Lobethal Community Kindergarten Newsletter Issue number 8 Term 3, week 6, 2017
We acknowledge that we are on the traditional lands of the Peramangk people and we recognise their connection with the land. We will help care for and respect this land together.
Our lovely Director is out of action at the moment, but we look forward to her return early next week once she gets permission to return from her surgeon.
We all miss her a lot and can’t wait for her to come back and play with us all.

Literacy Learning
“Writing and Reading float on a sea of talking” – James Britton
As we come to the end of Book Week I thought it might be a good idea to unpack some of our literacy learning
at kindy over the past few weeks.
As you know, we were able to share some of our favourite stories at kindy this week. This was a powerful
experience for the children – they shared favourites with a small group of peers and most could clearly
articulate why these books were their favourites. Current research shows that children need to be exposed to
roughly 2000 stories before they can begin to read – even with a story a night that is a huge number so we
appreciate any time you spend at home reading with your child. Learning to love books from an early age can
foster great literacy habits but did you know that exposing children to many other types of texts is also a
powerful way to help them catch the literacy bug? When children see you writing a shopping list, reading the
paper, or looking up a recipe they learn that text has meaning and purpose. Similarly, at kindy, much of our
“writing” is purposeful – signs for the shop, a handwritten card, a map in our bush kindy journal, a list of things
we need to get from foodland etc. The addition of motorcycle magazines by the couch has provided lots of
literacy exposure for our bike-mad children and non-fiction texts such as bird guides and reptile books have
fascinated other children.
There is also a clear link between nursery rhymes, fairytales and early literacy success. This is because nursery
rhymes and fairytales often use rhyme, repetition, and predictable text/sequencing. We have been exploring
rhyme and alliteration at group times. The children are enjoying making up nonsense rhymes and songs and
“playing” with language. Our stories have focussed on rhyming words – and the children have enjoyed accessing
the Julia Donaldson audio books to see well known tales like “Room on the Broom” on the Imac.
We have facilitated fine motor development with the use of plasticine, tricky origami lizards and frogs
(requiring some careful cutting and folding) , and the continued use of manipulative equipment like the tap- tap
and lego. Some of the children have also given knitting and weaving a go.
Small groups have been doing “focus stories” which focus on a particular area of work (for example speech,
receptive language, or problem-solving) Working in a small group encourages children’s voice and deeper
levels of engagement with a text. As you can see we have someVERY busy Literacy Learners

Recording their predictions
Exploring motion and gravity.
Experimenting with volume. Adding rocks to see when the water will overflow.
Putting flowers in coloured water to see what happens.
The foaming dragon experiment... bicarb, vinegar and red food colouring!
Questioning and wondering, what happens when you put mushrooms in coloured water?
Choosing science experiments. Watching, observing and noticing oil and water mixtures.
Kerry’s Update: Science Week.....14th-18th August
Week four was Science week... and these children are my kind of scientists! They are interested and fascinated by explosions and fireworks! Their eyes light up at the possibilities, they watch in awe and excitement as we test our wonders. We didn't have explosions, or fireworks, but they still enjoyed watching what happens when you combine bicarbonate soda and Vinegar.
We really do have scientists at kindy! These children really fit the definition of a scientist...
"A scientist is a person engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge that describes and predicts the natural world." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScientistTo be a scientist we begin with a question or a wonder. We make a prediction, we test or experiment and we notice what happens.
Children are scientists in their play each and everyday. They don't always verbalise their wonders, but they are often trialling, testing and experimenting with toys, tools, materials or natural items. They then become noticers, who watch, consider theories and maybe then begin the process again with a new wonder or question. As they trial, test, experiment, wonder, share ideas, theorise, notice, question and think they are continuously learning and developing their ideas.
