From the Principal’s Desk…
We have welcomed more new students and families into
the Junior Campus over the past two weeks. The
renovations and building works that were carried out at
Brooke Street in 2011-2012 mean that we are able to
comfortably accommodate our growing numbers in
attractive, modernised learning spaces. The new BER
building is proving to be an excellent base for our upper
primary students whilst also housing the campus library,
Standing Tall mentoring program and School Chaplain,
Cameron McAdam.
A number of other capital works projects are presently
being scoped and costed. School Council will work
through the areas earmarked for future development to
determine short and long term priorities for the school.
The possible relocation of the Office/Reception area at
the Senior Campus to the Errey Street side of the building
is under discussion at present and I would welcome input
from the school community.
To improve traffic management and safety at our Senior
Campus, as of next Monday 6th
May, we will be closing
the Wilson Street driveway gates to traffic. The driveway
that runs through the school is no longer used for buses
and there is no safe provision for visitors to park on the
school site. To ensure the safety of students as they move
around the yard, we ask that parents and visitors park
along Errey Street and enter the building on this side.
This is a safer but not particularly attractive entry point
and this is one consideration in our discussions regarding
the future location of the Office/Reception area.
Thankyou and congratulations to our VCAL students
who have redeveloped an unattractive and unused area at
the back of the Wilson Street Campus, creating a new
seating area for students. Several of our senior students
have also assisted handyman Darren Teal in recent
weeks, carefully measuring up and installing our notice
boards. Thankyou to Trey Darcy, Jayden Cronin and
Mark Hem for your valuable assistance.
I would like to extend my personal congratulations to
those talented members of the College community
involved in the Camperdown Theatre Company’s
excellent performance of Hairspray: staff members
Graeme Bennett, Cameron McAdam and Pauline Van
Dijk, students Lucy Gstrein, Bonnie Ailey and past
students Monique Vagg and James Anderson and parents
Maz O’Neil, Michelle McCallum, Ross Irving, Rebecca
Reed and Sue and Ian Currell. If you have not yet had the
pleasure of attending a performance, I strongly
recommend that you obtain a ticket for one of this
weekend’s final three shows. Graeme Bennett has surely
outclassed John Travolta in the role of Mrs Turnblad and
his performance has to be seen to be believed!
Also making a great contribution to the performing arts
are our dedicated band of State School Spectacular
dancers who are working hard under the direction of
Annette Timilsina and Year 11 student Jessica Gaut in
the build up to the big event. Parents and others wishing
to purchase tickets through the early bird special offer
(see page 8) are invited to send payment and details into
the Brooke Street Office by Thursday 9th
May in order
for group bookings for the matinee and evening
performances to be made. This would enable members of
the Camperdown College school community to sit
together. We are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of
our students’ labour in Melbourne on Saturday 27th
July.

Wilson Street News
School Nurse:
Last week, we welcomed our new School Nurse, Claire Blackstock. Claire has been busy completing a number of training activities
and familiarising herself with the students. We look forward to working with Claire to improve the health outcomes for our students.
NAPLAN:
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for students in Year 7 and 9 will be conducted on
Tuesday 14th
, Wednesday 15th
and Thursday 16th
May. It is important that students are in attendance for these tests as they form an
important part of our assessment schedule and determine future programs and intervention.
Student Survey:
Students in Year 7 – 12 have completed the annual Attitudes to School Survey this week. The results from this survey will provide us
with valuable data on students’ views of their wellbeing, teaching and learning and school in general, to support school improvement.
Past student nominated for a Bravery Award:
It is with great pride that many staff and students have commented about seeing past student, David Robertson Junior, on the national
news and reading about him in the newspapers. David rescued an elderly man from a house fire on Sunday evening in Geelong. David
will be nominated for a bravery award for his actions.
Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN):
Year 9 student, Aleisha Scoleri attended a RYPEN camp in Millicent on the weekend sponsored by the Camperdown Rotary Club.
Whilst on camp, she listened to a presentation from a person who had lost his leg. He spoke about persistence and overcoming
difficulties. This guest speaker set the scene for the participants to challenge their thinking and motivation for learning and leadership.
Aleisha participated in high ropes activities and abseiling. Through doing this, the participants learnt how to push away negative
thoughts and persist. Aleisha said that the experience developed her confidence and allowed her to meet many new people. Aleisha
spoke about her experiences at the Rotary Club meeting on Monday night.
ANZAC Day:
Our College was very well represented at the ANZAC Day service last week. Thankyou to all of the students and families for their
support of this annual event.
Year 10 Camp:
At the time of the newsletter going to print, the Year 10 students are enjoying the Melbourne Experience camp. Along with Mrs
Maskell and Mr Gleeson, the students have visited a number of universities, listened to past student Thalia Marshall talk about her
role and various other roles at the Coles State Office, attended the Victorian Institute of Sport and familiarised themselves with the
intricacies of the public transport system in the city and suburbs. Tomorrow, the students will attend the Age Careers Expo.
Ms Vicki Angus
Wilson Street Assistant Principal

Special Welcomes:
This week, we have welcomed another three new students into our Camperdown College community! We welcome Jesse Clark and
Dexter Barron into the Brooke Street Campus and also Hailey Rosenthal who has returned to us from Terang. We are delighted to
have them all here at Camperdown College and wish them a long and successful educational journey.
Victorian State Schools Spectacular:
Last week, our students attended their second VSSS rehearsal in Warrnambool. They are all doing a magnificent job of mastering the
complex dance moves that are involved in their performance, but even more importantly, they are to be commended on their conduct
and behaviour during these rehearsals. It’s always wonderful to hear positive feedback on the behaviour of our students both inside
and outside of the school. Well done to you all!
Division Athletics:
Last week, eight of our students competed in the Division Athletics Championships in Warrnambool, with great success! We were
very proud of both the achievements and the team spirit of Ruby Bennett, Bailey McDonald, Molly Hedrick, Harry Sumner, Angus
Gordon, Ben Walters, Thomas Nicholson and Olivia Henzen and would also like to thank the parents and families of these students
for being there to support them!
Bus Travellers and Student Drop Off and Pick Up:
Just another reminder to all parents to be aware of the safe drop off and pick up points for your children before and after school. The
McKinnon Street double gates are for bus travellers only. Students should NOT be dropped off or picked up in this area. If you prefer
to use McKinnon Street, please utilise the small gate at the west end of the school grounds. Also, the parking bays in Brooke Street
are marked five minutes only. Please be aware of where you park and the restrictions around them. These are put in place to assist
with traffic flow at the beginning and end of the school day, which is important to ensure the maximum safety of our students.
Bus families, please remember to call the Brooke Street Office if your child’s bus travel arrangements are different on any given day,
ensuring that you give plenty of notice for this information to be transferred to both students, staff and bus drivers. We understand that
sometimes arrangements can change late in the day, but please minimise this as much as possible.
Assembly:
Just a reminder that during Term 2, the Brooke Street Assembly will be held at 2.45pm each Friday. They will continue to be held on
the basketball court, as long as the weather allows, alternatively, we will conduct them indoors. This is an opportunity for parents and
school community members to participate in our celebrations. Thankyou to the parents who have attended so far!

Line Marking:
Last week, we had the first phase of our new line marking completed at the Brooke Street Campus. The first phase was primarily lines
for Bike Education lessons and the second phase will include bat tennis courts, four square courts and other various games that the
students can engage in at recess and lunch times. We all look forward to this being completed in the coming days and ready to use!
Attitude to School Survey:
This week, our Year 5/6 students completed the Attitude to School Survey. This survey assists schools to gain an understanding of
students’ perceptions and their experience of school. The survey provides schools with valuable data on students’ views of their
wellbeing, school in general and teaching and learning. All of our students participated in the survey with a great level of
responsibility and purpose and we thank them for that.
NAPLAN:
Now that we are in May, the NAPLAN tests are just around the corner. The dates for NAPLAN (National Assessment Program –
Literacy and Numeracy) this year are Tuesday 14th
, Wednesday 15th
and Thursday 16th
May and will involve all of our Year 3 and 5
students.
NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or
not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in Literacy and Numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools
with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and
territories with information about how educational programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments
made by teachers about each student’s performance.
If you have any questions about the NAPLAN tests, please visit http://www.nap.edu.au or speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Camperdown College students walked proudly down the Avenue to the War Memorial for the annual Camperdown ANZAC Day
service last Thursday 25th
April. The students listened respectfully to the message of Mr Nixon and the representatives of the RSL, the
Lakes and Craters band and the bugle player Mr McIllveen.
School Captains Jarrod Esh, Madison Helmore, Alinea
Ellerton and Jaedyn Bassett and SRC President Shannon
Jolly (all pictured right) represented the College by carrying
the RSL flag to lead the procession, reading sections from
the Special Exhortation and the Ode of Remembrance and
also placing wreaths at the base of the memorial
The students’ behaviour and appearance were exemplary.
Thankyou to parents, students and staff for attending this

Year 3 – 6 Division Athletics Champions The Division Athletics Carnival involved over 400 students from the South West Zone division which saw students from as far away as
Portland and Hamilton competing at the event which was held at the Brauerander Track in Warrnambool. All students tried their very
best at the event/s they were selected for.
This year, our 11 year old boys relay team consisted of Harry Sumner, Angus Gordon, Ben Walters and Thomas Nicholson who
finished an extremely close second on the day. The boys ran an amazing race and only narrowly missed out on first position; however,
they bettered their finish of third last year and qualified for a spot at regional level, so well done boys!
Some of the individual achievements made on the day included:
Olivia Henzen: 1st Hurdles, 2
nd 100m, 1
st 200m
Harry Sumner: 1st Triple Jump, 1
st 200m, 1
st 100m
Molly Hedrick: 2nd
Long Jump, 5th
Hurdles
Ruby Bennett: 3rd
Shot Put
Bailey McDonald: 7th
800m, 11th

We wish these students all the best as they continue their training and prepare themselves for this level of competition in early Term 4. I
would like to say a very big thankyou to all of the parents/guardians who volunteered to drive their children to Warrnambool for the
competition. It is greatly appreciated.

SScchhooooll ffoorr SSttuuddeenntt LLeeaaddeerrsshhiipp We have now been at the School for Student Leadership in Marlo for nearly three weeks.
The other schools that are staying here with us are Lakes Entrance Secondary College, Saint Helena Secondary College, Fitzroy High
School, Gladstone Park Secondary College, Mortlake Secondary College, Reservoir High School, Lara Secondary College and
Melbourne Girls School.
So far, we have taken part in bridge building, Beliefs and Values, Bikes Intro, half day bike ride, Individual Learning Plan, Peer Skills,
Community Learning Plan, surfing, photography, Safe Food Handling and Leadership Conference. We have all got our Safe Food
Handling Certificate and we are working towards getting our CPR Qualification.
Upon arriving, we all had mixed feelings as everybody was unfamiliar. We were put together as a team pretty quick. Living in a
community of 44 other students is like being on a massive school camp with people you don’t know. Our day to day life is pretty much
like normal school days. We have class at 9am, morning tea at 10.30am, class from 11am until lunch at 12.30pm, class from 1.30pm,
afternoon tea at 4pm, DEARR at 5pm, dinner at 6pm and evening class at 7.30pm.
The highlights so far have been going surfing, bridge building and making new friends and we have our expedition, introduction to
canoes and GPS navigation coming up.

th May at the
Camperdown Showgrounds, students will be involved in an Adidas School Fun Run as a major fundraising
event for our school again this year.
The Adidas School Fun Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures that we send the right
message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
We will be running the event as a walk-a-thon in conjunction with our Cross Country Carnival. On Wednesday 8th
May, students will
compete in their age group cross country event and in addition to this; they will participate in a walk-a-thon whilst other age groups are
completing their cross country event. Parents and friends are also invited to join us in the walk-a-thon part of the day.
All students in Prep – Year 6 have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of Camperdown College. The
funds raised from 2012 and 2013 will be used to revamp the mini golf course and purchase additional yard activities to keep our
students active and healthy. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort.
We hope that you support us in this fundraising venture and look forward to seeing you at the Cross Country Carnival next week.

Volcanic Voices On Thursday 18
th April, the Camperdown College Year 11 Geography students set off for their fieldwork investigation on our rich
volcanic environment. All students performed exceptionally well and voiced their intrigue and interest in seeing their class work
visualise in the field. Here is what some of the students had to say:
It was great to find out more about the natural and human geographic characteristics of Camperdown and the local area – Zack
Gravett.
It was fun to see all of the historic areas around Camperdown. I certainly learnt a great amount of information about the local
region – Connor Jackson.
I really liked the lava tube cave and also learning about Mount Leura. It was a fun and interesting day – Alexandra Eastwood.
The fieldwork to Wurrong was excellent and it was great to hear some history of the area. A wonderful example of Spatial Change
Over Time – Jessica Hedrick.
The fieldtrip was very informative and interesting. I loved the tuff layers and lave tubes – Lucy Gstrein.
I loved the lava tube cave and how the day was relaxed whilst we learnt heaps – Victoria McCann.

Keys Please is a short, 70 – 75 minute session aimed at helping you, the learner driver, enjoy the learning to drive experience, pass
your licence tests and become a safe and competent driver. At the same time, it will help your supervising drivers (parents, older
brothers/sisters, uncles, aunts, whoever) tackle their role with confidence whilst avoiding the stress that can sometimes be a part of it.
It’s been run here at Camperdown College for a few years now, with great success. Everybody who attends comes away saying that
they’ve learned something and had a laugh!
Learning to drive should be a fun, exciting time – not a scary or dull chore. We’ll show you how to make the most of it.

VViiccttoorriiaann SSttaattee SScchhoooollss SSppeeccttaaccuullaarr Jessica Gaut and myself watched with pride as our dance team took part in last week's Victorian State School Spectacular rehearsals in
Warrnambool. The students' behaviour and willingness to get the dances right was fantastic. They were always ready and waiting for
the next set of instructions and have put in 100% effort to get the steps and other movements just right.
A big thankyou to the parents who drove this time. Your involvement is making this possible for our students and is greatly
appreciated.
With only a couple of weeks before the next regional rehearsal on Tuesday 14th
May, it is a great time for families to ask their dancers
what they have been learning and ask them to show you some of the tricky moves that they have learnt. It is really important for
students to keep practicing their moves and if you have the music, they can start to practice without visual cues.
It is always helpful on district rehearsal days if students can be at school as close to 8.30am as possible and that bus travellers move
quickly from their bus to the leaving point, so that we can leave as close to 8.40am as possible. Prior to leaving, we have to follow the
processes of roll marking and sorting travel arrangements which all takes time, so the quicker we get organised, the sooner we can get
going.
Before we know it, the dance team and support staff will be jetting off to Melbourne for the two production days and then the day of
the two performances in July. There will be early morning starts, but it will be worth it to have the students home each evening so that
they can have a good night’s sleep ready for the next day. The mini bus is booked and we are just working out the final details. I will
keep you informed as soon as information becomes available.
The good news is, we have been notified of the opening of presale tickets which are much cheaper than full price tickets. You will
notice that sales open on Monday 13th
May, so get in quick as seats at these prices are limited. You will need to purchase online via
Ticketek and use the password Spectacular order complete the order form on page 8 and send in to the Brooke Street Office before
Thursday 9th
May. Dancers are already excitedly talking about their families going and it would be great to have lots of the
Camperdown College community there to support our dancers and enjoy three hours of fantastic entertainment.
Reminder notes will go home prior to the next rehearsal. If you are down as a driver, but cannot make it please contact the Brooke
Street Office as soon as possible so that we can make other arrangements well in advance.
So that you can have a copy of the VSSS official practice DVD (highly recommended so that you can keep practicing between
school sessions), please bring a 8Gb USB memory stick to school as soon as possible so that we can give you a copy to take
home.

May at 7:30pm. Teams and individuals need to be entered by the meeting. We
encourage individuals to put forward their name in the hope that there are enough to make an extra team as we do not want anyone who is
