CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 4, 14th May 2021

Camperdown

Our Parents & Friends Association continues to think big, work hard and take wonderful care of our school community. Last Friday’s Mother’s Day Breakfast saw a record number of students and families enjoy this occasion together and we are so grateful to our volunteers for bringing us together at this special time. Sincere thanks also to our Junior Campus families for your support of the Mother’s Day Stall. There were many happy customers and I am sure our mums were tickled pink with the thought that their children put into their selections!

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,

aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.

Calendar

From the Principal’s Desk…

We are very proud of our students’ efforts

this week as they tackled NAPLAN testing.

It was terrific to see our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9

students make good use of the time

available and work their way carefully

through the questions, which tested their

skills and understanding in reading, writing,

spelling, grammar and punctuation, and

numeracy. Thank you to all staff and

parents who have assisted in maintaining a

calm, positive and sensible approach to NAPLAN, which is just

one element in an ongoing cycle of learning and assessment.

As a Sounds-Write trainer school, an honour we share with just

one other school in Australia, our Junior Campus classrooms

are looking forward to again hosting teams of teachers and

school leaders from other Victorian schools on scheduled days

during June. Camperdown College was an early adopter of this

highly structured, explicit approach to teaching all children to

read and spell, and we are now providing guidance to other

schools in earlier stages of their implementation journey.

Sounds-Write is a consistent and widely enjoyed element of our

daily literacy teaching and there is widespread interest in the

practices used across our junior, middle and senior primary

classrooms. Mrs Tolland’s leadership in this area has been

instrumental in progressing this work and our students and staff

should be very proud of their achievements.

With Deb training commencing last week, our Senior Campus

participants have much to look forward to as they work towards

the June 11th presentation date. The formality and traditional

rituals of a Debutante Ball seem to have held their appeal and

the students are highly motivated to conquer the challenge

ahead. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments

of our Year 11 and 12 dancers in a month’s time! Thank you

to Ms Angus for the significant investment of time and careful

planning that sits behind the 2021 Debutante Ball.

Planning for the construction of a new entrance and

administrative area at the Junior Campus continues, with

School Council exploring a range of options to improve access

and functionality. With our school community growing, it is

exciting to consider how our buildings and grounds can best

provide a warm welcome upon entry to the site. The location

of the office close to the main entry gates on Brooke Street is

expected to significantly improve visitor access, and open up

further possibilities for the reconfiguration of space within the

main building.

Our 2022 Prep and Year 7 transition schedules have been

finalised, with key events during Education Week kick-

starting the process for current and prospective students and

families. The Prep open mornings and Year 7 information

evening will bring students, parents and staff together to

explore the programs, facilities and opportunities on offer at

Camperdown College. Please share dates and details with

other interested family members, friends and neighbours;

encourage them to make contact with the office if they are

unable to attend but would instead like to arrange an

individual tour. Our 2021 Prep and Year 7 students have come

so far in their learning already and will be terrific ambassadors

for the younger students coming through next year.

Our Vision: Camperdown College will be a high performing school that produces graduates well equipped to succeed beyond school and contribute

actively to the community.

Congratulations:

Isabelle Eldridge passed her Shodan (1st) Dan Senior Black Belt grading. At 15 years of age, she is the youngest

in Camperdown/Terang Dojo’s history to be awarded the senior Dan rank. A mighty effort! See page 15.

Josh Colman and Shaun Moroney have been selected to represent the South West at Country Soccer

Championships in Geelong over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. They will play seven games over the

weekend and we wish them all the best. Ben Waterfall and Dylan Robertson represented the College at the Secondary Schools Clay Target

Championships in Colac last week. Firing a single barrel at ten targets per round, the students were able to

show off their skills. Ben managed to hit nine on his best round and Dylan six. Well done to both Dylan and

Ben.

Cross Country:

Our House Cross Country was held last Friday in beautiful, sunny conditions. Some very fine performances were showcases displaying

excellent level of fitness and endurance. Commendation must go to all students who showed persistence and resilience just by showing

up and having a go. These students will be rewarded with house celebrations scheduled for next week. Congratulations to age champions

and students who will compete at the Interschool Cross Country on Monday.

Year 7 Information Evening:

Organisation is underway for our Year 7 Information Evening to be held on Wednesday 26 th May during Education Week. Due to

COVID-19 density limits, all visitors will commence the evening in the AG Daws Hall before touring the Senior Campus unlike previous

years where we have commenced in the Library. A number of Year 7 and 8 students have been invited to conduct activities on the

evening and Year 11 and 12 students will lead tour groups. Permission forms will be sent home next week. We are looking forward to

showcasing all that the Senior Campus has to offer.

Debutante Ball:

Dance lessons commenced last week for our debutantes. It is lovely to witness the students enjoying themselves despite many of them

being out of their comfort zones. Expression of interest from Year 2/3 students to carry out the role of page boy and flowergirl were

called for via Compass last week. Due to the amount of names that we received, we went to a draw and I am proud to announce that our

page boy and flowergirl for this year’s Debutante Ball are: Reagan Webb and Blake Evans.

NAPLAN:

NAPLAN tests concluded yesterday with the Numeracy test. A number of students missed various tests due to illness and will catch up

on these throughout next week. All tests were conducted online and it was pleasing to see that our network was able to cope with this

demand.

Community Service:

VCAL students, as part of their Personal Development/Work Related Skills subject, are volunteering their time to assist the wider

community. Last week, the students met with Colin Hayman, secretary of the Camperdown Cemetery Trust. He showed the students

around the cemetery and outlined projects that need to be done. This week, the students commenced cleaning the memorial wall,

weeding and raking leaves around the graves. In addition, the students have written to and subsequently met with Leura Oval Committee

of Management representatives and will embark on replacing the seating around the netball courts.

Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal

National Literacy and Numeracy Testing (NAPLAN):

This week our Year 3 and 5 students embraced the opportunity to showcase what they know and can do when they

undertook the national literacy and numeracy testing program (NAPLAN). Students were involved in four separate

tests this week, and showcased a positive mindset and attitude towards this requirement. We are already so very

proud of our students and their ability to show commitment and persistence this week during this important testing

period. Students that have been absent over any of the testing days, will have the opportunity over the next week

to participate in a catch up session to ensure they have the same opportunity to showcase their skill set over the

main curriculum areas of Literacy and Numeracy.

Year 3/4 Mini Excursions – Exploring our Community:

This week our Year 3/4 students ventured out to explore our local community which proved to be a lovely way to spend two afternoons

of learning. Students investigated the Mount Leura Environment Centre and surrounds on Tuesday afternoon and local historical

buildings Wednesday afternoon on a tour led by Maree Belyea. These local excursions were part of their Year 3/4 inquiry unit studies

for Term 2 and we are grateful for the assistance of Graham Arkinstall and Becky McCann along with Maree, in connecting our students

with these wonderful opportunities.

Division Athletics:

Congratulations to Charlie Unwin, Abey McLachlan, Philippa Kempton, Quinn Clark and Nate Castle who represented Camperdown

College last Friday at the Division Athletics in Warrnambool. We are extremely proud of each of these students and their efforts on the

day. Making it to this level of competition is an achievement in itself. Results from the day are as follows:

Pippa Kempton: 10th 1500m

Charlie Unwin: 9th 1500m

Senior Campus News

Abey McLachlan: 7th 1500m and 3rd High Jump

Quinn Clark: 13th 1500m

Nate Castle: 14th 800m, 8th 1500m and 1st High Jump

Nate’s amazing achievement of finishing 1st in High Jump has qualified him to compete in the next level of competition which is

Regional Athletics in October. Thanks to the parents who travelled to Warrnambool with our students and to Mr Attrill for his

involvement on the day.

Mother’s Day Breakfast and Stall:

Much thanks and appreciation to all of our wonderful Parents & Friends volunteers who worked tirelessly last Friday, and on days

before, to facilitate our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast and Stall at the Junior Campus. It was warming seeing so many mothers,

grandmothers and special friends enjoying breakfast catered for by our dedicated volunteers, before students enjoyed shopping for the

perfect gift for their Mum/special person at the Mother’s Day Stall. Thank you to all families who donated such thoughtful gifts. We

hope all of our mothers felt spoilt and had a lovely day last Sunday.

Responsible Pet Ownership:

Our Prep and Year 1/2 students were treated to a visit from a spoodle called Tucker and his owner Barb on Monday as part of the

Responsible Pet Ownership program. Students were exposed to appropriate ways to interact safely with dogs and were encouraged to

enact some of this learning with Tucker.

CDSSA District Cross Country Carnival:

We had 42 students compete in today’s CDSSA District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat. The top six finishers in our House Cross

Country Carnival qualified to compete against students from surrounding schools today in courses that ranged from 1km to 3km. We

look forward to sharing both the school and individual results from today with our school community.

Walk Safely to School Day:

Today was Walk Safely to School Day and it was fantastic seeing many families taking up the opportunity to walk to school and discuss

the importance of being safe when crossing roads as well as the importance of staying active. Students were supplied with a Walk Safely

to School tattoo which they donned for the occasion, before enjoying breakfast in the BER.

Education Week:

Beginning Monday 24th May, we will be celebrating Education Week at the Junior Campus with the theme of this year’s event being

Building Connections. This week of celebrations will provide the opportunity for us to build connections by welcoming families,

grandparents and interested kinder families into our exciting and flourishing school environment. Students will have many opportunities

to engage with community groups and be exposed to interesting career paths throughout the week with activities and guest speaker

sessions scheduled. Please see page 9 for further information regarding the week.

Year 3/4 Local Excursions In Year 3/4, we are learning about the

community. On Wednesday 12th May, we

went to the Historical Society. We learned

a lot about the Aboriginals and we also

learned that almost all the buildings were

burned down at some stage and rebuilt.

By Reagan Webb.

In Year 3/4 we are learning about

Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal people.

On Tuesday 11th May, we went up to the

Mount Leura Education Centre to learn

about our local flora and fauna. We also

collected materials to create our own

model Aboriginal huts.

After the Mother’s Day Breakfast, Prep – Year 6 students were given the opportunity to purchase a gift from the Mother’s Day Stall to give to their mum, grandmother or special person on Mother’s Day.

Our students are extremely lucky to be able to benefit from the selflessness of our parent volunteers.

“Teachers, staff

and Parents &

Friends did an

amazing job again!

It was so lovely to

receive all my gifts

on Mother’s Day.”

Rachel Van Den Meiracker

Earlier in the week, Prep – Year 6 students were blessed with Ms Smithwick’s creativity when they were supported in making a pair of earrings for their Mum/special person. They also personalised a gift card in their Art sessions.

Face masks on school buses Face masks continue to be one of the most important ways we can help slow the spread of COVID-19 in

the community. To ensure public health directions are being followed, students aged 12 years and over

must wear a face mask when on public transport, school buses and when in taxis or ride share vehicles –

unless they have a lawful exemption.

Students enjoyed a special visit from Tucker and his owner Barb on Monday as part of the Responsible Pet Ownership program. Students watched in awe as Barb instructed Tucker to sit on his mat, look at the students and get back into his cage. Some of the key messages the students recalled were: not to pat dogs while they are eating or sleeping, not to tease dogs and always ask the owner if you would like to pat their dog. Students danced and sang a song to remind themselves of the steps they need to remember when wanting to pat a dog down the street. 1. Stop 3 metres away and ask the owner ‘Can I please pat your dog?’ 2. Approach the dog by walking in a banana shape with your hand closed (Remember your thumb needs to be on the inside). 3. Let him smell your hand. 4. Move to the side and gently pat him on the back. Selected students from each class had the opportunity to follow these steps and pat Tucker before many curious questions were asked about pets.

Small or large donations would be very much appreciated. If you are bringing in any used items, can you please make sure that they are cleaned beforehand.

Lauren Murphy, STEM Teacher

Students in the Junior Campus STEM Room have had a wonderful start to the school year and are very engaged in the learning that has taken place.

Year 5/6 students this term have finished their lighthouses. Students created, built and made a circuit to make their lighthouse light up. They really enjoyed this project and it was wonderful to see all the different designs that students came up with. Students in Year 5/6 are now using their engineering skills to govern and build a small town that uses renewable energy and a checklist of criteria.

Year 3/4 students are engaging in a Digital Technology project about Camperdown. Students have been learning how to use the Makey Makeys (a simple circuit keyboard) and Scratch to be able to play a video game. Students will use the skills learnt from these two programs to create an interactive poster about Camperdown.

Year 1/2 students are also studying Camperdown and have used their computer skills to create a small poster about our little town. In the coming weeks students will be designing and creating a Camperdown diorama.

Prep students have been learning about living and non-living things. They have been making living creatures, such as spiders and ladybugs. Students have also been investigating and classifying what makes things living and non-living and looking at these under a microscope.

We cannot wait to show you more of what we have been creating, building and designing in the STEM room in the coming weeks.

Isabelle Eldridge was successful on the

weekend in passing her Shodan (1st) Dan

Senior Black Belt grading. At 15 years of

age, she is the youngest in

Camperdown/Terang Dojo’s history to

be awarded the senior Dan rank.

The grading takes place over three days at Brucknell Scout Camp where all attempting to ‘rank up’ put

themselves to the test.

It’s a weekend where not only skill and technique is tested but it is also a huge mental test. With the days

starting at 4.30am and finishing at 11pm, it’s considered a massive achievement if it can be overcome.

For six weekends in the lead-up, Isabelle was also required to attend compulsory black belt classes to

prepare for what lies ahead and ensure a high standard.

The final test came on Sunday where Isabelle was to perform nine Forms and eight Kata (synchronised

and preset karate sequences). Following on from this was 10 minutes of Kumite (sparring) with a new

opponent every minute to ensure they were tested and the opponent was “fresh”. Once this had been

completed, it was a 30 minute, 1200 rep burn fitness stamina test all on top of late nights, early morning

starts and a weekend of karate! Congratulations Isabelle – we are very proud of you!

Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill 2021: Information for Parents, Carers and Families

Victorian school communities are overwhelmingly positive and safe places for teaching and learning where we all play a role in supporting

students in their achievements, engagement and wellbeing needs. At Camperdown College we are very grateful for the positive working

relationships we enjoy with our families, and for the respectful way in which issues are raised. This helps us to provide a safe and

supportive workplace for our staff and sets a positive example for all of our young learners.

It is likely that you have heard the recent media announcements that the Victorian Government has introduced the Education and Training

Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) Bill 2021. If passed through parliament, the proposed Bill would come into

effect in May 2022.

The Bill aims to protect and keep school communities safe by preventing and deterring violent and aggressive behaviours from adult

members of the school community and ensure that schools are positive, safe and inclusive places to work and learn. This Bill will apply

to the small minority of adult members of the Victorian school community who engage in this behaviour, after early conflict resolution

measures through non-legislative avenues have failed.

The proposed law will empower principals and other authorised persons to issue School Community Safety Orders in response to parents,

carers and other adult members of the school community who engage in harmful, threatening, abusive or disruptive behaviours on school

grounds or places where school activities take place, or inappropriate and harmful communication through emails and social media.

This Bill will apply if a member of the school community engages in this behaviour when all other reasonable interventions have failed.

The changes would ensure that all members of the school community are kept safe and to minimise any harm to their safety and wellbeing.

There will be internal and external review mechanisms in place if a person who is subject to a School Community Safety Order wishes to

appeal an Order.

Arrangements will be available to ensure parents can still remain engaged in their child’s learning to and to minimise any disruption to

the student.

This Bill would not replace the existing avenues to

raise any complaints, issues or suggestions with

schools. Our Camperdown College Community

Grievance Policy, available on the school website,

outlines our school’s procedures for managing

complaints. By continuing to engage with these

communication channels in a respectful and

collaborative manner, we can continue to work

together to support our students

Further information about the details of the Bill will

be communicated to you if the Bill is passed by

parliament.
