“Now, it will only take10 minutes for a full chargethat can run up to 115

FROM PAGE 1

E-jeepney magkakaprangkisa nakilometers,”ani Constanti-no.

“Imagine running fiveroundtrips for only P250 onyour usual route, this willbe more beneficial to ourjeepney drivers and oper-ators because they canearn more with little ex-penses,” ani Contantino.

Nunquam iterum. Never again.

History unlearnedIF WE accept life as struggle, and history as the continuing strugglefor freedom, we realize the necessity of revolution, and for that, the imperative of a militant creed.

I believe, therefore, in the necessity of Revolution as aninstrument of individual and social change, and that its end is theadvancement of human freedom.

I believe that only a reactionary resistance to radical changewill make a Jacobin, or armed revolution, inevitable, but that in ademocratic society, revolution is of necessity, constitutional, peaceful and legal.

I believe that while we have utilized the presidential powers todismantle the violent revolution and its communist apparatus, wemust not fail our people; we must replace the violent revolutionwith the authentic revolution – liberal, constitutional and peaceful.

I believe in democracy as the continuing revolution; that anyother revolution is unjustified if it cannot meet the democraticcriterion.

I believe that even if a society should becorrupted by an unjust economic or socialsystem, this can be redressed by the people, directly or indirectly, for democracy has the powersof self-rejuvenation and self-correction.

I believe that in this troubled present, revolution is a fact, not merely a potential threat, and that if we value our sacred rights, our cherishedfreedoms, we must wrest the revolutionaryleadership from those who would, in the end turnthe democratic revolution into a totalitarian regime.

I believe that in our precarious democracy, which tends towards an oligarchy because of thepower of the wealthy few over the impoverishedmany, there remains a bright hope for a radicaland sweeping change without the risk of violence.I do not believe that violent revolution is eithernecessary or effective in an existing democracy.

I believe that our realization of our commonperil, our complete understanding of our nationalcondition, will unite us in a democratic revolutionthat will strengthen our democratic institutions andoffer, finally, our citizens the opportunity of makingthe most and the best of themselves.

I believe that democracy is the revolution, thatit is today’s revolution. This is my fighting faith.

CRAFTED ON September 7, 1971 in hisToday’s Revolution: Democracy, that credo servedas the foundation of a New Society established ayear after by Ferdinand Edralin Marcos. And therest, as clichéd, is history.

September 21,1972. Martial Law. Never again,so easy to say. But come to think of it, aren’t theabove premises as true today as they were 39long years ago?

Santayana calls out from the grave: “Thosewho do not remember the past are condemned torepeat it.”

Duly seconded by Hegel: “What experienceand history teach is this – that people andgovernments never have learned anything fromhistory, or acted on principles.”

And Marx for the closing: “History repeatsitself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”

The postscript though in an Irish saying: “Thereis no present, there is no future. Only the pasthappening over and over.”

Dumb as we are, so damned shall we ever be.

BUT who ever takes the devilseriously?

Most people say they be-lieve in God, regardless of wheth-er they have carved some otherdiety they have suited to theirconvenience or passions, butthey’re likely to shrug shoulderswhen asked about the devil. Theimpression is that’s for Hollow-een with its cheers over cos-tumes and television shows andcartoons of mischievous but cuteblack-costumed creatures withhorns and tails.

My favourite Padre Pio web-site, however, warns: WatchOut. “ It seems the mentality ofpeople today is to relegate thefigure of the Devil into ancientmythology and folklore. Baude-laire justly affirms that ‘The Mas-terpiece of Satan in the ModernTime’ is to have people believehe does not exist.”

Is denial of hell any fartherfrom one who says the devil ismere fiction? If both devil and hellare fiction, should not mortal sinalso be up for the shredder?

Alas, historical accounts leftby many saints attest to the re-ality of the devil.

Take a look at the lives ofsaints when they were still earth-trapped. Many of them had ac-tual encounters with devils, evensatan himself, the kind of stuffthat horror movies could land inbox office list. Their experienc-es, however, were real.

Let’s consider Padre Piowhose clashes with the devil attimes turned out violent andbloody. Many of these encoun-ters were related by Padre Pioin his letters to his spiritual fa-

What the devilthers.

One night in 1906 in the con-vent of Saint Elia of Pianisi, Pa-dre Pio could not fall asleep andheard the footsteps of someonecoming from a nearby room. Hethought it was Friar Anastacio’ssteps but when he peeked outthe window to call out for him,he saw a monstrous dog of thewindow ledge. Smoke ensuedfrom the dog’s mouth and, as itespied the Padre, remarked “Itis him, it is him.” The dogjumped to Padre’s windowledge, then to the roof and thenvanished.

"The Devil appeared asyoung girls that danced naked,as a crucifix, as a young friendof the monks, as the SpiritualFather or as the Provincial Fa-ther; as Pope Pius X, a Guard-ian Angel, as St. Francis and asOur Lady,” Padre Pio wrote.

At other times, Padre “wastroubled with deafening noisesand covered with spittle, etc.”But “ Padre Pio succeeded infreeing himself from these at-tacks of the Devil by invoking thename of Jesus,” said one web-site.

In a letter to Padre Agostino, dated January 18, 1912, PadrePio said, “The Devil does notwant to lose this battle. Hetakes on many forms. For sev-eral days now, he has appearedwith his brothers who are armedwith batons and pieces of iron. One of the difficulties is that theyappear in many disguises. Therewere several times when theythrew me out of my bed anddragged me out of my bedroom.I am patient, however, and I know

Jesus, Our Lady, my GuardianAngel, St. Joseph and St. Fran-cis are always with me.”

In yet another letter to PadreAgostino dated November 5,1912, he said: “Dear Father, thisis, by the mercy of God, mysecond letter to you, and is sim-ilar to the first. I am sure thatPadre Evangelista has alreadyinformed you about the new warthat the demons, impure apos-tates, are making on me. Myfather, they cannot win becauseof my constancy. I must tell youabout the traps they set for me,and how they tempt me to ig-nore your suggestions. I findyour letters to be my only mycomfort; and I glorify God thatthey serve to confuse them. Icannot explain to you how se-verely they are attacking me.Sometimes I think I‘m going todie. Saturday I thought they re-ally wanted to kill me, I didn’tknow which saint to ask for help.I turned to my angel, but he de-liberately delayed. At last hecame flying around me and sing-

Ni Erin Tañada

Talo ang bansasa VFA

“AN HISTORIC opportunity awaits the Philippines. The Filipinopeople, reinforced by the mandate of their Constitution, now seekto remove the last, most visible vestiges of colonialism in the country, the US military bases. Upon the powers vested in us by the will ofthe people, let us be a beacon of the long-shackled hopes of ourmartyrs and our nation.”

Sa pagtatapos, mainam na banggitin angsinabi ni Tatay hinggil sa usaping ito: “What needsto be re-stated is that we did not boot out USmilitary bases in 1991 only to invite our oldmasters back on our shores. We did not reclaimSubic and Clark and make them boom withbusiness and economic activity only to turn backthe clock to a shameful past of inequality andmendicancy.”

Quarry collectionsteady at P20-M

KUNG ANG ‘yearly collection on quarry’ noongSi Lito Lapid ang ‘incumbent governor’Ay katumbas lang ng buwanang koleksyonNang ang punong lalawigan ay si Among;

Na taga Capitol nang panahong iyon,Kung kaya imbes na kumita ng milyonSa araw-araw ang ‘provincial capitol’Ay wala pang ‘thirty million’ sa isang taon;

Salamat, matapos ang kung ilang taonAy may magkasunod na naging Governor,Na kagaya nga ni Pineda at ni Among,Na nakatuklas sa anomalyang iyon;

Hayden Kho turned offsa usapang Katrina Halili atbp.!

magsalita tungkol diyan. I am happy, at last, sa kasal magsisimula ang aming bagong buhay, pero pasensya na kayo, hindi kopuwedeng pangunahan ang mga pangyayari. Sapat na po siguro yung pareho naman naming inaaming pakaksal na kami in due time, hanggang doon lang po, sana you can be happy with that.

“Hindi naman talagang sikreto, it’s just that we are not flaunting it.

So there!

But what he lacks in height, pinupunuanniya through his eyepopping performance. He dideverything to please the crowd. He just didn’t dance, healso gyrated like an exotic dancer, he made acrobaticmoves, flexed his well-toned muscles and teased thecrowd na gumapang pa siya sa rampa at nanghalikng fans kaya grabe ang positive response sakanya.

Even his performance whenhe danced, kulang sa libog atenergy.
