CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 2, 7th February 2019
Camperdown
A change is as good as a holiday and our new Prep and Year 7 students have certainly demonstrated this in
beginning their primary or secondary school journey! Our Junior Campus students and staff were delighted to
welcome our 20 new Preps and their families last Friday, whilst our 45 Year 7 students have brought an injection of youth and energy to the Senior Campus.
Thirty-four Year 11 students commenced their VCE or VCAL certificate this year and we have been very
pleased to welcome 13 new students into the school community in addition to our incoming Preps and Year 7’s. Our Year 12 students can enjoy their unique status as our ‘oldest and wisest’ students whilst also belonging to the last of the small groups going through the school.
Best wishes to all students, new and returning, for a happy and successful year at Camperdown College.

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Welcome back to all students, staff
and families! The new school year has
commenced smoothly and a busy
learning program is already well
underway at both campuses.
Our Junior School Captains Stella
Horspole and Finn Tolland, and Senior
School Captains Olivia Henzen and
Annabel Lucas, have capably led their
first campus assemblies. Our wider
student leadership team is busy planning for upcoming
swimming carnivals, lunchtime activities and school events.
Four new staff members have joined the Camperdown
College staff team, bringing valuable skills and experiences:
Marie Mutton (Maths/Science), Erin Bell (Year 1/2B),
Maddison Tegelhuter (Year 3/4T) and Gabrielle Bellman
(Library). At the Junior Campus, Graeme Bennett is acting in
the Assistant Principal role this term while retaining his
Performing Arts role.
Laying the foundations for a successful year, our Year 7/8 and
12 students have already participated in year level camps, at
Lorne and Deakin University Warrnambool respectively. Our
Preps are quickly adapting to the routines of school,
embracing the classroom learning and making new friends.
Sounds Write is well underway in all of our P – Year 4
classrooms and our Year 3 – 6 students are capably
incorporating the swimming program into their busy schedule.
Auditions for our Senior Campus school production, Grease,
have commenced and there are many indications that 2019 is
going to be another terrific year at Camperdown College!
Thank you to students and families for the effort that is being
made to ensure learning can commence at the first bell each
day. Coming to school on time, every day, ready for learning
is a responsibility that our students take seriously and we are
very proud of our strong attendance rates that underpin our
students’ academic achievements. In reviewing our 2018
attendance data it was very pleasing to see that the average
days absent at each campus had further decreased from 2017,
and this is a pattern that should continue this year through a
strong home – school partnership. We welcome the
opportunity to work with families to remove barriers that
impact on school attendance, and the school community's
high regard for our strict attendance policy is greatly
appreciated.
Last night's Year 12 parent information session run by
Elevate Education reinforced messages that our students had
heard earlier in the week at their study camp. One message
in particular resonated with me for its relevance to all
students regardless of their stage of schooling. A year's
worth of challenges (assessment tasks, homework, exams)
can seem daunting and it may be difficult to find the
motivation or the courage to face it in its entirety. Finding
the motivation or courage to face today's challenge (this
assessment task, this homework task, this exam) is a far
more manageable prospect. And one by one, the challenges
are tackled and success builds upon itself.
I wish all students a very satisfying and successful year at
Camperdown College, one small challenge at a time!
Ms Cherie Kilpatrick
Principal

The corridors were a hive of activity and chatter as students returned to school for 2019 last Wednesday
excited about the year ahead. The students were all caught by surprise with the locker area transformation
where students are now grouped according to their house. This will assist in allowing students to get to know
other students in their house and provide an opportunity for older students to mentor the younger ones.
We welcomed forty-five Year 7 students who have all seemed to grow in confidence with each day and also
welcomed other students in Year 9, 10 and 11. We trust that all students will find their time at Camperdown
College rewarding in many ways. Camperdown College is a very inclusive community that encourages all
students to treat each other with respect, achieve personal excellence and take ownership for behaviour. We are
proud of the programs we offer, the results we achieve and relish the opportunity to watch our students
develop into community minded and responsible citizens.
New Staff:
We have welcomed two new staff members to the Senior Campus. Mrs Mutton has transferred from Bellarine Secondary College and
is teaching Physics, Mathematics and Science. Mrs Mutton is a very experienced teacher and we look forward to benefiting from the
enthusiasm and knowledge she brings to this position. Gabrielle Bellman has also joined our Education Support Staff team working
four days a week in the Senior Campus Library. Gabrielle is a passionate and experienced librarian who will no doubt inspire students
to read and enjoy the library space.
Year Level Coordinators:
Our Year Level Coordinators met with students in their care last week and outlined expectations with regards to uniform, use of
technology and attitude to school work which is consistent with the information that appears in each students’ organiser. Our
coordinators this year are: Ms Black/Mr Van Year 7; Ms Black Year 8; Miss Jubb Year 9; Ms Irwin Year 10 and Mrs Taylor Year
11/12 with Mrs Mutton as Year 11 assistant. These teachers are responsible for overseeing student welfare and will welcome parent
contact to discuss any issues that might arise.
Buses:
Ms Crowle is once again in charge of buses and will deal with any concerns in relation to bus travel. Just a reminder that students who
do not normally travel on buses are required to bring a note to school seeking permission to travel on a bus if the need occurs.
Collecting students from school throughout the day:
If you need to pick your child up from school during the school day, please ensure that a note has been written in their organiser. Your
child will need to show this note to their coordinator who will sign it and then direct them to the Senior Campus Office for an exit
pass. It will be your child’s responsibility to move to the administration area for collection at the time stated on their pass as the public
address system cannot be used during class time.
Lunch Arrangements:
Students can order their lunch each day except Thursday from Camperdown Country Roasts & Salads. Order forms are located near
the Senior Campus Office and are to be placed in the locked box each morning. Due to the high number of students wanting to access
the Food Technology Centre to toast sandwiches and heat up food and the clash with Food Technology classes, a roster for use has
been put in place:
Food Technology Centre Lunchtime Use:
Monday Year 7 and 11 students only. Opens at 12.50pm
Tuesday Year 8, 9, 10 students only. Opens at 1pm
Wednesday Year 8, 9, 10 students only. Opens at 1pm
Thursday College Café – students do not have access to heat or toast
Friday Year 7 and 11 students only. Opens at 12.50pm
On Thursday, College Café students offer lunch to the students. For approximately $5 students can usually purchase a savoury and
sweet item and also a drink. This week the Café opened for the first time this year.
Year 12 Camp:
Our Year 12 students attended a shared camp at Deakin University earlier this week with Terang College students. The students
participated in a range of workshops on preparing for Year 12, growth mindset, study skills and time management. Past students
Stephanie Wiffen and Tilly Morgan joined a panel to speak to the students about their post-school pathways. VCAL students visited
industries whilst the VCE students received advice about their English studies. Thank you to Mrs Taylor for organising this
experience.
Year 7/8 Camp:
Sixty-five students and seven staff members eagerly departed for Lorne for the Year 7/8 three day camp yesterday morning. An
exciting itinerary has been planned for the students and we eagerly await news of the new found skills that they have developed
especially in relation to surfing.
Leadership Positions:
School Captains, Annabel Lucas and Olivia Henzen addressed students at our return to school assembly and introduced all leaders.
Positions of responsibility are:
Performing Arts Captain – Charlie Tickner
Sport Captain – Guy Faber
Social Justice Captain – Zoe Wilkinson
Senior Campus News
Excellence ~ Respect ~ Responsibility ~ Caring ~ Honesty
House Captains – Olivia Maskell and Jack Helmore (Manifold); Sarah Delwig and Thomas Nicholson (Bullen Merri); Grace
Jopling and Harry Sumner (Leura).
We look forward to working with these students as they implement programs, provide feedback and represent the College.
Grease:
Rights to perform Grease have been paid, the rehearsal schedule set and it is all about to happen! Auditions for Grease are currently
underway. There is still opportunity for students to join in should they wish.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Welcome!
On behalf of the staff at the Junior Campus I would like to sincerely welcome everyone for the 2019 school
year. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm with which all our students have begun with as they embark
on another year of new learning. A very special welcome to all the new students and their families who have
joined us at Camperdown College for the first time, especially all our Prep students! The arrival of new Preps
always creates a positive feel in a school as we all share their excitement of beginning their educational
journey.
New Staff:
Also beginning their educational journeys at Camperdown College this year are several new members of staff.
Miss Maddie Tegelhuter has joined us in Year 3/4 and Miss Erin Bell in Year 1/2. We also have Miss Gabrielle Bellman who has
joined our Education Support staff, working in the Junior Campus Library each Wednesday. Welcome to each of you – we hope you
enjoy being part of our staff team and the wider school community.
Year 3-6 Swimming Program:
Swimming for students in Year 3 – 6 has commenced this week and will continue next week, culminating with our Year 3 – 6
Swimming Carnival next Friday 15th February. All parents are most welcome to attend this event at the Camperdown Swimming Pool,
commencing at 11.00am.
Bus Notes:
A reminder that if your child is a regular bus traveller, they are expected on the bus each night unless we have been notified. If you
have days that your child will not need the bus (sporting commitments or you simply would like to collect them from school), please
write a note in your child’s organiser or phone Amy in the Junior Campus Office. It’s important to keep this information updated and
to make contact if arrangements change.
Uniform:
It has been great to see all students in the correct school uniform for the start of the year. Please ensure your child is in correct uniform
each day in order to continue the high standard we set for ourselves. As per our school’s Sun Smart policy it is an expectation that all
students wear a hat when outside. Students without a hat must remain under the tree, in the shade, for the duration of recess and
lunchtime. Hats can be purchased from either the Uniform Shop at the Senior Campus or the Junior Campus Office.
Compass:
Parents are reminded to regularly check Compass for updates regarding student learning and behaviour. At this time of the school year
teachers have been busy uploading new Learning Cycles that describe the desired learning outcomes for students. Compass forms a
key element in the home-school partnership we enjoy in our school community. If you have any questions regarding Compass please
do not hesitate to contact the school.
Assembly:
A tradition at the Junior Campus is our weekly school assembly, which is held in the BER at 2.45pm each Friday. Each week a
Citizenship Award is presented by each classroom teacher to a student in their class, and the assembly is run by our Junior School
Captains. Parents are encouraged to attend assembly and to share in our school celebrations. We look forward to having you join us!
