An extensive terminology develops trough a course of time which refects the importance attributed to them by the early Christians. We must resource to texts of which old versions have been preserved only, either in Latin or in oriental languages. On the basics of description of ritual acts, vessels for holding liquid are mentioned in Greek, Jewish, Latin terms. It is our intention, by as complete examination of the texts as possible, to determine the origins and meanings of these group of terms for liturgical vessels. Special attention is paid to the use of pagan and Jewish terminology which has been assumed exercised a direct infuence upon the early Christian usage. On the other hand there is an attempt to avoid some of these terms by early Christians. Quotations from the New Testament, historical sources or scientifc papers are sometimes in absence of the data related to the liturgical vessels as well as its translation versions due to many transcriptions and interpreters, consist a large number of diferent terms for each ves-sel. Sometimes the data from the frst three centuries are so or a meaning is still in such process of development that the later literature must be consulted in order to see how an early meaning has became established in early Christian linguistic usage.
