have stripes?

The tsetse fly avoid stripes so don't attack zebras, therefore do not spread

disease. Correct answer Olivia Winsall (Year 8) and Jayavi Senarath (Year

7).

Why are bees disappearing?

Because of pesticides, habitat loss and parasites on the bees. Correct

answer Aregawi Chivell (Year 7) and Sybella Gavin (Year 7).

How do ferns survive with so little light?

Ferns have adapted to using red light that is the only light that filters

through the tree canopy. Regular blue light does not get through which is

what all other plants need. Correct answer Genevieve Gleeson (Year 7).

Why did the dinosaurs go extinct?

Dramatic biodiversity loss by asteroid impact 66 million years ago. BUT…

before the asteroid hit, dinosaurs were running out of food and were less

resilient to survive such an event. Correct answer Taylor Bernaldo (Year

9) Charlton Lewin (Year 8) and Thomas Bath (Year 8).

On Saturday 20th March, I travelled to Toad Hall in Warrnambool to perform to

Monica Curro. Monica Curro plays in the second row of violins in the Melbourne

Symphony Orchestra. She is very famous in the music industry. I played in front of

her and 25 other musicians. I played Allegro, one of my Grade One exam pieces. I

received some very helpful feedback from Monica and was even lucky enough to

perform a duet with her. It was a great day, thanks to Mrs Pugh for organising it.

Lila Horspole, Year 6 Student

Last Friday in Session 3/4, the Junior School

Band along with a few Senior School Band

students were lucky to have Monica Curro,

who leads the 2nd violins in the Melbourne

Symphony Orchestra, join us for a very

enjoyable workshop. We played several

pieces together and performed as a band for

Monica. We were all so excited and we

wanted to show off our skills!

Monica gave us lots of tips and advice. When

we asked a question like what a certain thing

was on her violin, she explained it was a mute

to change the sound and tone. She also showed

us a ‘hotel mute’ that makes the sound of the

violin just loud enough to hear when you are

practising.

Thank you Mrs Pugh, for organising the

fantastic workshop.
