  • Local twist to menu as Zaks American Diner comes to Thetford!

Terry Jermy meets with Chief Operating Officer - Chris Carr to find out more for the About Thetford magazine.

The specials menu for Zaks American Diner thats opening soon in the former Bridge Pub will be getting a Thetford twist with the introduction of three new burgers. The A11 burger, the Portugueser and the Dads Army burger will be added in homage to the town.

The new restaurant located just off the A1066 Diss road is set to open towards the end of March / early April and represents the culmination of several years of planning and hard work.

Chris Carr, Chief Operating Officer said; Thetford is a great place and were so pleased with the location for our new restaurant. What with the river running past and being so close to Castle Park and the other green spaces its the perfect location. We know that Thetford already has a number of great places to eat including restaurants and cafes but we are aware that many people are driving out of Thetford on occasions for meals we want to provide people with an option that is affordable, but offers excellent quality. We want people to get the Zaks experience! Thetford deserves that! Zaks makes a conscious effort to purchase from local butchers and grocers and we put a lot of effort into creating the right atmosphere with internal and external decoration. Were so pleased with the reaction that we have received on social media to our Thetford plans and we look forward to opening in the very near future.

Zaks recently held two recruitment days at the Charles Burrell Centre that saw 170 people applying for the 40 jobs available. Chris Carr said; We love the feel of the Centre. As a thank-you for the support provided to us

at our recent event we will be making a donation to the Foodbank that is based there and we look forward to using the Centre in the future for our training activities.

The former Bridge Pub has been redundant for a number of years and after being purchased by Blue Sky Leisure, it received a million pound investment to get it ready for opening. As part of the plans, a wildflower riverbank space will be created. There will initially be space for 110 covers.

Zaks was established in 1976 and since then has built a passionate customer following. The business is a Norwich institution having started as a caravan in the centre of the city before quickly expanding to the Mousehold restaurant in the late 1970s, then Waterside in the 1980s. In 1999 Zaks was acquired by Blue Sky Leisure, which then opened Zaks Poringland in 2005. The business has capitalised on the recent growth in the informal dining market experiencing strong year on year turnover growth for the last 5 years. The Zaks Diner at Mousehold Heath and Zaks Waterside Grill & Bar on Barrack Street in Norwich and Zaks Diner in Poringland Diner all offer their famous burgers as well an extensive choice of authentic American Food in a fun and relaxed environment. Zaks current locations are all neighbourhood based. This is part of its unique proposition and success as their diners are meeting places for the local community and form a social hub for the areas in which they operate.

Current Zaks staff eagerly awaiting applicants at the recent recruitment day at Charles Burrell Centre

  • Our January Community Hero receives his reward.... and donates it to charity.

Digby Smith was our very first Community Hero who you may remember appeared in our January edition. Digby was nominated by two people for his work that he has done for the past 7 years running the 'River Corridor Group'. Every Thursday he and his team walk the corridor of the river, and surrounding area working to keep our beautiful rivers, riverbanks and footpaths clean and tidy.

In return for winning Community Hero, Digby was rewarded with 50 to spend with an advertiser of his choice from the February magazine. However Digby being true to his kind and caring character is donating his 50 to Cancer Research, which has a significant meaning to him and feels the charity would have better use for it than he would. We congratulate Digby for his continuous hard work, and commitment to our town.

Digby and his wife receiving his reward from Shane Hinkley - Manager of Thetford Garden Centre

We are pleased to announce that our March Community Hero is Vera Rhodes, she was nominated by Danny Jeffrey for her continuous work with the local people.

Vera moved to Thetford from London in 1963, where she became a carer at the Cottage Hospital for 20 years. In 1970 Vera became a Occupational Rehab Assistant and continued with this role till 1991 when she retired.

After Vera retired she continued with a carers group for another 20 years, running bingo for the residents and an art class every week. This amazing woman did not stop there, she, also with the warden, ran all the social events. Vera, now 87 years, has been offered retirement, but she feels she can continue and will do so. She still runs a club every Monday where she has people come from outside to take part in quizzes, musical movement, and making crafts which they sell to reinvest back into the club.

Vera is very proud of herself for what she has accomplished, and so are the residents of Thetford.
