getting started at 7:00 pm. Join us to learn about our 2012 accomplishments and financial performance as well as next year’s plans and budget. We will have director elections and learn about our latest Community Champion while refreshments are served and door prizes awarded.

Willow Shores Big ToyIf you haven’t checked out the new big toy over at the Willow Shores Park, you should. Much progress has been accomplished and it’s quite a sight to behold…and to enjoy. Stop by and take a look and go on the swings.

Bay Forest Annual Homeowner SurveyThe votes are in and your input has been tabulated. The latest Top Community Issues include some “old friends” and a few surprises. A summary of the survey results along with how the Board will act on them will presented at the Annual Homeowner Meeting, October 29, and published at www.bayforest.info next month.

Common Area Inspections & MaintenanceJust like Bay Forest homeowners must keep up with their own homes, property, trees and landscaping, so must we do the same with our parks, esplanades, and common area trees and shrubs. Our property values can only be maintained when we all do our parts. It takes time, money, effort and commitment…by each homeowner individually and by all of us collectively.

In order to manage our common areas, we’ve divided our parks, sidewalks, fences and esplanades into five zones with each one assigned to a director. Zones inspections are being conducted and lists of work items are being made. Once we’ve identified what needs to be done, we’ll line up contractors if necessary. If instead, the work can be done “in house” by homeowners, then we’ll schedule Bay Forest Days and get to work. Earlier this year a dozen volunteers pitched in to help remove undesirable scrub plants and trash trees from the Space Center esplanade between El Dorado and Bay Area. Soon there will be new, intentional plantings to continue the make over.

So, if there’s a special spot in our community you want to help maintain, let us know at [email protected] and we’ll put you on one of our Zone Teams. Otherwise, be on the lookout for Bay Forest Day announcements and come help us keep up our property values.

Notice of Annual Homeowner MeetingThe Annual Homeowner Meeting of the Bay Forest Community Association will be held on Monday, October 29, 2012. Registration will begin at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the Clear Lake Presbyterian Church located at 1511 El Dorado Blvd, Houston. Agenda1. Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Q: What do you do with a yard that gets almost full shade?A: Rip up all the grass, and create one big beautiful bed, complete with a meandering pathway through lots of shade loving plants. That's just what Terri and robert Proch did at 15506 Parkchester. The only grass in their yard is on the tree lawn which not only serves to separate their house from the street, but also provides continuity with their neighbors. In the Proch's yard you will find lots of Monkey Grass, Hostas and Dwarf Juniper. In addition to these plants, they have provided lots of visual interest by having a pebbled front walk with a sitting area just large enough for two Adirondak chairs. A cobblestone-like walkway entices visitors to explore the side yard. The other side of the yard is peppered with Monkey grass and Juniper. They have even managed to grow some moss to cover boulders and have a blue ceramic fountain to provide a soothing break from all the green.

Page 7: Bay Forest Community News, October 2012

October 2012 7

Q: What do you do with a yard that gets almost full sun?A: Rip up most of the grass and plant lots of sun-loving tropical plants, just like Alberto and Gloria Montero have done at 15507 Poplar Springs. The Montero's have cut way back on the grass in their front yard to allow more space for ornamental grasses, ferns, Alocasias, and even a Monstera plant that all do well in direct sun. Stone also features prominently in this garden. Terracotta urns placed on their sides spill lush green Asparagus Ferns that seem to march across the yard, and a stone path doubles as a border between the plant bed and the grass. There are even stones that are sculpturally stacked, and a colorful mosaic stepping stone near the front walk. These features and the dramatic plants are all focal points that draw and hold our attention.

One of the things that these very different yards have in common is that they have not crowded their plants. Each plant has plenty of room to grow and thrive. When you see the Proch's and the Montero's, be sure to give them your congratulations for a Yard Well Done.

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubNEWS FLASH: THE DATE OF THE FIRST PARTY OF THE BAY FOREST GOURMET CLUB HAS CHANGED: Due to scheduling changes, the first big party, with a Greek theme, will be on OCTOBer 13, 2012. Bring your appetite and enjoy the first party celebrating the 2004 Olympics held in Athens. The other four venues will take place in the cities that hosted the 1968, 1992, 2008, and 2012 Olympics. Can you name those cities? Meanwhile, here is a recipe for a traditional Greek dessert from the Art of Greek Cookery.

GalatobourekoHint: Make the syrup first so it has time to cool

1 quart milk1/2 cup cream of rice1/2 cup semolina flour1 cup sugarPinch of salt1tsp lemon zest1tsp orange zest1 tsp vanilla4 eggs separated1 cup butter, melted20 filo pastry sheets1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Scald the milk; add the cream of rice, semolina, sugar, salt, lemon zest, orange zest, and vanilla, and cook stirring constantly until mixture is thickened

Cool lightly; beat the egg yolks and add to the mixture, being careful not to let the eggs curdle

Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for two minutes.

Let cool, and then fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

Butter 10 sheets of filo and place one on top of the other in a 9 x 13 inch pan. Add the cooled custard mixture and top with another 10 buttered filo sheets. With a sharp knife, cut the top layer of the pasty sheets into diagonal pieces.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 50 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with cinnamon; pour cooled syrup over the hot cake and let stand. Do not cover as it will make the cake soggy.

SyrupIn a sauce pan combine 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 cups of water and the juice of 1 lemon; bring to a boil and boil for 15 minutes. Cool.

Get Maximum Blooms From Maximum Blooms 3-8-3For years, I've been a huge proponent of using an array of slow-release blooming-plant foods. The reason there's so many these days is probably because "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

But the man who originally developed slow-release granular blooming-plant food took it a bit more personally and decided to develop a companion product that would help any blooming plant exceed all expectations. And he would make it 100 percent organic to ensure there would be no more imitations.

This is the story of MicroLife Maximum Blooms 3-8-3 and the often-imitated Nature Blooms, both from Houston-based San Jacinto Environmental Supplies. That's the home of MicroLife products.

Mike Serant (a.k.a. Mr. MicroLife) developed the granular Nature Blooms controlled-release blooming-plant food years ago. It's an 85 percent organic 14-14-14 fertilizer that gets great results. Soon, though, other manufacturers started blending their own controlled-release granular products based on the successful Nature Blooms formula. Although a bit perturbed by the competition, Mike went to work developing Maximum Blooms 3-8-3, a one-of-a-kind liquid organic blooming-plant food that could work in conjunction with any granular plant food.

The secret this time, was a careful blending of fish hydrolsate (the purest form of fish amino acids, which also smells less), kelp, humic acid, molasses, and selected plant hormones and extracts. Mike believes this combination provides unparalleled plant nutrition and performance. With normal foliar feeding, Maximum Blooms will cause plants to set more and bigger blooms. Research has also shown that the blooms' overall color is deeper and more radiant. And since it's a 100 percent organic product, its continued use also benefits plants by improving soil structure and reducing insect and disease problems.

randy’s lawn Fertilization ScheduleFor southern grasses including: St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia

• FERTILIZE October-November – apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. Ratios vary, but make sure they are “winter” or “fall” formulas designed for southern grasses. (examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16, 10-5-14) Will make lawns winter-hardy.

• FUNGICIDE September-October – To control the dreaded Brownpatch fungal disease (symmetrical brown circles in the grass) you must prevent it from coming up with a systemic lawn fungicide with Bayleton, Terrachlor, Banner or Benomyl.

• HERBICIDE (Pre-Emergent controls to prevent weeds) Late October-Early November – use two (2) different pre-emergent herbicides, to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and March. First is a pre-emergent with Portrait or Gallery for broadleaf weeds like clover. Second, use a pre-emergent with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan for grassy weeds like poa anna or annual bluegrass. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.

• INSECTICIDESIt is our belief on GardenLine, as a way to be kind to the environment, that you do not put down insecticides unless you know you have a problem. However, be prepared during the hot summer months — July through September — to attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregular shaped spots in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply a granular insecticide like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in a broadcast applicator throughout the rest of the yard.

Visit the GardenLine Home Page: http://ktrh.com/pages/gardenline2.html

Look for GardenLine with Randy Lemmon on Facebook to stay up to date with all the GardenLine news!

Don't assume, though, that this is just an organic version of a 1-2-1 fertilizer like Miracle Gro ... this product needs to be used only every 30-60 days, rather than every two weeks as suggested for synthetic blooming-plant foods.

While Nature Blooms is still available and should be used in conjunction with the Maximum Blooms, you can use any granular organic fertilizer as your starting point and then use Maximum Blooms as a foliar spray.

Now that it's time to start thinking about winterizing your lawn and getting started on fall color, you couldn't pick a better time to visit Enchanted Gardens.

Texas education Agency Taps CCISD to Develop New learning StandardsLeague City, Texas- The Clear Creek Independent School District is among 23 school districts selected to participate in the High Performing Schools Consortium. The consortium will work with the Texas Education Agency and legislators to develop new learning standards, assessments, and accountability systems. “The school districts selected to participate in the consortium are already known for their innovative work and are looked to by many as educational leaders,” said State Education Commissioner Michael Williams. “This exciting project will help the Governor, legislative leaders and the Texas Education Agency craft a sound, well-thought out plan to move all Texas schools to the next performance level.”

For several years the Clear Creek Independent School District has been working with the Schlechty Center, national experts on school transformation. Click here to watch a video of CCISD’s progress in this area (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5hea80ALDI&list=PL9CEB14B3E533BCFF&index=2&feature=plpp_video). Dr. Greg Smith, CCISD Superintendent of Schools, is also one of the authors of Creating a New Vision for Public Education. “As you can imagine we are thrilled to join 22 other high performing school districts in developing and piloting a more meaningful approach to assessments and accountability. I would like to thank the Texas Education Agency and the 82nd Legislature for recognizing the need to explore new ways to engage students in the 21st century, best prepare them for a competitive and global workforce, and measure performance through meaningful assessments.”

The following CCISD schools will be directly involved in the process: Clear Horizons Early College High School; Clear Springs High School; Clear View Education Center; Creekside Intermediate; Westbrook Intermediate; North Pointe Elementary; and Stewart Elementary. These schools were selected to ensure a fair geographic representation of the district.

The consortium will make recommendations in four key areas:

1. Digital learning--Engagement of students in digital learning, including the use of electronic textbooks and instructional materials and courses offered through the Texas Virtual School Network;

2. Learning standards--Standards that a student must master to be successful in a competitive postsecondary environment;

3. Multiple assessments--Various methods of measuring student progress to keep students, parents and schools informed, and the actions consortium participants are taking to improve learning; and

4. Local control--Ways in which reliance on local input and decision-making enable communities and parents to be involved in the important decisions regarding the education of their children.

The academically talented high school seniors who earned National Merit Semifinalist status have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $32 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test (PSAT). The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's essay and information about the Semifinalist's participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Dr. Greg Smith Named Superintendent of the year in Texas

Greg Smith, Superintendent of Schools for the Clear Creek In-dependent School District, has been named the 2012 Superinten-dent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards. “Of interest to the state selection committee was Smith’s belief that learning needs to be redefined. He stressed that kids need a love for learning, the ability to think, learn, and relearn and not just be test takers. He recognizes that we educate for jobs that don’t exist today. The committee also noted that through his love of children, Smith has made the community a better place”, said Barbara Wil-liams with the Texas Association of School Boards.

Smith was nominated by the CCISD Board of Trustees for his student-centered leadership. “Congratulations to Dr. Greg Smith for being named the 2012 Superintendent of the Year. This most prestigious award recognizes one outstanding superintendent of the more than 1,000 throughout the state of Texas,” said Board President ken Baliker. “Greg’s leadership style epitomizes the first “C” in CCISD, for Courage, as he has had the helm during a difficult fiscal period for public education and made decisions among competing priorities that keep kids’ education first. We are blessed that Dr. Smith calls CCISD home.”

Dr. Smith, who has been the district’s superintendent since 2008, says this award is one he shares with all of those who have in-vested in children. “This award could not have happened without having a great team made up of trustees, staff, parents but most of all, great students,” said Smith. “I am humbled by this recognition because Texas is home to many outstanding superintendents.”

Shortly after joining CCISD, Smith rallied the entire community to create a vision for the children of Clear Creek ISD. While em-ployee and parental involvement are naturally part of any strate-gic planning process, Smith made this more than a ceremonial procedure. He became the listener and the learner, allowing the aspirations of the school board, teachers, principals, parents and students help craft a five-year strategic plan. The plan has fueled his every decision and discussion for the past four years and has resulted in an increase in student performance. In June, more than 97% of CCISD students graduated with plans to attend college, the workforce or the military.

Dinosaur Train Day at Armand Bayou Saturday Oct 6th

Come meet Buddy the Dinosaur and enjoy Dinosaur Train Nature Trackers Club activities.

For this special event, ABNC will be open for FREE on Saturday Oct 6 from 10AM to 4PM. A large crowd is expected, and overflow parking is being provided at uH Clear Lake with shuttle bus service provided by Harris County Precinct 2.

Prairie Pandemonium Oct 20thAre you looking for a fun way to make a dif-ference in your local environment? Here it is: Prairie Pandemo-nium! Help Armand Bayou Nature Center restore the tall grass prairie, a critical na-tive habitat. As a part of ongoing restoration

work, ABNC volunteers have grown two thousand pots of lo-cally rare native grass at the nature center for transplantation into the prairie preserve.

We need your help to plant them. You will become a part of a team planting effort. This important event will bring the ABNC prairies closer to a climax state of native wildflowers and grasses. Tall grass prairie once covered at least nine million acres along the coastal plain of south-central Texas and southwestern Loui-siana. Today, more than 99% has been lost to agriculture and urbanization. What remains is highly fragmented and severely threatened by development and non-native vegetation. At seven hundred acres, Armand Bayou Nature Center manages one of the most extensive holdings of coastal tallgrass prairie in the lower Galveston Bay watershed.

Sign-in will begin at am and the project will last until noon. Lunch and a t-shirt are included, and there will be door prizes too. Volunteers must be 12 years of age or older, and if under 18 to be accompanied by an adult. Participants will need sturdy shoes and clothes that can get muddy. The nature center will provide tools and work gloves.

Registraton Is Required To Participate. To register, contact kelli at [email protected] .

Ladybug Realtors’ Bay Forest STUDENT OF THE MONTH“I love living in Bay Forest and riding my bike around the neighborhood!” says Sabrina Curran, our student of the month. Playing midfielder for my soccer team, keeps me busy throughout the year; as does the Blue Marlins swim team in the summer. In addition, I enjoy dancing classical ballet and tap at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (RAFA). My musical hobbies are playing piano and the viola. Outdoors is where I love to spend my free time – mainly playing with my younger brother, Christopher; my three golden retrievers; and my wonderful neighborhood friends.upon completing my 5th grade year, I was presented the girl’s American Legion Award at Falcon Pass Elementary, as well as, the President’s Education Award for outstanding academic excellence. I am currently a 6th grader in the WAVE program at Westbrook Intermediate and love it! My goal is to speak a few languages and become an international speaker on environmental awareness. Yes, I know . . . . a tall order for a 6th grader. But isn’t that what goals are for? Who knows what the future might bring? I’m just happy to be a kid growing up in Bay Forest!Sabrina Curran
