Community Health - A Community Health Nurse visits the school. Her name is Manon Spronck and she works to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of her work is focused on early intervention, the School Entry Health Assessment program and to provide free information, assessment, health counselling and referral. If you have any concerns about your child please contact Manon on 93140100.

Student Behaviour 1, 2, 3 Magic Program - 1, 2, 3 Magic is used at Newton Primary School. It is a whole school process for behaviour management which is consistent, positive, efficient and encourages the students to take responsibility for their behaviour. The emphasis is on being positive and acknowledging appropriate behaviour. The system consists of aiming for 4 positives to each negative. The students are aware of the rules and appropriate behaviour. If they do not demonstrate this they are given 3 warnings and 5 minutes ‘time out’ (in the classroom). The process is repeated if necessary. If a third set of warnings is given a suitable consequence is determined by the teacher.

Instrumental Music Program The year 5 and 6 students participating in this program for 2019 will have instruction with students from Spearwood Alternative School and South Coogee Primary School. Newton hosts the music program with four School of Instrumental Music teachers, holding all the classes in our Performing Arts Building from 8.45-9.45am on Tuesdays.

Before and After School Care - Teddy Bears Corner Before and after school care is available each day through Teddy Bears Corner at Hilton Primary School. The school office has flyers and enrolment information or please call Donna on 0431 794 436 at Teddy Bears Corner.

School Attendance 2019 It is your Responsibility…....Regular attendance at school is fundamental to your child’s learning. Consistent attendance and participation are essential for your child’s social and academic learning. As parents or legal guardians of an enrolled child, you are responsible under the School Education Act 1999 to ensure the attendance of your child at school every day. It is important to assist your child’s achievement and learning by making regular school attendance a priority in your child’s life. Arriving before the 8.50am siren is essential to your child’s learning.

The Department of Education’s Student Attendance Policy requires parents/guardians to provide an acceptable explanation to the school principal for any absence of their children. Principals must authorise all absences and the school strongly discourages students taking holidays during school term. The Act defines health, religious and cultural observances as reasonable cause for a school absence and the absence would be recorded as ‘authorised’ by the principal. As the parent/guardian you must obtain the principal’s approval for planned absence.

Newton Primary School Board - the School Board will meet on February 25 at 4pm in the staffroom. The Board has two parent positions vacant. I encourage parents to nominate. Please call for information.

Anaphylaxis and Behaviour Policies - Please read carefully Newton Primary School’s Anaphylaxis Policy, Codes of Conduct Policies and the School Behaviour Policy that will be sent home in the coming weeks. These are very important documents.

Assembly Dates The assembly dates for the term are listed on the term planner on the back of this newsletter to allow parents to have as much warning as is possible.

I am sure 2019 will be a great year for all of our students and I look forward to working with them and their families.

Linda Humphreys, Principal

Welcome back to all the families. Wishing you all a prosperous 2019.

GRATITUDE JARS - “The more grateful you are, the more present you become, the more joy you bring into your life”. Begin each day with an open heart and think of what you are grateful for. You will see life differently. In a world where there is so much negativity and sad, long faces, let us develop and encourage positivity in the children. This year we as a school have decided to record things we are grateful for. Teachers are creatively using boxes, scrap books and containers to encourage the children to recognise what they are grateful for. This helps the children recognise how much they have. As parents, you can encourage them to do the same at home.

Tales for Tots. The program, Tales for Tots, started in June 2018 at Newton Primary School and is run by the School Chaplain. The Mums and toddlers come to the conference room on Tuesdays from 9 – 9:30 am. We read a story, sing some rhymes, do some colouring and play with the blocks and Legos. So far, there has been 4 to 6 toddlers eve-ry week. Tales for Tots is for children aged 18 months to pre-school age. This encourages early literacy and listening skills. They play in a safe and relaxed environment. They also meet and make friends with others who may be in their class next year. The Mums also enjoy a bit of socialisation. This year the program will be on Tuesday mornings, this year. If anyone with toddlers would like to join, they are welcome to come. Siblings are welcome as well as other members of the community with preschool aged children. For further information, please contact Newton Primary School @ 08 94184122.

This year again, I am here to support you and your children. Feel free to come and chat if you need someone to listen to you.

Sheba Thomas, School Chaplain.

Sun safety

It is important to talk to your children about sun safety and teach them good sun safety habits. Here are some tips;

*Slip on some sun-protective clothing – that covers as much skin as possible.

*Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ or higher sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.

*Slap on a hat – that protects your face, head, neck and ears.

*Seek shade when possible.

*Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.

Extra care should be taken between 10am and 3pm when UV levels reach their peak. For more information see the Cancer Council website:

www.cancer.org.au.

PARKING

Please do not use the staff car park to drop off/pick up children or for parking.

Parking along Marvell Avenue needs to be done with care, as visibility is very limited. Parking for the disabled is located at the canteen end of the school, off Newton Road and also in front of the main administration building. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON HOME VERGES AROUND THE SCHOOL - the council do regular checks and will fine offenders.

STUDENTS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL

Students are supervised from 8.30am. They are to go straight to class where their teacher will expect them to get ready for the day. Students arriving just before the 8.30am bell report to the path outside the Principal’s office. After school supervision is from 3-3.10pm.

ONLINE SAFETY Your child will bring home a parent’s guide to online safety. The practical guide is a good start to understanding online challenges and supporting your child/ren in the use of online devices. Last year I worked with our year 1-6 students around safe online practices. Teachers will again, during the year, educate students to being safe online, however we value the support of parents as well with online use at home. Mrs Efthyvoulos Deputy Principal

COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELLBEING NOTICES A note from the Community Health Nurse Welcome to the new school year. My name is Manon Spronck and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school. Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so stu-dents may reach their full potential. A major part of our work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program. Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential. If you have a concern about your child’s health or development please contact me via your schools admin office. School Entry Health Assessment All children in Western Australia are offered a health assessment during their first year of primary school. This usually occurs in kindergarten and is provided by the local Community Health Nurse. The program is an excellent opportunity to look at the health and development of each child at the beginning of school life. The assessments are simple, standard tests which are non-invasive, quick and easy. This year the assessment will include: vision, hearing, height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), Lift the Lip (looking for visible signs of tooth decay), General health (Developmental or other health concerns that you mention or that the nurse or teacher has noticed). If the results for your child suggest there may be a problem, the Community Health Nurse will ring you to talk about further assessment and possible referral. Your child’s results will be sent home after their health assessment has been completed. Results are always treated confidentially. School Entry Health Assessment forms will be distributed for parents to complete during the year. Please complete and sign the form and return it as soon as possible. I look forward to working with you and your family. Please phone if you wish to discuss the School Entry Health Assessment.
