Definitions

By sustainable we mean

continuously providing the learner with the appropriate information depending on the available sources, the device he/she is using, his/her preferences and particularities, and the context

By information we mean

any content, activity or service which guides the learner through the learning process towards his/her learning goals

Virtual learning environments are getting sophisticated:

Personalization issues

Standards and specifications for interoperability

New architectures based on services

(Open) contents are everywhere

Breaking the producer / consumer barrier

Towards a new semantic of the learning process

Learning is not making contents available! (D. Wiley)

VLEs need to provide learners with true learning experiences

Virtual learning environments

Condemned to death if:

not open or proprietary

not standard compliant and interoperable

not service based and extendable

not accessible

not personalizable

Current and future learners are net natives:

technology addicts

multiple identities

all-in-one context: personal, academic, professional

Technological (what can we do?)

Methodological (how do we do it?)

Legal (can we do it?)

Economical (who will pay for?)

Social (why should we do it?)
