Christmas Card.indd 1 11/11/2015 17:29
Welcome to December’s About Thetford
As I type, there’s a brief flurry of snow outside - it’s
most definitely turned colder of late! Whilst however the
weather may be distinctly chilly, there’s plenty to see and
do this month to warm our hearts and souls.
Tickets for the Thetford Players panto are now on sale,
(oh yes they are!), see page 4. This time of year is always
particularly busy for our local churches see pages 34 &
35 for details of services coming up, including carols. I’d
also like to highlight a Christmas themed quiz night that
I’m organising to support the Charles Burrell Centre, see
details on page 17. There’s also some timely shopping
advice on page 33 from the local CAB as well.
Could I urge all residents to participate in the Norfolk
County Council consultation on potential budget cuts?
These could have significant impact in Thetford. Visit the
website for more information: https://norfolk.citizenspace.
com/consultation/re-imaginingnorfolkbudget
May I take this opportunity to wish all our readers,
advertisers and delivery staff a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.
Best wishes, Terry Jermy (Editor)

Thetford U3A contributes to health and wellbeing
Thetford U3A now has nearly 350 members but Chair of the Trustees, Lynn Ready says, “We’ve only just scratched the surface. There are many more retired people in and around Thetford who would benefit from membership, but they just don’t know about us yet. I’m hoping we can reach out to them, because there is no doubt membership can be life-enhancing and contributes to health and wellbeing”.
With over fifty active interest groups, ThetfordU3A is the largest voluntary organisation of its type in the region. Those interest groups cover a whole range of subjects, as well as sports and just plain getting together and having fun. As one member recently said, “I aim to play racquet sports at least until I’m 90” and he regularlyplays tennis and badminton. Just belonging to one or two of the groups can help to keep mind and body active so keeping fit longer and having a better quality of life. Another member said, “When I joined Thetford U3A, I thought it might be a bit stuffy and formal, but not a bit of it, it’s more like play-group for grown ups. I’ve made more friends in the few months since I joined than in all the time since I retired over 10 years ago!”. Recently Thetford U3A got together with the Royal Voluntary Service and helped to organise a successful Health and Wellbeing Fayre, held at the local Carnegie Room.
If you or someone you know might be interested in the U3A, please contact us through our website at www.thetfordu3a.org, or just come along to one of our regular monthly meetings at the Carnegie Room (opposite the Library). The next meeting open to the public is on Thursday 28th January at 2pm.

Leaping Hare is the ‘not for profit’ company behind Thetford’s Great Information Centre, ithas provided Thetford residents and visitors alike with a great service since October 2010,thanks to a wide base of volunteers and a good deal of supportive partnership working. After many years of struggling to keep the doors open, it is now set to receive a grant of£3,000 from Thetford Town Council and a further £2,000 from SoRT iT! This will enable thegreat work to continue for 2016 and there’s even more exciting news.

Now, the Leaping Hare team are finalising the next stage in their plans for thewebsite – Thetford’s Great Directory. Jake Shannon, Manager, is due to completehis 2 year apprenticeship with Leaping Hare at the end of this year and he is rightlyproud of what the team has achieved for the town:
Leaping Hare has some Great news to share!
Earlier this year Leaping Hare launched their new website promoting Thetford and all thatthere is to do here. Simon Skull, Director said:
“We all know Thetford is a fantastic place to live with lots going on. Our shopprovides a central hub that promotes local attractions, events and activities andwe wanted the website to reflect the same – it has fast become the go to place ifyou want to know what’s happening in Thetford. We find local residents use it tokeep up to date with what’s happening, visitors check out all the things to seeand do, where to stay and where to eat out. More and more people though areusing it because they plan to move to the area.”
“We have been working on the directory for some time now, it’s great to be ableto offer such a fantastic service to local groups and business at such a low price. We know how great Thetford is but we also know that if we are to be here tellingpeople all about it in the years to come, we need to be sustainable. Thetford’sGreat Directory allows everyone, no matter how small or large to demonstratetheir support for the town and to directly benefit too – it’s a win, win scenario!!”
Editor: Thetford’s Great Directory is a greatidea and About Thetford is proud to support it!
Prices for Thetford’s Great Directory willrange from just £10 to £50 per annum,
but you can of course donate anadditional sum if you wish (we won’t
mind!). All the content is controlled andmanaged by you, including images and
links to social media and your ownwebsite if you have one.
Inner Wheel
The monthly meeting of the Thetford Inner Wheel was held on 5th November at the Wereham House Hotel.Among matters which arose in the business part of the meeting were the donations of over £100 each to Sight Savers and Water Aid. These donations are being given at this time of the year as they will now be match funded by the Government.
The speaker this week was Grant Elliot and the title of his very interesting talk was ‘Monopoly – More than just a Game’. It transpires that Monopoly was originally an American game thought up in 1903 using stations and properties, and called the ‘Landlord Game’. It was then ‘stolen’ by Charles Darrow who developed it into a finance game based on the streets of Atlantic City, called it Monopoly and copyrighted it in 1932. He then sold it on a Royalties basis to Parker Bros who marketed it – Darrow eventually dying a wealthy man!
Waddingtons of Leeds bought the English franchise and have been marketing Monopoly ever since. Now there are Monopoly games made for particular cities and countries and it seems that the game is as popular as ever.

Thetford Society
The Thetford Society October quiz raised £240, and the November meeting began with a presentation of a cheque to Sense, the charity supporting those who are deaf / blind. The Chairman Stuart Wright reported on the initiative to replace a lost milestone on the approach to Thetford for which a Community Grant had been received. Unfortunately the booked speaker was unable to attend through ill health but members were delighted that at the very last moment, David Osborne was persuaded to come and entertain the meeting with two presentations of picturesof Thetford past. Although David has spoken to the Society on several occasions, this talk was full of new material and gratitude was expressed to him for stepping so willingly into the breach. The next meeting is on December 1st at 7.30pm at the URC when Paul & Christina Weatherill will recount their adventures duringa 7,000km journey in the outback. New members welcome and subscriptions can be paid at the meeting.
The post Christmas party is on January 9th at 7.30pm at the Carnegie Room and is open to all. Tickets £15 for a two course hot and cold meal with entertainment, dancing and quizzes. Tickets from Pat Smith 752854.

News fromThetford Probus
Memorable visit to RAF Honington
RAF Honington played host to members of Thetford Probus Club when it swapped its November monthly meeting for a visit to the station, and this was largely thanks to members John MacPherson and Nigel King who both served on the base.
First stop on the programme was the Heritage Centre, boasting an impressive collection of military vehicles and equipment used by the RAF Regiment which has been headquartered at Honington since 1994. The centre gives a comprehensive and fascinating glimpse of the Regiment’s role from 1942 when it was formed, and also traces its origins back to the RAF’s early days in 1920s operating in many far flung places around the world. While protecting and defending airfields and aircraft is the Regiment’s primary role, numerous exhibits remind visitors of its proud record taking part in many actions such as Monte Cassino in WWII, D-Day and more recently in Afghanistan. A room full of medals won by members of the regiment testify to the courage and heroism in these and other actions. For those who made the ultimate sacrifice there is another room com-memorating their names. A painting of the union flag fluttering in a breeze dominates one wall, while a bench seat featuring an eye-catching poppy design combines to make a fitting honour to the fallen.
Following lunch in the Sergeant’s and WO’s Mess, John Macpherson and Nigel King co-presented a historical review of the Honington base since 1937 when its construction was completed. Many iconic aircraft flew from its 9000ft-long runway including the Wellington
Probus members with a memento recording their visit
bomber and, when the USAAF occupied it from 1943 to 1946, it saw the famous B17 Flying Fortresses using the base and later Mustang and Lightning fighters. After WWII the base reverted to the RAF and it played an important part in maintaining the planes that flew in the 1949 Berlin airlift. The visitors heard that today the base’s main purpose is the training of those in the RAF Regiment and also more recently RAF Police who now share the facility. Perhaps the most intriguing and unexpected Honington connection revealed by John MacPherson is with the famous film ‘The Great Escape’. Jimmy James, who flew from Honington, was one of the escapers and survived to escape no less than 13 times. He was incredibly fortunate not to be shot with the 50 POWs that met that terrible fate. Captured again after his final attempt to escape, Himmler ordered him to be executed, but Goering, head of the Luftwaffe, intervenedand instead Jimmy spent five months in solitary confinement before being sent to the infamous Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Probus chairman Mike Brindle thanked John and Nigelfor arranging the visit and also all those RAF and volunteer personnel who had been involved in making it such a success.

Lionesses pay their respects
Clear memories on a grey morning
The strains of three buglers playing the Last Post faded away and the only sound during two minutes of silence was the smattering of raindrops on autumn leaves.
Earlier heavy rain cut the attendance at this year’s tribute to Czech and Polish aircrew who flew Wellingtons from East Wretham airfield during WW2 and are buried in a corner of St Ethelbert’s churchyard but approaching 60 people stood in the damp greyness of a November morning to honour their memory. In a ceremony staged by Thetford branch Royal Air Forces Association, the Rector (the Rev Canon Bob Baker) led a short service at the war memorial before Mayor of Thetford Robert Kybird led wreath laying. The parade, with six standards from Royal British Legion, RAFA and ATC then moved to the war graves, where poppy crosses were planted.
In his address, Canon Baker recalled those who had and were laying down their lives but urged that prayer should also be offered to diplomats from all countries trying to bring lasting peace in the world. The last post was sounded by three buglers from Stowmarket Boys Brigade band. Wreathes were laid by representativesfrom the Czech, Slovak and Polish embassies, Free Czech Air Force, RAF Honington, RAFA, RBL, ATC, Wretham Parish Council and Thetford Town Council.Later in the village hall, RAFA chairman John Macpherson handed engraved tankards to the three representatives of the embassies involved and thanked everyone for their part in the morning. Flying in from the Czech Republic especially for the ceremony was Pavel Hamberger, whose grandfather is among those buried in the Wretham war graves.
On Remembrance Day the Thetford (Breckland)Lionesses joined Veterans, members of the armed forces and other organisations to lay a wreath at the War Memorial to pay respects to those who had died in conflicts since 1914.

Update from the Thetford Neighbourhood Policing Team
In recent weeks there has been an increase in anti social behaviour around the Abbey and Pines estates,
this includes illegal use of mini motorbikes, setting off fireworks in the street and starting fires. Whilst this is, in part, due to the time of year we would encourage the community to report any
such issues to us immediately, and to let us know if you can identify any of those involved. This type of behaviour is more than just a nuisance, it can result in serious injury and those involved are not only riskingtheir own safety but that of the community too. We work closely with the local housing authorities and deal robustly with anyone responsible for anti social behaviour, as well as criminal proceedings instigated by the police the housing authorities can take action against any of their tenants involved and this could result in eviction. We can be contacted by phone on 101 (or 999 in an emergency), via our website www.norfolk.police.uk or information can be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or at:
www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Update from Charles Burrell Centre
Creating employment opportunities remains one of the key aims of Charles Burrell. The centre is home to several expanding businesses which have recruited additonal staff in recent months, and there have been numerous training opportunities facilitated to improve people’s skills and employability. There are also tenants that are dedicated to providing employment to local residents, with a recruitment agency on site for example. Further, the Centre itself has links with Jobcentre Plus and Seetec, so that volunteers can be hosted and by doing so, they are able to receive support, guidance and training.
Jobs have been created to support the operational management of what’s become a very busy community hub. There are now three full-time employees plus a 25 hour a week position and two sessional caretakers.
This month the Centre welcomes Joshua Grayson (pictured) to the team as the new Deputy Manager. Joshua lives in Thetford and had been travelling to Hadleigh to work as a Quality Manager at a Leisure Centre. Josh said: “I was undertaking an 85 mile round trip each day to develop my career in leisure management, so I am now delighted to have started employment at Charles Burrell Centre. I am looking forward to once again working with the local community and helping the centre to develop further”.
The centre also welcomes Danielle Adams and ConnorBell as two new sessional caretakers that provide additional support to Centre Manager Mark Snowdon,Finance Assistant Karen Robinson and General Assistant Rosemarie Fullbrook. All staff are supported by and work with a dedicated team of volunteers, but there’s always an opportunity for more people to get involved. Contact 01842 779867 for more information.
Volunteers create a colourful welcome
Each month we shine the spotlight on a local group that are working within our community. This month, we highlight the work done by Friends of Thetford Station.
It’s been an exciting year for the Platform 1 gardening project. In October, Thetford won Best Medium Stationat the Abellio Station Adopters Awards. Friends of Thetford Station would like to thank all those who contributed to the garden with generous donations and hard work. At the beginning of the year Railscape removed a lot of fly-tipped waste and tamed some large trees. In June, Chilterns Estate Agents donated a bench with 2 planters. Thetford Garden Centre, TerringtonNursery, Barningham resident Lesley Cooper and Shadwell Stud have all contributed generously to the gardening project, and the group is extremely grateful. This year the FOTS volunteers have planted 150 nativehedge plants, over 300 bulbs and countless plants.
In 2016 the group plans to continue to develop the Platform 1 regeneration for the benefit of the community, wild-life and the environment. We spoke with volunteer Fiona Rhind who saw a meeting about the project advertised in the About Thetford magazine

during the Winter of 2013 and decided to get involved.Fiona said: “Myself and my partner had not long moved to Thetford when we saw this project advertised. We wanted to get involved in something that would potentially benefit the town and I love gardening so it seemed like the ideal choice. I felt really proud to read the comments in the Gardening / Allotment section in the last magazine. Volunteering with FOTS gives me a sense of civic pride”.

The weather is getting a bit bleak now but there is still a lot of interest in the garden if you have planteddogwoods with their cheerful coloured stems or a variegated holly. While the evergreens give us pleasure with their brightness in winter, birds and overwintering insects depend on such plants for survival. Mahonia seems to do well in this area and if you are looking for a prickly hedging plant here is one with attractive scented flowers in December and January. It’s getting a bit late to plant bulbs but if you find some you forgot (or pick some up at half-price) get them planted as soon as possible. They will still flower, perhaps a bit later or shorter than usual but still bringing colour when we need it in the spring.
On the vegetable plot your rhubarb crowns might benefit from lifting and dividing. This needs to be done every few years to stimulate fresh growth – they start to rot from the centre if left too long. Strangely the root benefits from being dug up and left to take some frost before replanting. This seems odd as the stems and leaves collapse on the first hint of sub-zero weather. Be sure to have at least one healthy bud to each chunk of root you plant. If you are dividing an old crown and have lots of root pieces you could try potting up some new plants to force in the spring. They are often exhausted by this practice and you should be prepared to throw the plant on the compost heap after it’s provided you with those delicate stems of early rhubarb.

used to sacrifice a red dog to keep rust at bay, callingthe spirit Robigo. It’s easy to see how superstitions took hold in a world where a good crop was essential to survival and the reason for plant disease wasimpossible to fathom. Red dogs are safe from me but I shall certainly try to help the land in the spring with a scattering of fish, blood and bone fertiliser. Plants don’t succumb to disease so much if they are growing vigorously. We have benefited for years from Keith Goldsmith delivering trailer loads of manure and this is the prime way of feeding the soil. Now he is giving up this service - we shall miss your help, Keith - thank you!
For those lucky enough to have any vegetables or fruit in store, make a point of looking them over every week or so. It is impossible to see every bruise of speck of mould and one rotten fruit can infect your whole harvest if left unchecked. Ideally keep fruit stored in trays only one layer deep. This is impractical for potatoes but if you open the sack you will be able to smell if the tubers are rotting.
No meeting this month apart from the club dinner but here’s an idea: it costs about £650 to buy a season ticket to attend Norwich City games but only £6.50 for membership of the Garden and Allotment Club with access to so much joy and delight all year. Christmas Kittens... by Cats Protection Breckland
With Christmas almost upon us, I thought it best to remind you that it is never a good idea to give kittens as gifts for Christmas. Likewise any other pet you may be considering. There are several reasons for this. Firstly are you sure the person you have in mind to receive a kitten, really wants one. And secondly, if they did, it would be better if they were to pick their own kitten, and thirdly, Christmas time is not a good time to introduce a new pet into a household. Especially if it is busy with lots of visitors, front doors opening and closing and lots of noise. A kitten or even an adult cat needs to have a quiet and calm environment when joining a new home, not when there is lots going, with various people who don't usuallylive there, coming and going.
We at Cats Protection have a policy not to home anything between 20th December and 3rd January,as we don't consider this a good time from the cat's point of view. I know this can sometimesbe disappointing, but our cats and kittens can be seen and reserved, just not homed until the festivities are over. Young children cannot be responsible for looking after a cat or kitten, and probably by the time they go back to school, the noveltyof a new addition to the family will have worn off. It should be a family decision, where they all come together to view a kitten or cat, and decide altogetherwhich one they would like to reserve. If they really want a new pet, they will be prepared to wait until the New Year before taking it home. Rehoming Centres are inundated around thos time of year so please think about it responsibly and come and reserve a cat or kitten and we will gladly look after it for you until the holiday is over.
For information, help and advice, or if you need help with the cost of neutering, call us on 01842 810018. To see the lovely cats and kittens currently looking for homes go to our website cats.org.uk/breckland or visit the Cats Protection Breckland Facebook page.

Flint in the Brecks... saving William Carter’s Flint Panels
The Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership team was made aware of the existence of the Brandon Library flint murals as a result of research carried out by BNG’s ‘Flint in the Brecks’ project being delivered by the Breckland Society. The panels were made by master flint knapper William Carter (1857–1904) of the Gun & Building Flint Manufacturers, in Brandon, and donated to the Brandon Library by five of his descendants. They were flagged up by members of the Breckland Societyas potentially under threat because the building is expected to be demolished at some point, and their future was unclear. Following discussions between the BNG team, Suffolk County Council and Brandon Town Council as well as the family of William Carter, it was decided that we should try to do something about that. After discussions with our board’s grant committee, funding was made available through the BNG People’s Pot grant scheme and a plan developed to remove them from the wall. Suffolk County Council archaeologists came to assess the situation and a small project turned into a major piece of work that involved removing a large part of the library wall. The project team was delighted to be able to engage a local building firm GC Godwin to undertake the works. A pleasant discovery during the removal work was that the original builders had left a note on a piece of cigarette packet with the names R. Dennis and B. Bunn dated June 1972. All of the pieces were removed intact and are now being stored at Brandon Country Park pending a decision on how best they can be made available for the continued enjoyment of the local community. In the short term, pictures of the individual panels will be made available on the website, and one will also be featuring as part of the ‘Flint Rocks’

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ALL AT THE MULBERRY
Being Product Wise
As consumers, we often see products advertised and are bowled over by their great benefits they can give to us. I recently learnt about micro beads and the battle to get them banned in the UK. These are tiny plastic balls used in some exfoliating products. The company leading the ban of microbeads is Yorkshire based recycling firm BigGreen.co.uk.
Many people use products containing microbeads to clean their skin and they are unknowingly causing a nightmare for the environment. These tiny plastic beads are ending up in our water ways, where they can poison our fish after being mistaken for food. They also carry other pollutants into our food chain and the tiny pieces of plastic build up in their billions in the waterways and lakes.
It is very important we as consumers act now and be more product wise. Read the label before purchasingand check your cleansers, exfoliators and body washes don’t contain polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene as the sale of products containing these ingredients is still legal in the UK.
Some large cosmetic companies have pledged to phase out plastic micro beads from their products, but until they do so look for greener alternatives such as corncob meal, jojoba beans and apricot shells. Let’s hope that us as consumers can put pressure on suppliers to put an end to the use of plastic beads.
Have a wonderful Christmas and Healthy

Beauty Geek Column - by Caroline King
Share the power of the Pout!
As we are fast approaching the “festive season” I thought it would be the perfect time to share a little history and knowledge on the power of lipstick. So the next time to step out to hit the town and party, you will hopefully think of the little lippie in a different context? Happy reading!
* Although the term “lipstick” wasn’t first used until 1880, lipstick use dates back to Ancient Egypt.
It’s said that Cleopatra made her red lipstick from crushed Carmine beetles and ants.
* At one point in time, it was acceptable to apply lipstick in public during lunch, but never at dinner! * Ever watch a 1920s silent film and wonder why the actresses wore black lipstick? That’s because film stock was sensitive to colour and red lipstick
would register as black!* White lipstick (and matte!) was a trend in the
1960s for a true “mod” look.* Some shimmery lipsticks contained fish scales (also known as “pearl essence”) to provide a light
reflective shine. * It’s said that women who wear lipstick daily (even on sick days!) unintentionally eat about 4 pounds of
lipstick in their lifetime. * According to a study called the “Lipstick Effect” women increase their desire to buy lipstick during
economic recessions. * Lipstick sales also tend to go up on gloomy
or rainy days! But can you blame us? * In the 1700s, a man could have his marriage
annulled if his wife had used lip rouge during their courtship. Oh, the horror!
* Over 80 percent of American women wear lipstick — that’s more than the French.
* Both men and women in Ancient Egypt wore lipstick as a symbol of their status. They applied it almost daily with wet sticks of wood, and flavoured colours such as magenta, blue-black, though red
was also a popular shade. * Lipstick was used as a calling card: In Ancient
Greece, lipstick fell out of fashion among high-class citizens, and was instead used to identify
prostitutes. In fact, it was the law that prostitutes couldn’t go out without wearing lipstick, lest they
“deceive” men.

THETFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL THETFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Schoolchildren Learn from Survivor of Torture
Members of Thetford Grammar School’s Amnesty International group were delighted to welcome a very special guest to the school recently as part of their studies. Perico Rodriguez was invited to talk about his experiences as a prisoner of conscience and a survivorof torture in Argentina. Perico was imprisoned and repeatedly tortured for three years following the 1976 military coup in Argentina led by General Jorge Videla. He is 73 and now lives and works in London.
Organiser Mrs Wingham said that ‘Perico represents the voiceless, the many countless of thousands of otherhuman beings who have their human rights abused by oppressive and aggressive regimes. His speech is important because it brings to the foreground the notion of human rights to a wider audience.’ One of the main threads of his speech was the over-riding idea that we must help others, and that we must always extend that courtesy to those less fortunate than ourselves. Perico went on to say that in our country we are lucky in that we have a democracy that is the envy of the world. He believes that it is not perfect and we still have a way to go, but one thing is for certain, and Perico is right on this, we should never, ever take it for granted.

Ancient House New Exhibition
The new exhibition at Ancient House in Thetford explores the many facets of flint; everything you ever wanted to know about flint but were afraid to ask! From fossils to flakes and soldiers to strike-a-lights, ‘Flint Rocks!’ presents the fascinating story of this versatile rock and the many uses it’s been put to over the years. The exhibition forms part of the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme and is
supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Norfolk County Council. The story of flint is a highly distinctive one for the Brecks area of Norfolk and Suffolk, the flinty core of East Anglia. It includes the building of the black flint terraces and churches in towns like Thetford, the world famous prehistoric flint mines at Grimes Graves and the highly significant Brandon flint knapping industry which supplied hundreds of thousands of gunflints each month to the British army during the Napoleonic wars. On display in the museum will be a variety of flint fossils selected from the county collections dating from 70 to 100 million years ago. Also on show are the flint artefacts used by our ancient ancestors. Norfolk has become famous for its evidence of early human occupation and among the finds displayed will be a selection of black flint tools left behind 60,000 years ago near Lynford north of Thetford where flint tools were found with mammoth bones. The flint mines at Grimes Graves are featured with a modern Lidar image which shows the prehistoric mines minus the vegetation. In more recent times the Brecks area was the centre of the gunflint industry and a large 18th century flint-lock blunderbuss is on display. The flint knappers developed great skill in working this versatile stone and their craftsmanship is displayed in the exhibition. Bill Basham of Brandon made an alphabet and necklace from pieces of flint while William Carter produced a mosaic picture of a galloping horse. A selection of prehistoric obsidian tools from Japan, kindly lent by our ‘sister museum’ in Nagawa in central Japan, lends an international perspective to the displays; while at Grimes Graves our ancestors mined flint for their tools, in the Nagawa area they mined obsidian. Artist in residence, Dan Morgan has created mining models where flint miner Arthur ‘Pony’ Ashley meets a Neolithic miner from Grimes Graves. Other exhibits include archive film of flint mining and knapping, a Wedgwood teapot made using ground up flint, polished flint figurines, and the sound of a flint xylophone.

Citizens Advice has developed a ‘Know Your Rights’ guide explaining the big changes to consumer law that were brought into effect by the Consumer Rights Act. This new law can help people to shop with confidence and to get their money back when things go wrong. For example, everyone knows someone who starts their Christmas shopping early. If that’s you, check the date of your purchase as the new rights only apply to goods bought after 1 October 2015, when the Act came into force. Or you may have tried to take a faulty item back and been offered an exchange or a credit note. Now, since 1 October, if the product is faulty, of poor quality or not fit for purpose, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund. Anyone who needs advice on goods and services can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06, or go online at:
www.citizensadvice.org.uk Alternatively, you can visit Citizens Advice in Breckland House, St Nicholas Street for advice about this or any other issue. We are open Tuesday-Friday, from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

Alpha at Costa
Got questions about life, or about the Christian faith? Never really understood why or what people believe? Or maybe you gave up on God a long time ago butsomething is still niggling at you? People come to Alpha for many different reasons: ....some want to investigate whether God really exists ....some want to ask big questions such as, "How can God allow suffering?"....some have a belief but want to find out more. Whoever you are, wherever you’re at, Alpha is for you. Alpha at Costa in King Street, Thetford, begins Tuesday, 19th January, and will run for 8 weeks. Each evening, from 7 until 9pm, there will be short talks and time to discuss the issues they raise, as well as ask questions. And there'll be lots of opportunity to treat yourself to all the usual goodies that Costa have to offer. Other than that, it'll cost you nothing to come along. 5 ways to make enough money on the side to eventually quit your jobBusiness Matters… With Ryan Windsor
So you want to quit your job, build wealth and live a more secure life? Many of us do and for so many reasons. But how do you do it? This month I’ll give you 5 ways in which you can generate enough side income to eventually replace your full time job so that you can spend time on the other goals in your life. While still being able to pay those pesky bills.
1. Investing in Property: This is by far one of the best ways to generate side income it might be a slow start but once you get going it soon builds momentum and really does look after itself. This is my preferred way to build income as if done correct its long term and sustainable.
2. Write a book: We have all got skill and particular knowledge and experience and this could be turned into a book. This is now easier than ever to do and a great way to build passive income you can even self-publishon Amazon. You don’t need to even write a Novel you can start with short fiction stories or short guide non-fictions books.
3. Sell your skills: I believe we are all skilled at something, and chances are those skills could earn you some side income. Things like Web and graphic design, accountancy, coding, writing and data entry or marketing could earn you some well needed income and this could turn into a mini consultancy. I have a friend who turned his home IT repair business into a full time consultancy for businesses and he now has two full-time employees working with him just three years later. Another a teacher makes £1000 a month Marketing and advising University student on their essays online.

So what are you good at? What will people be willing to pay you to do?
4. Start a blog: This may not bring in truckloads of cash straight away but it is a great way to build exposure and position yourself as an expert. As time goes on and you build up your following you can start to monetize the blog and site with adverts and pitch to companies to review and blog about their products and services. But we warned blogging is not passive it takes time to build and get right. Make sure you do the following:
• Focus on the Content – Quality is king!• Share your content with the world – Get it out there!• Build your fan base from day one – market to those later.
And don’t forget to connect with companies who might want to advertise with you!
5. Sell products online: Finally a really good way to make money on the side could be to sell products on-line whether or not your making the products or buying them in there are plenty of sites you can use to sell them such as; EBay, Amazon and Etsy. And if you are using Amazon one of the best things is you don’t have to have the products delivered to your house you can send direct to Amazon and get them to deliver it to you. Just remember all these methods take work hard work. But it is that determination that will help you build an income that will allow you to pursue new goals and challenges

Community Fly-tipping Officer’s Report
Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence and anyone, including householders, caught disposing of their waste unlawfully can be prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste of any kind and includes any refuse bag, domestic rubbish bags and household goods such as furniture, fridges, freezers, cookers, building rubble, garden rubbish, carpeting, shopping trolleys, hazardous waste and any other items of refuse.
Over the last month I have reported 17 such incidents across the West Thetford estates but sadly this is only the tip of the iceberg. I am pleased to say that some residents are now reporting incidents directly to Breckland District Council themselves and you can do the same. Either go online at:
www.breckland.gov.uk/flytipYou can also upload a photograph on the website or of course you can call 01362 656870. Once reported, you will be given a reference number and can use this to check the outcome of your report at a later date.
One of the issues at the moment is bags of household or garden rubbish being left at the site of litter bins and dog waste bins. This is fly tipping and I am sure the majority of you will agree, this makes certain areas look untidy and uncared for. There seems to be some confusion as to what can be taken to Thetford Recycling Centre, how much you can take and what is free and what you have to pay for. I have ordered a number of flyers on this subject from Norfolk County Council so please get in contact if you would like a copy.
In the lead up to Christmas, many of us take the opportunity to dispose of unwanted items ready for our families visiting and to make room for any Christmas gifts that we might be fortunate enough to receive. Another obvious way to re-cycle is to donate your items to the many charity shops that we have in Thetford. The British Heart Foundation in Minstergate will even collect items of furniture providing they are good enough to re-sell. You can arrange collection on-line at:
www.bhf.org.uk You can also ring 01842 422100 or call in at the shop. The Crack On Foundation will collect various items including Scrap metal, Inkjet & laser cartridges, clothing and fabric. You can either ring them on 0844 3727496 or call in at their base on Stephenson Way.
I would like to thank those who have been helping me over the past couple of months by alerting me to fly tipping incidents. Have a lovely Christmas everyone and PLEASE let us work together to make it the cleanest one yet. Let’ show that we take pride in the area we live in.My contact details are: [email protected]

Job Seeker Advice by Anne Short
The dreaded CV is your first chance (and impression!) to getting your foot in the door so, how should it look and what should it say? Let’s look…
How should it look?Keep it clean and simple and pick a simple font like Arial and use bold for headings. Make sure it is neatly laid out and whatever you do make sure you spell check it! Check for Americanisms (it shows you know your grammar!) and avoid big blocks of text as it is hard to read. Print your name clearly at the top of the first page.
OK, what do I include in my CV?
Divide into sections of: • Opening statement • Personal details • Employment history • Education • Interests and Achievements
Graduated or have limited employment history? Best put your education before employment. If your employment history is more relevant to the job, make that come first.
Opening statement: It’s a 2 or 3 sentence teaser. Don’t use ‘hard working’, make yourself stick out!
Personal details include: • Name, address, mobile • Driving licences • Any visa restrictions
Employment HistoryShow most recent position first in most detail. List your
CALL NOW for Temp & Permanent jobs

job title, the employer, dates and main responsibilities. Salary and reason for leaving. If you are applying for a job not relevant to what you are leaving just list a job title and the employers name, that’s fine. Include any relevant work experience to the new role including any summer jobs or voluntary placements.
Education backgroundList all your schools, colleges and any specialist coursesalong with date and grades. Leaving a subject out is better than leaving a grade out as the potential employer will think you are hiding something.
Interests and achievementsList all hobbies and volunteering, to sound human and interesting. Any achievements, awards or recognition you’ve received is great as are languages you can speak or musical instruments you can play.
Once you’ve finishedCheck your grammar and spelling. It can all seem quite daunting so if you are not sure about anything just pop into Charles Burrell Centre and we can advise you.

Success for Centre Stage
Centre Stage School of Dance has many reasons to celebrate these past few months. In October the students at Centre Stage entered a total of 103 dance exams in ballet, theatre craft, musical theatre and acrobatics and the results were amazing. Every child passed their exam with 92% achieving ‘distinction’ which is the top level that can be awarded! Kim Ritchie, the school’s teacher, has said, “I am so proud of all the children. This is only our second exam session and the results are even better than last time. The childrenworked so hard and their efforts has paid off”. A few members of the dance school also attended a competition in November. “For some of the children it was their first time competing. It was a fun weekend and we are practicing hard for the next one, with even more students this time”, said Kim. All dancers scored very high marks with Maddi-Mae Humphrey and Harmonie Hampton achieving 1st place and Emma Malcolm being awarded 3rd place for her solo and a duet with MelodyOvenden. Kim is also celebrating after achieving her associate ballet qualification with the InternationalDance Teachers Association. Kim regularly attends professional level dance training. “I take lessons to further develop my knowledge to ensure the qualityof teaching in the school is of the highest possible standard. Teaching the correct technique safely is paramount at Centre Stage School of Dance” she said. To find out more about dance classes at Centre Stage you can contact Kim or check out the website:
