For many centuries the area around the Town Bridge was the scene of industrial activity, particularly that of turningbarley grain into malt for brewing beer. The past photograph was taken in the mid-1960s, just before the maltingson the left were demolished to make way for the Riverside Walk that opened in 1968. Past photograph from the David Osborne collection.

Dad’s Army museum had no less than three events in this year’s Thetford Festival and judging by the feedback we havereceived, you enjoyed every one of them! We began with Jones’s Van Day, a day to celebrate one of the museum’s latestexhibits – a beautiful model version made by the late Ted Dillon and we were thrilled that his widow Christine and the familywere able to join us. Christine’s brother, Frank Stone, who first made contact with the museum and accompanied his sisteron the day, said
“We all had a great time and were so impressed with the whole event, butespecially the way you had dealt with your new exhibit. The van looked excellentand it was, not surprisingly, very moving, bringing back old but very pleasantmemories. Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality - Christine andChristopher were so pleased that Ted's skill and talent will be on show for all yourvisitors and in a place celebrating a programme he loved so much.” We werepleased to have artist Steve Lily with us. Steve has been a tremendous support to the work that we do and he is such atalented artist. We were also joined by Andrew Ruff, official photographer for DAAS and the lovely Graham and Marika Sigley, who cooked the locally made ‘Walmington Banger’, which of course is only available from Jones’s Butchers in town.
With the help of Thetford Coach Services, we also launched two new bus relocation tours, which were thoroughly enjoyedby all and hopefully will be making a return visit next year. The GI Day, which was funded by Nofolk’s American Connections, was a great opportunity for people to handle objects, learn a little and enjoy music and dancing of the period.
A big thank you to all the Dad’s Army Museum volunteers that make everyone’s visit such a wow factor and a big thank youto everyone else that supports us in so many ways.
Now, we have launched our biggest ask yet – you may have read that Jones’s Van is due to be sold at Bonhams auction inDecember. The museum is well known for its ability to work hard and raise large sums of money – after all we delivered thestatue in just 2 and half years – however, 3 months may just prove a little tricky, even for us! If, like us, you believe that we
should bring the van home to Walmington on Sea, then we are going to need a very big pushindeed. We are hopeful that one or maybe several generous benefactors will come forwardto help us with a loan to enable us to raise enough money to buy the van. Then over the nextfew years, we will raise the sufficient money needed to pay back the loan(s). As it will go toauction, the exact figure required is as yet unknown, however, it is estimated that it will sell
for £20,000 - £30,000.
We may never see this opportunity again so it is crucialthat we act now!
If you would like to help Dad’s Army Museum with theirlatest project, please contact Leaping Hare TIC on01842 751975 or 07802 701911 or contact them viatheir website www.dadsarmythetford.org.uk

As part of the many services and events we provide atLeaping Hare Tourist Information, did you know that wedeliver guided walks around our town? We are showingan increasing number of local people around too and it’sa lovely way to see the town through a visitor’s eyes. Weare delivering more and more Heritage tours forcommunity groups, businesses or just a small group offriends/family.One recent Heritage tour was for the East Harling WI, andas we met by the Captain Mainwaring statue by itsriverside location you could see that some visitors werea little sceptical of the delights that they were toencounter.
Our town has a history and heritage that spans over2,000 years and by the time we were 45 minutes intoour tour and walking along the Butten Island pathway tothe imposing statue of the Maharajah Duleep Singh, theyhad already heard stories and anecdotes associated withMainwaring’s cohort of fictional Home Guard, thehaunted inhabitants of the Bell Inn and its once infamouslandlady Betty Radcliffe, the love/hate figure of ThomasPaine one of our illustrious son’s, stories of howimportant papers sent to Thetford to be pulped duringthe second world war (Thetford Pulpware), heard that theRiver Little Ouse was an industrious 18th centuryhighway to serve the tannery, mills and malting that lined

That, of course, is just the potted version! More secretsremain to be revealed, and if you want to take one ofthese very entertaining tours, why not contact theLeaping Hare office to arrange one at your convenience? We usually finish in the Marigold Tea Rooms of the Dad’sArmy Museum with a nice tea/coffee and biscuits anddiscuss the many interesting facets of our beautiful andhistoric town. Why don’t you discoverwhat our visitors have known for years – I promise youwill be both surprised and enthralled!
A really interesting extension to the guided walking touris going to be launched by the Thetford Players onSunday 28th October at 2pm, the Thetford Historical Walkreally does bring the Thetford story to life as actors willplay the roles of past famous and infamous residents ofthe town, and your guide will be none other than ThomasPaine. Skin Healing Tips Our skin is so amazing how it heals itselffrom cuts, bruises and burns etc. We tendto take for granted how well it does thesejobs until things go wrong.
Often we can prevent damage to the skin bywearing sun screens and avoiding extreme changesin temperature but sometimes we need to give it alittle help. Here is a short guide to looking after yourskin:-
If you have a miner burn, cool it immediately, ifpossible run under cool water or apply coolcompress to the area first to get the temperaturelowered. Then apply Aloe Vera. You can use itstraight from the plant by tearing open a leaf andjust applying the gel straight onto the skin, or it isavailable in a tube, make sure it does not have lotsof other added ingredients though as that maycause irritation. It really cools, calms and heals, hot, sore or swollen skin. Aloe Vera is also an excellentaftercare for over exposure to sun.
Insect bites can be treated with either. Apply either1 drop of Lavender oil or a small amount of AloeVera to the bite, to calm and soothe the skin.
Lavender also has good healing properties and canbe applied to the skin neat but must be used verysparingly. It is good also for bruises, insect bitesand cuts, and it has antiseptic and antiinflammatory properties.
Gardeners are often suffering from dry, chappedhands and a good home made exfoliate will helpto remove dry skin and also stains (for those whore- fuse to wear gloves!). Mix sugar together withlemon juice to form a paste, rub into hands andfingers concentrating on dry or stained areas thenrinse with warm water. Next apply a goodmoisturiser as it will be easily absorbed now the dryskin has been removed. You could pop your handsin some rubber gloves or a plastic bag to createheat so the cream can penetrate into the skinbetter.

Jack Pilling Art Gallery
“A” & “B” section of the Jack Pilling Art Galleryproving to be a success.
Month six could prove our lucky month for the future ofthe Jack Pilling Art Gallery. The Gallery Art Competitionproved a great success as there were 145 pictures. An“A” section, that was for those artists who have exhibitedhere before and the “B” section for those who had not.
We’ve been open now since the 6th March this year andhave gone from exhibiting 107 to 145 pictures, with potsand ceramics from Frank Logan, jewellery from the twoladies, Debbie Bailey and Dorothy Hagarty, as well asfancy wood pens from the talented David Grimmond.
The Art Competition was a great triumph 145 pictures,(did I mention this before!) what a problem we had to fitthem all in, sorry to the numerous people who missedthe dead line of the Wednesday, but we could not fit anymore in. Next year we will have a change of rules and areduction in the number of pictures we will accept for thecompetition.
Well done to those who entered and congratulation tothe winners. The prizes were presented by the Mayor
Councillor Mr. Terry Lamb on the 5th September to Mrs.Cheryl Watts who was the winner of Group ‘A’ and Mrs.Lyn Esgate winner of the ‘B’ section the Fox by Mrs.Marion Carson was the customer’s winner. Sales of ourpictures are going great as overall we have sold 88 asthey are reasonable priced. But the message thatmatters is Thetford has the Jack Pilling Art Gallery, comeand have a cup of tea (30p) and look in wonder at theview. Don Goveia.

Charles Burrell Museum was pleased to have takenpart in this year’s Thetford Festival and the firstThetford Academy Art Exhibition proved to be an instanthit with many people wanting to purchase the students
art work – none of which was for sale! It iswonderful that the students work hasreceived such a response.Fingers crossed for next year’s Festival, whenwe hope to welcome a whole new selection ofwork for you to enjoy. The Art Attack sessions that were led byKaren-Emma White from the Ancient HouseMuseum were incredibly popular too. Manyfound inspiration from the art and then createdtheir very own piece to take away. CharlesBurrell Museum is open every Tuesday 10am– 2pm and the last Saturday of the month10am – 4pm.
The SoRT iT Pledge welcomed Lovewell Blake’s ThetfordOffice as the first corporate member to formalise anexclusive offer to SoRT iT members, offering free noobligation advice as and when required for the first 3months. SoRT iT member Bob Waple H & S Consultant sawthe value of this offer and was keen to sign up. He too is afirm believer in the power of local business assisting eachother and inspired by Lovewell Blake’s offer of free business advice has come up with his own SoRT iT pledge – anincredible 20% discount. The words health & safety are oftenfollowed with a groan, but it needn’t be a chore orcomplicated. For many businesses, all that is required is abasic series of tasks to ensure that that you comply with thelaw, and provide your employees a safe environment to workin. Companies can find it very hard to justify a full time wage
for a dedicated Health & Safety person, and often cannotafford to have another employee split their duties. Attendance AwardsThe staff and students at The Thetford Academy havebeen focussing on improving attendance over the courseof the last academic year. Several recent studies haveshown that there is a direct link between goodattendance and better academic achievement and theschool is committed to helping every student achieve thebest grades that they can.
The Academy has an attendance target of 95%, no morethan ten days absence per year, for all students and istrying hard to achieve this. The appointment of adedicated attendance improvement officer, Mrs ClaireDutton, has helped the Academy to make a 4% jump inits attendance in the last year but unfortunately this stillleaves the school some way short of its overall target.
This year the Academy has introduced two new initiativesto improve attendance. Any student that is absent fromschool will have a return to school interview with theirform tutor. This will help the staff at the Academy toensure that any child missing lessons is helped to catchup with work that they have missed and any student thatneeds additional support, as a result of theirillness/absence, receives it.
The second initiative focuses on rewards. Last year twolocal companies, Brantano and Discover Hair sponsoredprizes for students with good attendance. This pilotscheme proved a big hit with the students at theAcademy and is being developed further during2012/2013. The Academy has already secured fundingto be able to reward students with high attendance levelsat the end of each term and is currently organising aseries of reward trips for good attendees as well.
Any student that achieves the Academy target of 95%will be eligible for consideration for these termly rewardsthat will be announced in assemblies at the school. A‘super prize’ that will be of benefit to students, and theirfamilies, will also be awarded this year for any studentthat manages to achieve 100% attendance for the entireacademic year. Full details of this prize will be given inthe first Academy newsletter of the year.
The Academy would like to thank Brantano and DiscoverHair for their support over the last year and for helpingto kick start the new attendance rewards. With theirsupport and the support of the families of the studentsat The Academy we are hopeful that the target of 95%can be reached for the first time.

On Sunday 16th September 2012 the Mayor ofThetford, Cllr Terry Lamb, hosted Thetford’s Battle ofBritain Commemoration Service at St Cuthbert’sChurch followed by refreshments in the Large Courtof the Guildhall.
The Service was, again, well supported by localresidents, Civic Dignitaries and Councillors fromThetford Town Council. The Civic Dignitariesincluded Deputy Lieutenant Melinda Raker, TheHonourable Patrick and Lady Kay Fisher, representatives from RAF Honington, Lakenheathand Mildenhall, The Vice Chairmen of Norfolk County Council and South Norfolk DistrictCouncil and Deputy Mayors representing Attleborough and Wymondham. The Service wasconducted by Canon Bob Baker and the Address was given by the new Archdeacon ofNorfolk the Venerable Steven Betts.
The Battle of Britain Services take place nationwide to commemorate the Battle which wasone of the turning points of the Second World War and this year was its 72nd year. Over 500Royal Air Force pilots were killed in the bitter struggle to save the UK from invasion.
The annual Service marks the nation's gratitude to the pilots and aircrew of the RAF whoprevented Germany from gaining air superiority in the summer and autumn of 1940. WinstonChurchill famously declared: "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed -by so many - to so few".The Mayor would like to thank Canon Baker and Ray Towler from Thetford Royal Air ForceAssociation for organising the service. The date of next year’s service is Sunday 15th September 2013.

The Council has entered into a contract with English Heritage, which has providedfunding to enable the Council to take responsibility for the day-to-day management ofthese important sites. There is now a gate to the Priory site, unlocked first thing in themorning and locked at dusk. It is hoped that this will offer a greater measure ofprotection. Common Sense NewsMembers of the Common Sense Club who enjoyed ouropening lecture during the Thetford Festival will no doubtbe looking out for our speaker’s book entitled GeorgianLondon, which is with Penguin and expected to beavailable in the new year. Meanwhile, Lucy Inglis is dueto appear on television this month, fronting a look on theeighteenth century pastime of bare-knuckle fighting.
Conflict and violence also feature in the remainingmeetings on Club’s programme this Autumn. Followingup a suggestion made in the wake of the riots last year,Ted Vallance returns to Thetford on Friday October 5th toaddress ‘Mass Protest and the English’. Since hisilluminating talk on Thomas Paine during the 2009Bicentenary, he has published a compelling RadicalHistory of Britain and will no doubt have much to say bothon the events of the past and the possibilities of thefuture. 8pm in the Old School on Bridge Street.
Violence often broke out on the hustings in GeorgianEngland but we may assume the conflict will be restrictedto verbal sparring on Friday 19th October, again at 8pm,
when in the slightly larger arena of the Williamson Hallof Thetford Grammar School we hold our own Hustings.
The party politicians who will engage with matters ofnational import are the new Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Early Years, local MP ElizabethTruss, Baroness Scott of Needham Market, President ofthe Liberal Democrat Party from 2008-10, Weetingparish councillor and coordinator of Breckland GreenParty Sandra Walmsley and Labour’s Peter Smith, chairman of the constituency party and candidate-designate for SW Norfolk. The meeting will follow aQuestion Time format with Melvyn Roffe once again inthe chair. All are invited to put forward questions onnational issues by emailing:[email protected] by October 17th atthe latest.
Membership of the Common Sense Club is open to alland there is no charge for events which are supportedby the Heritage Lottery Fund and generously hosted byThetford Grammar School. We look forward to new andestablished members joining us for some lively sessions, such as would have been relished by our fellow-Thetfordian Thomas Paine.

Breckland Cats ProtectionTel: 01842 810018
We receive a lot of calls about found cats and also lostcats but they very rarely match up. A couple of weeksago we did have a ginger female one of our volunteerstook to the vet and she was micro chipped and she hadcome from LEEDS! A very happy owner travelled downand collected her but no one knows how she arrivedhere, presumably she had hitched a lift.
If you find a stray cat please try and take it to the vet tobe checked for a micro chip, it is still rare to find one,but you never know.
If you have lost a cat don’t panic because sometimesthey come wandering back wondering what all the fussis about. Check your garden and house carefully, alsosheds and garages and ask neighbours to check theirs.Ring us and we will put it on our lost and found, also ringthe vets and if your pet is micro chipped ring Petlog.
Most local councils Environmental Health Departmentswill keep a record of cats found killed on the roads. It isworth giving them a call to rule this out. You can put upposters in shops and vets, with a description or picture
of cat and your phone number, not your address for yoursafety.
If someone says they have found the cat always take afriend or relative with you to see it. Hopefully your catwill soon be home and you can lessen the chance oflosing him again by making sure he is neutered andkeeping him in at night. Microchipping is a good ideaand can be done for as little as £10 when offers are onat places like Pets at Home.
5 year old Keira is looking for a special home with adultsonly. She is a pretty girl and enjoys a fuss on her terms.Keira is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. Canyou offer her a safe, loving home? We also have 27kittens needing homes. Our Autumn Fayre will be in StCuthberts Church Hall on October 6th.
Hope to see you then.

Thetford Allotment Competition
On the 4th July, Maureen and John Lister and myself,Roger Rout, set out to choose the allotments to be judgedin this years Allotment competition on behalf of theThetford Town Council.
We realised it would be a difficult task after the seasonwe have had, a very warm March followed by almost thewettest summer since records began. The CountyCouncil imposed a hose pipe ban on the 6th April, on thesame day it rained and did not stop for quite some time, crops we had set now had to compete with weeds, andthe weeds always win.
To be honest the three of us did not expect to find anyAllotments to meet the standards for the R H S judges tojudge, but surprisingly 57 allotments did.
On the 11th July I let the judges see the allotments wehad chosen, handing them forms for the competitionwhile leading them round the allotment sites, showingthem the plots we had chosen to be judged. At the endof a very long day they handed me the results.

StreetvibeAnnual Presentation
What a fantastic day for Streetvibe dance crew, and we couldn't have asked for better weather!!!
Streetvibe held their annual presentation event with adifference this year which see students gain rewards fortheir dance exams held earlier this year. We wanted toturn it into a Hawaiian funday, a chance for the crew tohave some fun... We had American sweet stalls, NannyMcCupcake, bouncy castles and loads ofother stalls at the event.
We had our trophy ceremony delivered bychoreographer Kelly Eastwood, followed by araffle to which we were donated prizes bylocal businesses, a quick thank you to thosewho donated to name a few, The Chase (mealfor two) Kings Head, Ace Tanning,International Groceries, Flor Do Liz, specialthoughts, Boots, LLoyds, Boys 2 Men &Superdrug... Also to Dominos Pizza who evencooked us up 5 large pizzas for the event!!
Everyone dressed up in grass skirts & flowered necklacesto support the Hawaiian theme, and fun was had by all.
All money raised from this event goes back into the crewto help us prepare for up and coming dance shows andcompetitions.. Without this support it just wouldn't bepossible. Also a big thank you to Councillor Carl Clarkwho has taken to help Streetvibe with funding, and helpedimmensely with the funday, your support means so much.
Streetvibe train every Tuesday night at Abbey Farm ArtsCentre, you can also look us up on Facebook..

Thetford Grammar School’s young athletes recently hada first hand experience of the amazing summer of sportwhen they spent the day at the Paralympics. During themorning the youngsters spent time in the Olympicstadium watching the athletics programme reaching itsconclusion, before making their way to the Aquaticscentre to see a variety of swimming finals in theafternoon.
When the pupils took their seats in the stadiumalongside 85000 other supporters they did not think thatthey would soon be witnessing a feast of world recordsas the track and field programme got into full swing. Topof the bill was the amazing Oscar Pistorius who waswarming up before his victory in the 400 metres. But themost impressive event came when the whole stadiumwas invited to take part in a rendition of theYMCA. Thetford student Archie Blakemoresaid that he had ‘never seen anything like it.’
Before going poolside the young sport-starsspent the lunchtime walking around the siteto sample the atmosphere to experience whatit was like to be part of the world’s biggestsporting spectacle. Some visited the Orbit, theamazing red coloured structure which towersover the park, whilst others watched liveaction from the giant screens in the two
special parks devoted to keeping everyone up to datewith events elsewhere in the site.
During the afternoon one of the swimming highlights wasthe chance to see Ellie Simmonds attempting to claimanother medal. According to the youngsters the noiseinside the centre was so loud ‘it was deafening’, as thecrowd roared Simmonds home to a Silver medal in the100 metres freestyle.
The trip was organised as part of the students’ GCSEstudies in P.E., and Thetford Grammar School’s P.E.teacher, Mr Hill, said it was ‘a wonderful day that comesaround once in a lifetime.’. He went on to say that thestudents had learnt a lot which would stand them in goodstead for the future. You can see Thetford GrammarSchool’s young athletes going through their paces duringthe school’s Open Morning which will be taking place onSaturday 20th October at 10:00 a.m.

Many of you will have seen the transformation takingplace on Platform 1 at Thetford Railway Station duringthe summer months. We have received manycompliments from rail users and passers-by admiring thenew flower bed. This is down to a number of people andlocal organisations and companies.
Thetford Garden Centre donated tools, gloves and somesleepers while Shadwell Stud Nursery provided over 200flowers with more from Thetford Garden and AllotmentClub, all of which were painstakingly planted one wetafternoon by members of “Friends of Thetford Station”,Keith, Pam, Omar, Matt, Mike, Cristiano, Mel, Margaretand Luke.
The Friends metamorphosed from the Thetford YouthCouncil which set the project in motion two years ago.Sadly the Youth Council is no more, but young peoplehave become young adults and still want to see thestation become a better gateway to Thetford. We arekeen to invite and even encourage you to get involved.
There are lots of different things to do. Youdon’t need to know about gardening, or art toget involved. Every little bit of help fromanyone is most welcome, the more who areinvolved, the less there is to do for everyone!
We need people to help with accounts, organisation, art, fund-raising, publicity, secretarial (notes of meetings, letters etc) andmore. We also pick up the litter left droppedby ‘litter-louts’ and clean up graffiti. Everyonehas skills. Most of our work is focussed onPlatform 1 (the Norwich bound side) which isover 78 metres long(255 ft). If a local groupwants a small piece of the platform to
transform, we’ll happily discuss the detail.
We hold monthly planning meetings on the first Tuesdayof every month at 7.00pm at the Baptist Church in KingStreet (opposite Poundland). Please come along and findout more about how you can help to transform one of thegateways to Thetford. You can also catch us on facebookat “Friends of Thetford Station”.
The train now arriving . . . . . . . . . . will see change happening!

After the summer break Thetford Dolphins first event isas host of the Nifty Fifty's Gala, held at the Waterworldpool. It’s a good chance for some of the younger orpreviously non-competing swimmers to work throughtheir nerves and swim against other clubs, with mostevents being 50m, with just a few 100m swims.
Many members really went all out, swimming up to 5different events during the day and around 60% of swimsresulted in new personal best times. Youngsters MaddieRolph, Jessica Norkett and Beth Farrow (all from the 10and under age groups) had a great day with multiple pb'sin their events.
Macaulay Harvey picked up first place in both the 50mbreastroke and 100m IM and Aiden Try won the 50mbutterfly - all in the 11 years category. Ruby Last, OwenDouthwaite and Luke Collins came away with a superb5 pb's in the 5 events they each entered. Only slightlybehind with 4 pb's were James Trayton, Amie Copp, BethFarrow and Francesca Ashley. All in all, a great day forthe swimmers - well done!

Barnham Fete 2012A good time was had by all at Barnham Feteon Sunday 9th September, when, in warmsunshine, villagers from Barnham and wellbeyond (Australia!) came together to enjoya day of traditional fun and entertainment.
The theme of this year’s Fete was ‘RuleBritannia’ and there was plenty of evidence ofred, white and blue adorning all the stalls.Record numbers came out to spend theafternoon splatting rats, smashing crockery, enjoying the BBQ or just having a pint, whilewatching the energetic arena displays.
The Green Dragon Morris Dancers, always agreat favourite, brought a splash of colour tothe ring and entertained the crowds royally, despite the heat. Next came Claire Beeton andfriends with their clever canines, who put on aterrific display of dog obedience.
Finally, a large crowd of brightly dresseddancers were put through their paces byaward-winning teachers from Zumba Lou-Lou,to a mixture of salsa and hit music. If you’reinspired to join a Zumba class, they take placeregularly in both Thetford and Stanton.
Meanwhile, around the arena and insideBarnham Village Hall were numerous stalls, offering everything from tea and cakes, toplants, books, bric-a-brack, handmade items, toys, bottles and many many more.
Thank you to all who worked so tirelessly onthe day, and indeed before and after! WithoutBarnham’s great community spirit, such anevent would not be the massive success that itis each year.
Help was also on hand from Thetford ATC(1109 Squadron) and RAF Honington, to all ofwhom Barnham is enormously grateful. Ourthanks also to Wing Commander James Lennieand his lovely wife, Hayley, who officiallyopened the Fete, in this most memorable ofyears, and stayed all afternoon to enjoy thespectacle. This traditional village event happensannually so why not come and enjoy it with usnext year?!
