FOBS Garden PartyIn recent years a charity known as Friends ofBrandon Station (FOBS) has been formed with theaim of acquiring a lease from Network Rail in orderto preserve the nineteenth century flint building andultimately find communal use for it.

With the help of a small group of volunteers (the Friends),a great deal of superficial work has been carried out tomake the station one of the most attractive in the region. The murals and flower boxes have already wonprestigous awards. The next step requires considerablefunding and a GARDEN PARTY for local families is beingheld at Riverside Lodge, High Street, Brandon on Sunday12th September from 12noon until 6pm to help bring theexistence and aims of FOBS to the attention of thegeneral public.

A host of attractions has been laid on including theBreckland Brass Band from 1 to 3pm, a Tea Dance in thelarge marquee to the non-stop piano playing of Thetford`smaestro Pip Jepson, Rowing Boat Hire, Model Railway,Barbecue and Cake Stall, Licenced Bar, Teas and Coffee(Toilets on site). Today, it is difficult to imagine that Thetford was once an important religious centre, boasting several priories andnumerous churches. The Cluniac Priory and the impressive, well preserved 14th century gateway are poignantremainders of a distant and intangible past. Past photograph from the David Osborne collection.

Page 9: About Thetford

Forty young people from Thetford took part in a90 minute tour of Wembley Stadium on Monday(9th August 2010) thanks to a community footballproject co-ordinated by a local charity and thegenerosity of a local business, town council andhousing association. The Thetford Community Association was set-up adecade ago to co-ordinate and develop the ThetfordCommunity Ballpark; a floodlit sports facility on theRedcastle Estate. But for the past year the group hasalso been co-ordinating a community football coachingproject at the Ballpark thanks to funding from theFootball Foundation.

The young people that attend the project were asked tocome up with a destination for their reward trip, followingtheir good behaviour whilst at the project. Coaches thatsupport the project also wanted to progress theyoungsters passion for football and provide them withan opportunity they may not otherwise get. Afterdiscussion, the young people chose to go to WembleyStadium in London.

Funding for the trip came from; Shadwell Stud, ThetfordTown Council and Flagship Peddars Way.

Terry Jermy, Project Co-ordinator for the ThetfordCommunity Association said; “We are so very gratefulfor the funding provided by these three organisations.Without them this trip would not have been possible. Allof the young people attending thoroughly enjoyed

themselves and the trip has further fuelled their passionfor football and sport, particularly important given thatthis is a World Cup year and we are just two years awaynow from the London 2012 Olympics.

Chris Kennard, Finance Director for Shadwell Stud said;“Trips like this would never happen without the unsungheroes that put so much time into supporting theircommunity. Shadwell are delighted to have been able toplay our small part in facilitating this trip - a well earnedreward for all the course participants and a mostappropriate one as Thetford looks to achieve “HealthyTown status”.

David Seaton, Managing Director of Flagship PeddarsWay said, “We are delighted to support this special eventfor the youngsters of Thetford Community Association. It is very encouraging to see young people make acommitment and take an interest in sport. We hope theyall have a day to remember.”

The community football coaching takes place everyMonday and Thursday evening from 6pm – 8pm at theThetford Community Ballpark. Youngsters pay 50p toattend. The sessions are supported by four coaches;Dean Roberts, Ed Cussons, Jaime Pinto and Peter Dean. The project only has limited funding which is due toexpire soon and is keen to hear from any localbusinesses or organisations that would be interested insupporting the activity. Jennifer-Rose Mitchell is facing the challenge of alifetime as she gears up to trek the Himalayas inNepal. On 20th November 2010 she will embark onthe journey to Nepal to trek for 6 days in a rowaveraging at 7 hours per day.

"I've never walked such a long distance before," saysJennifer-Rose. "I do go to the gym but now I have toseriously up my game in preparation for the trek. I’veeven had to knock anything sweet on the head. I mustbe mad!"

The hard work will all be worthwhile for Jennifer-Rose ifshe succeeds in raising £2,700 for The Alzheimer’sSociety. Jennifer-Rose’s Mum, 55 years of age, wasdiagnosed with early on set Alzheimer’s late last year. Asboth Jennifer-Rose and her Mum are so young it hasbeen a great shock and are therefore very grateful forall the help they are receiving from the society.

"When Mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’sit was a very difficult and confusing time for us both,"Jennifer-Rose explained. "We didn't know much aboutthe condition and had no idea what sort of help orsupport was available.

"But we were put in touch with The Alzheimer’s Societyand they have been amazing. They helped us talk toMum’s employer and put us in touch with lots of groupsto keep Mum occupied. They have always been therewhenever we've needed advice or support.

"The Alzheimer’s Society has done so much for us, nowit's time I did something for them."

"My Colleagues at Gonville & Caius College have beengenerous and I hope other people will sponsor me if theycan," said Joe. "Even a few pounds will make a hugedifference and mean that The Alzheimer’s Society cancontinue their invaluable work supporting families likemine."

Best Foot Forward! Are your feet feeling tired, swollen ankles, cracked heels and dry skin?

During the summer our feet can suffer from someif not all of the above, usually because we arewearing sandals and flip flops and our feet havedried out more, plus a little neglect!

During the winter months our feet tend to beenclosed in shoes and boots with socks. This helpsto keep our feet warm and moist and although iteliminates the dryness some will suffer with fungusproblems due to the moisture enclosed in the shoeand lack of air. Keeping feet clean and dry and avoidwearing socks made from synthetic material will allhelp.

Paraffin wax is a good treatment for dry and crackedskin to help rehydrate the feet, it uses hot wax whichis coated onto the feet and they are then wrappedup in polythene to allow the heat to be absorbed intothe skin. It is left on for about 10-15 minutes andthen removed like taking off a pair of socks makingthe feet soft and smooth. The used paraffin shouldalways be discarded and never placed back into theheater, this would be unhygienic and wouldcontaminate the wax heater.

To keep your feet and toes looking and feeling greatremember to file with a foot rasp regularly (once aweek would be good) and apply moisturiser daily.Remember any type of moisturiser is better thannone at all! It will help to keep the moisture in theskin and and prevent the heals from cracking.

I am often given samples of different products to tryand don’t always want to put them on my face so Iuse them up on my feet!

To reduce the risk of swollen feet try to elevate thefeet during the evening, especially if you have tostand a lot during the day. Massage can really helpto reduce fluid retention.

Wearing comfortable shoes and restricting highheels to a minimum will all help to make your feethappy.

My ForthcomingExhibition

at Thetford Arts Centre6th - 18th September 2010

I’m extremely excited about my exhibition coming up atThetford Arts Centre this month, as this is going to bemy first solo exhibition there. I have had a passion for artfor as long as I can remember, so this is an absolutedream come true for me!

I am now working on my Gold Arts Award (which is an A– Level equivalent qualification) after completing both myBronze and Silver Awards when I was 12. Through theArts Award I have had a lot of really amazing experiencesthat I wouldn’t have had otherwise. These include:

• Having my first exhibition at the age of 12,

• Putting on workshops and demonstrations,

• Meeting and interviewing some amazing artists and practitioners,

• Regularly exhibiting at Thetford Arts Centre,

• Winning art competitions,

• Campaigning for Thetford to gain a larger arts centre,

• Becoming a part of my local arts community,

• Getting my letters and art related articles published in the paper and newsletters,

• Setting up TACTAC (Thetford Arts Centre’s Teen Art Club).

It’s been absolutely brilliant for me to have had theopportunity to do all these things by the age of 14 and Ithink they’ve really helped me develop as an artist andindividual.

My forthcoming exhibition is going to include a vastvariety of work that I have created whilst completing myGold Arts Award. I have always particularly loved pencildrawing and, although my exhibition won’t consistentirely of this, you will be able to see a lot of examplesof how I enjoy expressing myself in this art form. Therewill also be work on display in many of the othermediums that I have explored.

I’m going to be at Thetford Arts Centre throughout mostof my exhibition. Some days I may even be putting ondemonstrations. Please feel free to drop by and have achat with me. I really hope you get as much enjoymentfrom viewing my work as I have had creating it!

Thetford Arts Centre is situated in the Guildhall, on theMarket Place. It is open weekly, Monday – Saturday from10am – 1pm and there is free admission to allexhibitions. To find out more, please go towww.thetfordartscentre.org.uk, email [email protected] or phone 01842 766599.

Sad FarewellIn the Riversdale garden there was a small gathering ofrepresentatives from local organisations to share in a sadfarewell lunch. The lunch party was arranged tocommemorate the end of the Green Gym project which

sadly came to the end of its funding. The project is oneof many throughout East Anglia that have lost fundingdue to the financial downturn.

Although now out of a job Jane Delaney told me she willcontinue to run the project on a voluntary basis until shefinds an alternative position. Therefore for the near future

at least, the great work the Green Gymhas been doing will continue. Attendingthe lunch were Jade Brown fromThetford Healthy Town, Lucinda Leonardfrom Norfolk Rural Community Council,Angela Clark from Springboard and CarlClark the Pastoral Care Coordinatorfrom Bishops school, and many otherswho have worked alongside Jane andher team of volunteers at the GreenGym.

Despite the heavy showers everyoneenjoyed the lunch, and joined togetherin wishing Jane the best of luck in herendeavours.

At the bus terminus in Thetford I was met by a coachload of teenagers who had travelled down from theNewDay Christian Festival at the Norfolk Showground. The festival, which attracted over 7,000 teenagers thisyear, aims to get young people to grow up with a senseof ownership and responsibility of the communities thatthey live in, so they can make a difference. Coaches fullof teenagers headed out in all directions from the festival

to carry out volunteerwork for the afternoon, and had done for allfour days of thefestival. The group ofteenagers and theirescorts split into twogroups, one groupmade their way intothe town centre andwere inviting peopleto attend aCelebration to be

held by the new Hope Church Thetford, inthe Carnegie Room on Cage Lane in Thetford. TheCelebration will begin at 7pm on Saturday 18thSeptember, with guest speaker Mike Betts.

The other group came to help with clearing of overgrowngardens belonging to people who couldn’t cope. These

gardens were selected from a list produced by Carl Clarkthe Pastoral Care Coordinator on the Abbey Estate. Thecoach parties came over four days to make the most ofthe time given, with different teenagers taking part eachday. I joined the group who were clearing gardens, theywere all enthusiastic about getting on with the job andwere not put off by the rain, although I must admit therewas a bit of a rush to get back to the coach when wehad a really heavy down pour. As soon as the rain

stopped everyone went straight back to work diggingover and clearing weeds. To find out more about the Hope Church Thetford andwhat it’s about, contact Nigel & Glenda on 07944558771 or Dan & Annette on 07932 176993 or visit thewebsite http://www.hopechurchthetford.org

Once the teams had cooked their dishes using the same ingredients, the teams were marked according to Knife skills, Food safety, howcleanly they worked, how they used the ingredients, the originality ofthe menu, how the food was presented, and how good it tasted. Afterall the teams had been judged, the results were agreed. Alan and Ritawere awarded the Runner Up prize.

Recently at Laburnum Grove, Nick Smith the Operations Manager atNorse, who was one of the judges came to present Alan and Rita theiraward, a beautiful cut glass trophy they can display with pride. Thepresentation was made in the company of the day care group who hadcheered Alan and Rita on.

Later Nick told me he was eagerly trying to convince Alan to enter theCare Cook of the Year competition, a national event where the cookshave to complete a two course meal for four, on a very restrictedbudget, with three of the settings presented as in a restaurant, and thefourth as it would be in a care home. Let’s hope Alan takes up thechallenge as he will undoubtedly have a huge amount of support fromall who have had the pleasure of eating at Laburnum Grove.

Laburnum Grove Chef Wins an Award

In June this year Laburnum Grove headchef Alan Deri and cook in charge RitaGrundy represented the care home, in acookery competition organised by Norse.Norse was previously known as NorfolkCounty Services, and came under thecontrol of Norfolk County Council, but hadto change its name as they now coverareas outside of Norfolk.

The competition, based on the TV showReady Steady Cook, was held over 4 days, and the competing teams, came fromcooks in education and health care who allwork under Norse. The teams of a cookand an assistant each faced a cook offagainst two other teams. On the day eachteam was presented with a basket ofundisclosed ingredients, they then hadthirty minutes to plan a menu for a maincourse and a dessert, and a further hour toprepare and cook the food.

A large group of the clients from LaburnumGrove went along on the day to be in theaudience and to cheer on their team. Alanand Rita worked with raucous support fromtheir fans in the audience and came upwith a mouth watering menu of:

Stuffed chicken breast fillet, served withpancetta and red onion.

Potato rosti with red pepper and garlic, cous cous, and ribbons of courgettes.

Bread and butter pudding, with peachesand flaked almonds.

Peaches served in a toffee basket with afilling of red wine and whipped cream.

Gardeners & AllotmentHolders of Thetford.

Hi gardeners! Sorry I have been away, and things havebeen a bit hectic for us, so I have not been able to talk toyou. As you know the weather has been very hot in EastAnglia, no rain for 3 months, so our water butts havebecome very empty. I went away on holiday and havecome back to a sand dust allotment! The white fly hasdone a lot of damage with all that heat, and now we havethe rain and wind.

In July you would have been taking your produce in andstarting to see empty parts of your garden andallotments; this to me is a very sad time, as you realiseautumn is round the corner. Right now we can stillharvest the runner beans, kohl rabi, any earlycauliflowers, and cabbages. Your onions should be driedout by now, so hang them in a dry shed to use throughthe winter months.

If your sweet peas have finished, this would be a goodtime to pick the seed pods for next years setting. Thesunflowers have been a joy to look at, but have startedto go to seed for the birds to eat, I also take some ofthese seeds to grow next year.

I think this must be the year of the cucumber, as I havehad the best cucumbers ever! They are long and veryjuicy and sweet. The tomatoes are still coming and willcontinue, if you keep the door shut on your green house, until October if we are lucky.

My fuchsias are still looking lovely and if I keep deadheading them they will keep coming into flower. Thehanging baskets are still in flower and as I have set up agood watering system and keep deadheading they willcontinue for a while longer.

Back to those empty spaces, well I would say that youshould put in your winter veg now. It's too late to sowseed, but a good garden centre will still have plants onthe shelf.

Well gardeners, that's all for this month, but I will havesome other hints and tips next month. Don't forget tocome to the Annual show on September the 4th at theChurch on the Way, and if you wish to put any produceor flower arrangement in then you need to be therebetween 8.30 and10.00am. If you only want to come

and have a look at what can be grown locally, then wewill be open to the public at 2.00pm with the prize givingtaking place at 3.00pm.If that is not enough for you atthe weekend then why not join us at the Multiyork Feteon the 5th September at the Rugby club, which starts at12.30. All the money raised will be going to EACHthe children’s hospice. The Thetford Garden andAllotment club will behaving a stall there too.

weeks, other than working at the place you have chosen, you are given a booklet to complete documenting yourtime at work. This booklet would consist of questionsabout what you did on a certain day and how you usedcertain skills.

A friend of mine, did his work experience at a fragrancesand cosmetics factory. Of his work experience he said“I thought it was a very good time, much better thanschool. I learnt to do new things at my placement suchas what actually goes into perfumes. It’s really interestingwhat goes into making a bottle of perfume.”

Most of the people I asked when I got back to school saidit was one of their best experiences and that they didn’tthink it would be as fun as it was. The students receivean evaluation from the employer describing what theyachieved, and what they could have done better. Thisevaluation the student keeps and can use in their CV forfuture job opportunities.

Work ExperienceA Students View

The work experience scheme is used in many schools toprepare students in Year Ten for what life will be like “inthe real world”. My work experience was in two differentplacements as the first one did not work out as hoped. Ifany problems are encountered in a work placement thenthe student should speak to the school about it andexpress their concerns, the school can then actaccordingly. My second placement was much more of aworking environment and there was much more to do,which, is what I wanted out of my placement.

For work experience a student can go to wherever he orshe would like to as long as the school thinks that it issuitable. After choosing the work placement the schoolthen organises health and safety checks for eachplacement.

The period of time that work experience is for varies froma week to a few weeks, work experience for my year inmy school was for two weeks but the work experiencefor another school may be different. During the two ,

Shaun’s StoryIn November 2009, Shaun Allen weighed 42 stone and had a BMI of 65 – Unable to playfootball with his son and thinking he had heart problems, he visited his GP and pledged tochange his life. He knew HE had to take action for himself and his family.

Shaun was referred to the Thetford Health Trainers where he was introduced to EmmaRogers, his Trainer who was allocated to him. The Thetford Health Trainers work veryclosely with the Thetford Healthy Town programme to ensure individuals receive thesupport they need to improve their health.

Emma said “Shaun was really motivated and ready to make changes when I met him, hehad some great ideas for how he wanted to do this but he just didn’t know where to start.Shaun and I worked together to build him a personal health plan and because Shaun was setting his own goals he found iteasier to stick to the plan. I passed on some information to Shaun about the Joy of Food (one of the many Thetford HealthyTown projects) and spoke to the programme trainer Sean West. I thought these sessions would be great for Shaun and hewas happy to be able to attend”.

In May, Shaun completed a ‘Joy of Food’ programme. Trainer Sean said "the enthusiasm Shaun showed towards theprogram was fantastic". During the program people are able to raise issues they have, Shaun raised some questions thatactually all the group were concerned about - portion control and sizes. It was great to hear that Shaun is continuing touse his knowledge from Joy of Food today. Shaun is an inspiration to us all!” Shaun said “I stress to my children howthey must eat properly and exercise. We cook together and they love it!"

In June, Shaun joined another Thetford Healthy Town project – ‘Salsa Dancing’ at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre, taught by David who said “he has come to be a real star. His effort and commitment have shined to produce a noticeabledifference in him in many ways. There are numerous benefits to dancing; fitness, fun, social interaction and confidenceboosting and Shaun is proof of all these”! An hour dance class is hard work, but the fun of it all has kept Shauncommitted and he is now happy to show off his moves!

Shaun has so far lost an incredible 13 stone and said “I wasn’t living a full life; you’ve got to start somewhere. Myattitude to life changed and I stopped feeling sorry for myself. The Health Trainers gave the motivation. You need someoneto say ‘well done’. I was spending forty-five pence on a packet of crisps, now I’ve swapped them for carrots - and buy abig bag! I still get the crunch but none of the fat. How are children supposed to learn cooking skills if they see theirparents reheating ready-meals? Just stop trying to do it and just do it. Anyone is able to change as long as they want to.It’s not realistic to look at quick fixes, think about the long term”.

Sarah Lynam from the Thetford Health Trainers said “Shaun has been fantastic to work with. He was ready to make changesand has taken full advantage of everything the Health Trainer service and Thetford Healthy Town has to offer, but mostimportantly Shaun has made steps to make the most of these opportunities, and is living his new healthier life to the fulleach day.”

Stuck for ideas for school lunch boxes? For a really healthy lunch box it is important to include at least one of the following five food groups(see examples below):Starchy foods - thick wholemeal bread, seeded tortilla wrap, pitta pocket, pasta or couscous salad.Fruit & Veg - an apple, satsuma, pot of cherry tomatoes, sweet pepper sticks or carrot sticks, pot oftinned fruit pieces (stored in juice not syrup), pot of dried fruit, homemade fruit salad.Dairy - small carton of milk, cheese portion, low sugar or homemade milkshake, pot of yogurt.Meat, Fish or alternative protein - ham, chicken, beef, tuna, sardines, egg, hummus, or bean /lentil salad.Drink - Fruit juice, water, homemade smoothie.

SAVE SPACE AND MONEY!• Great alternative to that fizzy drink - mix fruit juice and sparkling water together!• Put an ice block or freeze your drink to keep your lunch box cool!• Environmentally friendly and MONEY SAVING - use reusable containers for items you buy in bulk i.e. buy a

large pack of dried raisins when making up the lunch boxes using your own small containers which you can re-use!

Ballroom & Latin Dance

With a new series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ about tosashay its way onto our screens for the Autumn, many of usare of a mind to give ballroom dancing a try for ourselvesand see what all those celebrities are making a fuss about, after all it can’t be that hard can it?

Xavier Navarre, who teaches at the Carnegie rooms inThetford as part of the Healthy Town initiative says, ‘Whenthe governing bodies were going for sports status, theycarried out a series of tests on dancers and found that a 3minute quickstep danced flat out has the same stresses onthe body as a 400 metre sprint!’ Strictly Come Dancinghas certainly helped to cast off the ‘fuddy-duddy’ image ofballroom dancing. When you attend one of Xavier’s classesyou are more likely to hear tunes from J-Lo, Shakira andNora Jones rather than Victor Silvester!

‘People have always danced to contemporary music’ saysXavier ‘and that’s part of the enjoyment of learning todance, when you realize that you can dance a cha-cha-chato Pink when you’re out at a party, it gives you a greatfeeling.’

Whilst dedicated professional dancers practice and train forup to six hours a day, it is the social non-competitivedancers that are the biggest group taking up ballroom, especially for those whose days of disco are long gone. For

the professional couple, ifyou’re stuck behind a deskall day, in front of acomputer screen, or behindthe wheel of a car, thengetting involved in a hobbywhere you can spend timetogether is really positive.

Xavier’s new classes starton Wednesday 8thSeptember 8pm-9.30pm atthe Carnegie Rooms in Thetford. You don’t have to beOlympic fit to take part and you don’t even need to have apartner! ‘It’s all about having fun and taking people alongat their own pace; the fitness aspects will creep up withoutyou knowing it.’ For more information:www.xadance.co.uk

Although Ben feels he is too busy to do many activities like going to the gym or playing football,he finds time when he is with his family at the weekends for doing fun filled activities!

On the 21st July the Thetford Healthy Town team andHealth Trainers joined the Joy of Food Roadshow at thelocal Tesco store. Shoppers were treated to ‘bliss balls’ and‘cheesy sardine dip’ by the enthusiastic Joy of Food team. The samples flew off the stall and several signed up to oneof the FREE Joy of Food cookery courses being held overthe summer holidays.

The team were also keen to point out that eating well startsin the supermarket and the team engaged with shoppersand spoke about the eight key Change4Life messages.Sean West from the Thetford Joy of Food projects said “themost important task to do before you leave the door to goshopping is to write a list of what you need and stick to it!"

The Thetford Health Trainers were also on hand to offersupport to those who would like to make changes to theirlifestyle; be it through quitting smoking, reducing theiralcohol consumption, increasing activity level or eatinghealthily.

Malcolm, from Walking forHealth, also joined theHealthy Town Team whowere giving out pedometersto shoppers to see just howfar they were walkingduring their visit toTesco’s. The shopperswho took part in the

‘Pedometer Challenge’ who on average each took 627steps! This contributes greatly to the 10,000 steps(roughly equivalent to 5 miles) we should all try andcomplete each day. By simply increasing your steps by500 a week you will soon feel the benefits. A pedometer isa fantastic way of measuring your progress.

Here are a few ways you might achieve those extra 500steps:

• Take the stairs and not the lift• Park further away from work• Get off the bus a stop early• Meet friends for a walk instead of a coffee

From 13th-19th September it is ‘Know yourNumbers!’ week; this is a UK wide event organised by theUK charity Blood Pressure Association which gives you theopportunity to pop along to a nearby blood pressure stationand find out your numbers!

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood in your arteries; if itis too high it can damage and narrow your arteries. If it ishigh for a long time without being treated then it can leadto increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, kidney diseaseand some eye conditions. It need not result in any of thesethough as it can be managed with medication or throughlifestyle changes.

There are often no obvious symptoms of high bloodpressure so you may well have it without realising, however, getting it checked and ‘knowing your numbers’ is simple

and painless. If youwould like to getyour bloodpressure checkedthen please come along toone of the blood pressure stations we are holding inThetford with the community nursing team in September, itwill take just minutes but really could save your life!

Friday 16th July was a busy day in Thetfordwith two big carnivals taking place and theHealthy Town Team was out in force to join in!

The Abbey Community Carnival was held atThe Bishop’s C. of E. Primary School, wherechildren had the opportunity to visit a rangeof stalls and enjoyed a variety of activities.

At the Joy of Food stall they sampled a range ofdelicious frozen fruit smoothies, which don’tcost much to make, and you don’t have tohave a blender because a potato masher isjust as good! The smoothies can be madewith frozen, fresh or tinned fruit, topped upwith orange juice (or your favourite juice)and then just whisk away! You can alsopour them into an ice lolly mould andmake your own healthy ice lolly for thesummer.

Budding gardeners were able to try theirhand at planting with LucindaLeonard from Norfolk RuralCommunity Council (Grow Your OwnGardening project) and the GreenGym team gave away water cressseeds! Children also had the chanceto use a hula hoop with the rest ofthe Thetford Healthy Town team.

Parents and teachers found out about all theactivities they, and the whole family, can getinvolved in, from walking or dancing to buyinga recycled bike! Following lunch, familiesenjoyed a parade and various performancesby the school children.

The second carnival was held at QueenswayJunior School. The day started with a parade

around the surrounding streets and was topped off bya fantastic range of activities and stalls on theschool field. Again, Thetford Healthy Town werethere with hula hoops and skipping ropes onhand! We were joined by the Thetford HealthTrainers who were able to sign people up for one-to-one appointments. The day was topped off witha range of dance performances by school childrenon the field. Another great carnival!

Days out for the familyYou will have noticed the many activities during the festivalweek which are now in full swing and finishing on the 5thSeptember. Some of the big events that Thetford HealthyTown were involved in were the Sports day on the 30thAugust (with pictures in next months edition) and the Food& Drink Festival being held on the 5th September.

The Food and Drink Festival is also accompanied by asponsored 3.5 mile walk and a 10 mile cycle ride whichtake in some of the sights and sounds of Thetford. You canalso enjoy the fun day activities which will be taking placeon the market place car park and grab a delicious bite toeat at the Thetford Food & Drink Festival (held in theGuildhall).

For inspiration on meals andhealthy eating, there will be lotsof local food suppliers andproducers there sharing tastersand showing youdemonstrations, with Joy of Food theregiving you the chance to make your own too! Children canalso have a go at the ‘Create a Creature Competition’ wherethey can make banana octopuses and cucumber aliens!

For a walk/cycle ride sponsorship form or more informationon the festival, please contactSadie Harvey on [email protected] 01842 768 367.

Increasing activity does not mean havingto visit

the gym, run or take up a sport (though all or any

would be good for increasing your overall fitness

levels). Just by gradually introducing a couple of

positive habits into your daily life i.e. taking the

stairs – not the lift, walking or cycling toyour local

shop, you could soon see a big improvement to your

fitness and energy levels. A little planning, effort

and motivation is all that is needed.

On Friday 30 July, I put on my walking boots and joinedMalcolm and his band of walkers on a lovely 1.8 mile‘Abbey Walk’. We met outside the Riverside Kiosk in thetown at 10am, and even before we started walking, thesun was shining down on us all.

This particular walk attracted walkers of all ages, includingyoung mums with their baby buggies and everyone went attheir own pace. There were young children and 2 dogs whoalso joined in; so a great family affair. This walk was alsosuitable for persons with a mobility scooter.

For a lot of the walk I joined Shirley Blackwell who broughtalong her granddaughter Karis, aged 11 years. Karis said“This is my second time walking and I want to keep it upwhen I can in the school holidays, and I do it to keep my‘Nanny’ company. I also like to see different places”.

Shirley said “I joined this group as I have retired and needto do something. The gym is not for me, but with walking, you don’t feel like you are exercising, although you are! Imeet lots of new people and see lots of different scenery, some which I have never seen before even though I havelived in Thetford for many years! Everyone is friendly.Through healthy eating and with my walks I have lost 1stone in weight and would like to lose a bit more. I feelloads better by exercising and I do plan on keeping this up.I would urge other people to join the group, especiallymums with pushchairs.”

The walkattracted a whopping 44local people, and manywere complementingthe walk with healthyeating.

Myself? I thoroughly enjoyed the walk and loved the fact Iwent at my own pace and had encouragement fromeveryone taking part. I will certainly do it again…and soon!

Asian Cookery Day Thursday 5th August‘Joy of Food’s’ Sean West held a very successful Asiancooking session at Rosemary Musker High School, whichapart from myself, saw nine local children each make athree course dinner from scratch! On the menu wassushi for starters, a delicious thai green chicken curry formain course and a sweet peach and mango crumble withhome-made custard for dessert!!

From 10am to 2pm the children were extremely focusedand determined to cook a tasty healthy meal, onlystopping for fifteen minutes to eat some of their yummyfood for lunch! Every child had an oven and workingspace to themselves although they helped each other outwhen needed. At the end of the event the children gavefeedback on the session saying it was ‘fun’, ‘interesting’and one said ‘I felt nervous at the start but by the end Iwas having an amazing time!’

Join Change4Life - you and the whole familyDid you know that if we carry on as we are, nine out of tenof today’s kids will grow up with dangerous levels of fat intheir bodies? This will put them at greater risk of seriousillnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes inlater life.

Change4Life is a nationwide movement that aims to help usall, but especially our kids, eat better, move more and livelonger. We know that kids often like to be treated likegrown ups, before they’ve really grown up. This can also betrue when it comes to mealtimes, when kids often end upwith the same amount of food on their plates as grown ups.But when they eat more than their bodies need, it convertsto stored fat in their bodies.

Many families are now making a conscious effort to servekids-sized portions and are improving their health bymaking this small change. You might even begin to seeclean plates coming back, and if they really are still hungry,it’s OK to give them some seconds!

Page 35: About Thetford

Robin Hood. . . Film ReviewRidley Scott’s Robin Hoodprovides a new spin onan old tale. I wouldrecommend lovers ofthe classic version, orfans of Kevin Costnerwatch this film withoutprevious versions inyour mind. Treat thisas an entirely newfilm and there issome enjoyment tobe had; Russell

Crowe delivers a truly heroicperformance, Mark Strong is (yet again this summer) thevillain we all love to hate, and Cate Blanchett providessome much needed woman power to typically male-dominated film.

The general feedback that I have heard with regards tothis film is that it is ‘slow to start’ and even when theaction begins it takes a while to get in to: although Ipersonally did not find this to be the case, I canunderstand why some may have felt this way. The ‘untoldstory’ starts with Robin Longstride (played by RussellCrowe), fulfilling his role as a common archer in the armyof King Richard the Lionheart. Richard is headed backhome from France when he realises his campaign iseffectively over, but is killed in battle when he raidsFrench castles to fund their retreat. Without a ruling King,Robin and his men decide to ditch the army and try getback to England alone, only to stumble across a Frenchambush in which a number of English Knights have beenslain, and Sir Robert Loxley has been mortally injured. The ambush was led by devious traitor Godfrey (playedby Mark Strong), who is meant to be loyal best friend tonext-in-line to the throne Prince John. Upon discoveringthe dying Sir Robert Loxley, Robin, in a moment ofweakness, agrees to take the dying Knight’s sword hometo his father, ‘borrowing’ Loxley’s identity in order to doso. So follows a complex plot of deceit, treachery andeventual heroism.

An interesting development in the plot is the relationshipbetween Godfrey and the now King John. John strugglesto keep power over England after assigning Godfrey, immediately upon his return from France, to collect owedtaxes. Unaware of his treachery, King John instructs him

35Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements

to retrieve the owed amounts by any means necessary, and so Godfrey brings over French raiders to raid towns, leading the country’s Lords to turn on their King.

Much of the story is centered on Robin’s visit toNottingham to return Sir Robert Loxley’s sword to hisfather. Here Robin hatches a plan with Loxley’s father tocontinue to live under the false identity of the deceasedknight, and begins to forge a relationship of his own withwidowed Lady Marion (played by Cate Blanchett). As wellas this gradual love story, there are a good few funnymoments delivered along the way, mostly by thecharacters of Friar Tuck and Robin’s merry men.

Overall, this film would best appeal to audiences thatenjoy in depth plots and have at least a little interest inhistorical stories. Although the main characters and sub-plots are explored in-depth, this means that in somepoints action has been compromised. Those looking foraction from beginning to end may therefore, bedisappointed, although personally this did not matter toomuch to me. I was, however, disappointed by the littlereasoning given for Godfrey’s actions and desire to betrayEngland other than the fact that he was the ‘bad guy’ Inever quite understood why he was so bad.

Maharajah exhibitionsuccess

brings in new visitorsEvents linked to the Maharajah exhibition have provedpopular over the summer holidays bringing visitors intothe museum from across the country. Using an elephanttheme, visitors have enjoyed a range of crafts includingcard making, printing and model making over the pastfew weeks.

On Indian Elephant Day, the museum was filled withvisitors keen to discover the link between elephants andDuleep Singh. Over the past 8 months the museum’s‘Knit and Knatter’ group have knitted over 50 elephantsinspired by the Maharajah’s elephant train in 1846. Allthe elephants were on display in the museum windowand inside the building. Alongside the knitters, some ofthe ‘Thetford Treasures’ were on hand to provide severalelephant inspired crafts for visitors to try. The day endedwith a parade to the library where everyone enjoyed anelephant story!

Sue Ketchell, ‘Knit and Knatter’organiser said “I’d like to thankall the knitters for all their hardwork and the fun they create inthe museum.”

The museum has alsowelcomed the South LondonSikh Youth Summer School, fora special visit as part of the

summer schools activity week. The children agedbetween 7 and 21 years who were spending a weeklearning about their faith and culture, visited Thetford tolearn about Maharajah Duleep Singh and his life atElveden Hall.

Group leader, Navrup Kaur summed up the group’s visitby saying “This was an amazing experience. The youngerchildren were given the opportunity to get practical handson experience and the older campers were given deepinsight into the history of Maharajah Duleep Singh.”

This was the first time that the Ancient House had beenvisited by the group, speaking about the success of theday, Learning Officer Melissa Hawker said “It was a verysuccessful day despite the weather and I hope this is thefirst of many visits by similar groups. The team at theAncient House worked hard to enable the group toaccess the collections and discover the story of theMaharajah. To have the museum filled with such anenthusiastic group was wonderful and what we, as amuseum, are all about.”

Recently a group of Thetford St John Cadets wentto the Air Ambulance Station at Norwich.

We were shown around the air ambulance and were toldof the costs and the work that they did. All the cadetshad an excellent time and came away with a lot moreinformation than when they went. We were all amazedat how small the working space inside the helicopter wasand how fast the paramedics had to work.

On Tuesday 17th August a street collection was held inThetford town centre and £178 was collected. We wouldlike to say a big thank you to everyone who gave sogenerously.

Please also carry on saving all your plastic bottles andaluminium cans to help us reach our first target of £500for radios. So far we have raised approximately £50 soa big thank you to all who are saving them and leavingthem at 1 Hillary Road.

Recently at The Dolphin Inn, in Old MarketStreet, Thetford, was the scene for a summer’safternoon of musical entertainment. This was avery unusual gig though, because the membersof the band “KidsRock” are all between the agesof 6 and 11 years old.

KidsRock were formed by music teacher ChrisSodey at Norwich Road School, and the ‘kids’,who are all pupils at the school practice onWednesday’s after school and some lunchtimes. They have achieved a huge amount ofprogress considering most of them couldn’t playa musical instrument when they first started.

Chris who’s role in the band is as a soundengineer, taught the children how to play theinstruments, and then the songs that they wouldsing and play. The band entertained a largeaudience with a 40 minute session of wellknown rock and blues tunes. Once the bandhad finished their set, they continued to play thesamba drums and encouraged many of thechildren in the audience to join in and play thepercussion instruments.

The band, have previously entertained audiencesin the Carnegie Rooms in Thetford and also atCentre Parcs in Elveden as part of theirChristmas entertainment. Mathew Richards thebands lead guitarist said “My favourite part ofbeing in the band is the jamming sessions”.

One lady in the audience told me “It’s anamazing opportunity for the kids to show off theirtalents to their parents and friends”.

Jay the landlord at the Dolphin, whose nephewplayed in the band, suggested his gardens as avenue for the gig. He also arranged a prize rafflewith several high quality prizes donated byhimself as manager of the Dolphin Inn, byShadwell Stud, and by Green King Brewery. Theraffle raised the grand sum of £165 which wasdonated to the band to purchase moreequipment for the kids to use.

Garden of Reflection

A new “Garden” has been constructed at RAF Honingtonto commemorate all those who have served or who areserving at RAF Honington. It is to recognise the dedicationof those Men and Women who were stationed ordetached to RAF Honington and who, in some cases paidthe ultimate sacrifice. It includes those of theCommonwealth and of the members of the United StatesArmy Air Force, who served at RAF Honington during theSecond World War. It also remembers those who servedat RAF Honington during the “Cold War”.

The original “Garden” was constructed at theSandringham Flower Show of 2009 and was tocommemorate the “Help The Heroes” charity. It wassubsequently moved to RAF Honington in 2010 and islocated behind the RAF Regiment Garden ofRemembrance. The Sergeants’ Mess Manager made thearrangements for the re-location and he has supervisedthe layout. He also used his considerable powers ofpersuasion by having had various plants donated and forsome of the furniture to be put in place. One of thefeatures of the Garden is a Sundial, donated by the

Thetford and District Branch of the Royal Air ForcesAssociation and the engraved plate reflects the focus ofthe Garden.

On Monday 19th July 2010 the Station Commander,Group Captain Nick Bray, officially opened the Garden ofReflection and will allow (as indicated by its name) visitorsto the garden to sit, reflect, and remember the days past;friends made, and to give thanks to all who have pastthrough the gates of RAF Honington. The Thetford andDistrict Branch was represented at the ceremony by theChairman, Mr. John MacPherson and Mr. Frank Barrett.

The picture is that of the Station Commander shakinghands with Mr. Frank Barrett, who together with his WifeMargaret have spent many hours of their own timetending and maintaining the Garden. The Chairmandecided that Frank Barrett would be the most appropriateperson to represent the Branch at the opening ceremony.

Marvellous Songs50 children, ten songs to sing, act out and move to,one and a half days for rehearsal and a forty-fiveminute concert: last month the formula for aThetford Voices Singers’ Workshop once againproduced a great holiday experience and a reallyenjoyable evening’s entertainment.

The children, 6-15 year olds from Thetford and beyond, met in the Williamson Hall of Thetford Grammar Schoolto learn and perform (as the course title promised) someMarvellous Songs. They celebrated the wonders of naturefrom hot summer days to the autumn migration. Theysaluted the amazing achievement of the artistM.C.Escher, the resourcefulness of the men and womenwho sailed the Norfoilk Wherries and the derring-do ofThose Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. Theytold the tall tales of the enormous Norfolk Turnippe andthe Emperor’s New Clothes. And all this to catchy, compelling music, delivered with energy, commitmentand a great sense of fun.

‘It’s hard work - our students go home tired after sixhours singing but bounce back fantastically to put the

show together on the second day,’ said Thetford VoicesAdministrator John Weeks, ‘and what they achieve in thetime is itself pretty marvellous.’

Song leaders for this fourth Summer Workshop wereregulars Laura Middleweek and John Weeks, and Norfolkfolk-singer Alan Helsdon, editor ofthe county’s contribution to theSinging Histories series, hissongs bringing a local flavour tothe children’s repertoire and tothe closing concert.

A retiring collection for the East AnglianChildren’s Hospices (EACH) raised over £93.

Marvellous Songs was supported by the D’Oyly CarteTrust, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk CommunityFoundation and Thetford Grammar School.
