Welcome to April’s About Thetford

Magazine...Your magazine this month is particularly egg-citing with

plenty of news and information about things to keep

you occupied during the Easter period. Our ever popular

‘what’s on’ section contains details about numerous

Easter events as well as the Thetford Garden and

Allotment Club’s Spring Show.

With all those extra calories being consumed in the

coming weeks, what better time to spare a moment to

think about your health. There’s numerous health related

articles and adverts this month, including details of the

‘Health Awareness Day’ on the 11th April, so why not pop

along and see what it’s all about?

The ‘I remember when’ section certainly went down well

last month and we have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of

the letters and e-mails sent to us on this. Sadly we can’t

publish all of them but we’ve chosen the letter sent to us

by Mr James Ladipo this month, detailing Thetford in the

1950’s - thank-you for sharing this with us.

The Ancient House Museum article on page 42 is also

a must read this month. We thoroughly enjoyed Karen’s

regular blog about her recent visit to India.

Wishing all our readers and advertisers an enjoyable and

restful Easter break.Best wishes, Terry, Ricky and Michelle

April 2015

This months Community Hero title is awarded to somebody who works tirelessly to support other local families, despite having a family of her own and a full-time night shift job at a local supermarket.

Both Victoria Bush and Dave Shrewsbury have nominated Michelle Gray over the past few months. Victoria said; “On behalf of many families in Thetford, I would like to nominate Michelle as Community Heroine of the month. Along with her loyal team, Michelle has devoted her time and energy over the past 13 years to running the Thetford Toy Library. Her experiences with her own children and as a childminder led her to realise how vital good play sessions are to the well-being of the whole family, and the Toy Library began life allowing everyone to access high quality toys at low prices. This fabulous community hub now not only provides toys, but play sessions including cooking, arts and crafts and music for pre-school children, as well as Saturday sessions for older children and events such as Easter Egg hunts and discos.

Michelle works nights at Sainsburys so that she can be available for the 5 play sessions a week which the service now provides since their move to bigger premises earlier this year. Victoria said that “During a discussion about what we would do if we won the

Monday Club to benefit from £50 donationIn March's edition Vera Rhodes won Community Hero of the month, after a great response we would like to tell you a bit more our winner. On the 5th January 2007 the Cottage Cospital closed down. As Vera already lived at Kings Court she asked if she could carry on the daycare by using the lounge on their premises. Every Monday, with the use of the lounge, non residents are dropped off by driver Allan who works for ‘Norse’. Allan also collects their lunch which is provided by the Terrier Pub and Vera provides the dessert. On Wednesday, the residents of Kings Court have an art class and take part in the bingo. Vera has two helpers; Julia and Ellen who help with the crafts on Mondays with the non residents, Ellen also helps with the quizes. Between Vera, Ellen, Julia and the members of the Monday Club they produce amazing crafts which they sell and then either donate the money to charity or use this to take the members for a Christmas Dinner. Vera would like her reward of £50 to go towards her Monday Club. Vera has 4-5 places available for anyone who wishes to join the Monday Club. Please contact the About Thetford Magazine for more details on 07742157967.

lottery, Michelle simply said – ‘It would be great because I could give up work and be at the Toy Library full time’ – that is the sort of person she is!Congratulations Michelle, we’re delighted to award you Community Hero status and you now have £50 to spend with an advertiser of your choice courtesy of our sponsor - Thetford Garden Centre.

Annual Report by Lynn Ready(Chair of the Steering Committee)

Just over a year ago, I knew nothing about the U3A. So when a friend of mine suggested I look into starting a U3A for Thetford, I never dreamed we’d behere today with nearly 300 members. It just goes to show how much it was needed. Success during our first year has been due to anincredible amount of effort and commitment from many people. We’ve not always got it right, and we’ve had to “learn on the job”, but everyone has been patient and supportive. All our group leaders deserve huge thanks for having established over 40 interest groups covering a wide range of topics from educational, fun, social and a Holiday Group that has organised the first of what I hope will be many trips abroad. I’m sure you’ll all agree this is quite an achievement. These activities are up and running because members volunteer to be leaders.

There are still interest groups we’d like to start, and when we have members to lead these, they will be started. Some people shy away from the idea of being a Group Leader because they feel they have to be an expert. While it is useful to have someknowledge of a subject, it is certainly not essential – the whole ethos of the U3A is about everyone sharing their knowledge and experience. Our very popular monthly talks have been varied and interesting; some we’ve simply sat back and enjoyed, while others have creat-

ed wide debate. Themes have included Radio Caroline, poetry, WWII D-Day, Greenpeace, an animal commnicator and Queen Elizabeth I re-enacted by the hugely talented Rachel Duffield! Despite the great success of our first year, there are still a lot of people in Thetford and the surrounding villages who have not heard of the U3A. But as word spreads about the wonderful range of things we have to offer, I’m convinced we will continue to go from strength to strength. To conclude, my biggest personal thanks goes to the steering committee, for all their support and enthusiasm to see Thetford U3A succeed.

Busy month for the Thetford and District Dementia Support Group

March was a very busy month for Thetford & District Dementia Support Group. We are very pleased to confirm that we were fortunate to be awarded £1,000 recently from the Breckland Pride Participatory Budget Fund, towards our Arts & Crafts Therapy Project, the money will help us to buy materials and the professional support needed to do this project. We would like to thank everyone who voted for us.

We also held our Time for a Cuppa day to support the Admiral Nurse service and were very well supported with guest visitors including Councillor Robert Kybird and Glynis Irish, the Mayoress Sylvia Armes, and our very own Admiral nurse Vanessa Price. We are delighted that the day raised over £230 for Dementia UK towardstheir Admiral Nurse Services. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us as well as donating cakes and tombola prizes.

On April 11th between 10am and 12 noon, the Thetford & District Dementia Support Group in partnership with the Royal British Legion will be holding an information service open to people with dementia, carers and family where they can find out more about dementia, services and support available locally.

Following on from this event we will then be one of many groups and organisations who will have a stand at School Lane Surgeries health fair in the CarnegieRooms between 1pm and 5pm. Our group will be holding a dementia awareness day on Tuesday May 19th where we will have information about dementia

Recent ‘Time for a cuppa day’ held by TADDS

and other services and support available to carers, families and people with memory problems - make a note in your diary and see the May edition of About Thetford for further information.

The group meets every Friday between 10am and 1pm in the lounge area at Lord Walsingham Court where we offer carer support, and a range of different activities as well as refreshments and a lunch for £2.50 (for those who would like to stay).

If you would like more information please call us on 07542 866519 or email:

Thetford Health Awareness Day

Local people involved in the School Lane and Grove Lane Surgery Patient Groups are promoting ‘health awareness’ at an informative open day on 11th April 2015. Held at the Carnegie Room in Thetford, the Health Awareness Day will see a range of displays and information provided by health related support groups. In the evening people can watch the Thetford Playersenact a series of narrated health scenarios, with practical advice on what to do when faced with such situations. Keith Eldred, Chair of School Lane Surgery in Thetford, said: “The idea for a Health Awareness Day has been supported by both Patient Groups' wish to promote all the great healthy activities and support groups that are available locally.

There are many such groups in Thetford that people may not be aware of, so getting information out is vital. We felt that by using the acting skills of the ThetfordPlayers, we could portray some common health scenarios that people might have to face, but in which they may not know how to react. By working with the Surgery’s clinical team, the Players will show what to do and where to go for help.”

Carly Bassett, Practice Manager at School Lane Surgery, said: “It’s a fantastic idea that the Patient Groups have come up with to encourage local people to take control over their own health”.

The Health Awareness Day has a range of stalls open between 1 – 5pm on 11th April at the Carnegie Room. The evening session, presented by the Thetford Players, runs between 7 – 9.15pm. For more information, contact School Lane Surgery Patient Reference Group (PRG) at:

Charles Burrell Centre Update... by Mark Snowdon (Centre Manager) - An exciting new chapter begins at Charles Burrell Centre on 1st April as Thetford Town Council sign over the site to a newly formed Co-operative made up of Councillors, local business experts, residents and tenant representatives. The centre is then completely financially independent. Our aim is to ensure that the wider community are actively involved in the running of centre and play a vital role in the centre’s future. Therefore, we are offering people a chance to become shareholders in Charles Burrell Centre Ltd. Shares can be purchased for a minimum of £1.00 and each shareholder is entitled to voting rights in relation to future decisions at CBC. This opportunity will allow local residents & businessesto show their support for the centre. In March we completed a major deal with West Suffolk College that will see eight rooms at the centre being used for full time college courses in the coming months. This is a huge development that will benefit Thetford and the surrounding areas and highlights how important CBC is becoming for the local area. With the site now 80% occupied and plans to develop further we are very proud of how far we have come in such a short space of time. For our progress to continue we are relying on the

support of the whole community. Not only can you show your support by purchasing shares, you can become actively involved in helping us decorate and maintain the facilities. Having recently secured fundingfrom Breckland Pride Participatory Budget we are now looking to make improvements to our facilities and recruit a volunteer maintenance team. Get in touch for more information using the number above.

Thetford Library’s Great Big Read!

For our annual community read, where we encourage members of our local community to read & share the same books , we’ve chosen books by two local crime

authors : Elly Griffiths & Jim Kelly. In Griffiths’ “Dying Fall”, forensic archaeologist Ruth

doesn’t want Galloway and Nelson to discover the truth….

Vehicle Activated SignsThe Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) have now been installed on Brandon Road and Nun’s Bridges Road. Thetford Town Council provided these signs in partnership with Norfolk County Council through their ParishPartnership funding scheme and the sites were selected following suggestions received from the residents of Thetford. Thetford Town Council would once again like to thank all who took the time to forward their suggestions.

Commonwealth Fly The Flag EventOn Monday 9th March 2015, Thetford Town Council joined with 38 nations across the world in raising the Commonwealth Flag. The Commonwealth Fly The Flag event marked the special connection that the countries share.

Dignitaries and representatives from local groups looked on as the Mayor of Thetford read out the Commonwealth Affirmation and the Commonwealth Flag was raised by Thetford Police Cadet Francesca Bond. After this ceremony, the group moved into the Council Chamber in Kings House to hear readings from the Mayor, Rev Tony Heywood and Father Matthew George and observe a two minute silence to remember those from the Commonwealth who fought and lost their lives in the First World War.

Participatory Budget Funding SchemeThetford Town Council are pleased to announce that they have been successful in securing £1000 for the Skatepark through the Participatory Budget Scheme. The scheme helped highlight just how many fantastic projects there are in Thetford and the surrounding area. Thank you to all who voted.

Sign up now for the Panto Dame Pageant – a very funny evening and a great one for companies to get just a little bit competitive with! Are you involved with dance of any description? If the answer is yes, then why not get your group to sign up to show off their skills in the Festival Day of Dance? The Music Arts Project (MAP) will be running a series of music work shops for young people. Alternatively, if you would love to sing in a Gospel choir, Thetford Sings Gospel is looking to build a choir of 60 voices (18+) for this year’s Festival event. They are looking for singers with enthusiasm, even if you’ve never sung in a choir before but would love to give it a go or have only sung your heart out in the shower!

The March meeting of Thetford Inner Wheel was given over to our Nominations Evening, at which the organisation of our club within the Inner Wheel movement was discussed and planned.

We enjoyed our Wretham House Hotel supper, and made arrangements for the next months fundraising activities, and our Birthday Lunch in April.

Mary Rolton. Club Correspondent.

Rotarians were entertained by The Ancient House Curator Oliver Bone at their March Dinner meeting. Oliver gave a presentation on his Grandfather, Muirhead Bone. Born in Glasgow in 1876 he became

an artist with the Glasgow School before moving to London and his first exhibition in the early 1900’s. His main claim to fame was being appointed as the first official War Artist in 1916. Oliver showed a number of his works which were clearly intended to portray an acceptable image of the war. He was also a war artist during the second world war, dying in 1953.

Members were joined by members of Inner Wheel collecting for Marie Curie at Tescos recently. We would like to thank Tesco and their customers’ for their generosity, £1613 was raised in total.

Talk by former prisoner of War at Thetford Amnesty International

The Thetford Group of Amnesty International is delighted to announce that Perico Rodriguez has agreed to give a talk in Thetford on 21st April at 1pm at Thetford Grammar School.

Perico is a former Prisoner of Conscience adopted as such, in 1976 by the Diss AI Group (of which two of our number were then members). He was badly tortured by The Argentinian Junta and has recently returned to Argentina to give evidence against his torturers.

The successful Amnesty campaign to release him from custody without charge was the subject of the cover story in The Observer Colour Magazine on Amnesty's 20th birthday. There will be no charge for entry. So that we have some idea of numbers, if you'd like to attend please call or mail the Chair of AI Thetford: Simon John on 07940 570358; [email protected]."

The March meeting of the Thetford Society welcomed local historian David Osborne who showed slides of Thetford in the Great War. The capacity audience heard of the impact on the town of the many camps in and around Thetford and the losses sustained by local families as more and more men were enrolled for service overseas.

Later that week the Society filled the Carnegie Room for a show of home movies made by former Thet-ford dentist, Mr Arthur Bagshaw, featuring local scenes from the 1950’s and 60’s. It is hoped that the films will be shown again during the Thetford Festival.

The next meeting is on April 7th at 7.30pm at the URC when Sergeant Marcus Wall will speak about policing in Thetford. New members always welcome.

News from Thetford Probus

Coinciding with the opening of the town’s new bus interchange, the timing of Thetford Probus Club’s monthly talk, given by one of their own members, could hardly have been more apt especially when entitled ‘What’s it like to live in Thetford’. Terry Lamb, retired schoolmaster and local councillor drew a fascinating picture of a community that has changed greatly over the past 60 years.

Recalling a vibrant town centre in the 1950s offering a wide choice of shops including many clothing outfitters, bakers, butchers and greengrocers, but no charity shops or bookmakers and barely any selfservice stores, Mr Lamb spoke about the, then, borough council’s decision to go for growth inbecoming an overspill town for London and how this shaped the future development of the town. Combined with the subsequent demise of the borough council and the transfer of most powers to the newly-formed district council in the 1970s, he reasoned that more problems were created than solved and the legacy of this can still be seen and felt by the community.

One of his saddest memories were of the town’s heritage being destroyed in what he considers an act of planning vandalism. “The contractor even commented to me: ‘I have never before had todemolish such beautiful and substantial old buildings and maltings’.”

Inevitably, the talk led to a lively debate and many questions about the future of the town. Needless to say members showed their agreement and appreciation with a round of applause and a vote of thanks.

Caroline King - Beauty Geek…

This month’s feature is on nails and nail care. My next feature will be on hair removal in preparation for Spring and Summer sunshine. So please email me:

[email protected]

Or check out my social media pages on Facebook & Twitter and leave your questions relating to this topic that you would like help or advice with.

Caroline Wabe asks: What’s the best product for strengthening after acrylics are removed? Mine are a mess.It is a common myth that acrylic nails actually damage your nails. Applied properly they should not cause long term damage to the nail. However, this isn’t often the case. It is also important that the removal of them is done correctly too, to avoid long term damage to the nail plate and matrix where the nail grows from. I would advise Caroline, lots of warm oil treatments on your nails and cuticles to add extra nourishment. This involves soaking them in cuticle oil or an almond oil, or even my forever friend coconut oil, that has been slightly warmed over a bowl of hot water. Immerse your fingertips and nails into the oil for approximately 10 minutes to allow them to soak up the oil and saturate the cuticle. Remove and then rub the excess into the nail plate and concentrate on the side walls of the nailsand the cuticle area. Massaging the product in will encourage the blood supply to be pumped around and therefore help the nails to grow. Do this twice a week, ideally of an evening so that you can allow the oil to really get time to soak in. I would do this this for a month and then start to introduce a strengthening base and top coat onto the nails. Strengthening products actually feed the nails rather than just coat the top surface of the nail. So this will help to replace any vitamins from the nails.

Caroline Trett asks: My nails just peel all the time - rarely use polish but do have my hands in water often for work. They used to be the same when I had an office job. How can I strengthen them please? I would advise the same as Caroline Wabe. Especially as your hands are in water a lot for work. If the nails are peeling this is due to lack of hydration. Plunging your hands into water several times per day will actually dry out your fingernails out. That plus the use of chemicals will be a double whammy.

Wearing gloves would be the obvious answer to avoid them being over exposed to water. Fingernails swell when they are exposed to water and then later shrink as they become dry. Over time, repeated cycles of swelling and shrinking make it harder to hydrate the nails, and they begin to peel and break. A lovely oil bath twice a week would work wonders for your nails.I hope you have all found this feature of interest? I look forward to selecting some more questions next time.

Benefits of Therapeutic Massage On a recent trip away I started the first day of my holiday with a relaxing therapeutic massage. It’s not until you stop your every day rushing about that you realise just how tense your muscles have become. I mentioned to someone in conversation I had just had a relaxing massage and they replied “ what’s it like I’ve never had one?”

People say this often and it always surprises me at how many people have never experienced a professional massage before. So I thought I would try and explain it and also expand on the amount of benefits, both on a mental and physical level.

Massage can be traced back 1,000’s of years to ancient times. There are various types and different techniques, some using plain oils and some aromatherapy where essential oils are blended to give different effects. Anything from sleep enhancing to invigorating may be used. All massages will help to relax the muscles and allow the circulation to be improved, increase the lymph flow which can help with fluid retention. Massage will help to soothe aching muscles, give a sense of well being, improve the muscle tone and skin tone and texture. It aids the shedding of dead skin cell so has an exfoliating effect. Massage helps with the break down of nodules and fatty deposits and the elimination of toxins. There is a huge benefit of having massage not to mention the powerful effects of the human touch. In some countries young babies are brought up being massaged from a very early age. More recently in our country they have run special courses which teach parents how to do this correctly. It is advisable only to perform massage on babies after attending training as it is very specialised.

Lots of people think they can massage well and have not had any formal training. I feel it is advisable to seek out a therapist with the relevant qualifications. It does require skill to learn and you can definitely tell a professional! Massage is working on your mental, physical and emotional levels, so wonder no more and give it a try.

Successful flower arranging year

Thetford Flower Club continued their succesful charity fundraising year with a donation to the Multiple Scleroris Society (MS) at their recent AGM and buffet evening.

Pictured (left) Lynda Moore - Chairman and Jean Young - President (right), presented the MS Society senior physio from Norwich with a cheque for £300, followed by an informative talk to club members. A cheque for £100 was also sent to the Dogs for the Disabled as our second donation to charity.

There was a demonstration by Adele Kent at the United Reformed Church on the 19th March entitled ‘Surprise, surprise’. The demonstration was in memory of our Vice Chairman and Programme Secretary Mrs Mary Griffiths, who sadly passed away on March 1st in her native Jersey, after a brave fight against cancer. Having moved with her husband in 2000 to Norfolk, Mary became a popular flower demonstrator and area speaker, thrilling many clubs with her innovative flower arranging and interesting talks. She was succesful in winning awards at prestigious events including Chelsea and Hampton Court shows. She will be sadly missed by all her friends at Thetford Flower Club. A memorial service will be held in the near future to rember her amazing legacy. Lynda Moore, Chairman & Press Officer (01842 762919)

APRIL REPORT

Show time! Do come along to the Church on the Way on Saturday 11th April to see the best Thetford can produce in the way of daffodils and tulips. These are the mainstay of our Spring Show but there’s a lot more to see, including Easter bonnets and Simnel cakes. Viewing is between 1.30 and 3.00 and entry is free. If you would like to enter any of the classes, all details are in the club diary and non-members can find out more from our friends at Leaping Hare.

As usual, our plants are bound to be a bit early or late for the Show date. Here is where the determined exhibitor gets to work: tubs of bulbs that are showing signs of flowering too soon will be set in the cool shade to slow down their development, while those that are too slow will be moved to the sunniest corner. Flowers in bud will open quickly if they are brought into a warm house. However much you plan, it is not till you walk round your garden on the morning of the show that you will know what finally has peaked on the right day.

Up on the allotment, potato planting will be in full swing. In the old days the first earlies were planted on Good Friday, but as that date varies from year to year you are probably best to plant them as the ground warms up and you feel like it. Some experts say chitting makes no difference but it is nice to see a little growth on the tuber before it goes into the ground. I am going to try a new technique which I observed last year for potatoes. Our then-president dug trenches and set the potatoes in the bottom, just covering them and then drawing soil down over the weeks. In our dry soil this meant that the rain washed soil in and in their first weeks the new plants were sheltered from the wind. Earthing up potatoes means rain runs down into the gullies; this way rainwater will be directed towards the plant. The crops seemed good and the ground got well turned over. Worth a try – thanks, Rachel.

The club store on the London Road site will be doing brisk trade this month. If you have not visited lately, the best time is Saturday morning when coffee is available

Thetford Garden and

Allotment Club

in the club house and much chat shared. It is worth having enough canes for your runner beans and other basics before you start work. You will probably need to treat your land with some fertiliser, whether Fish, Blood and Bone for those growing organically or Growmore for a reliable general boost. There will be free advice available too!

Jobs in the garden will include attention to the lawn. Any feeding or weed-treatment is best done when there is plenty of rain and rapid growth which should be the case in April. Of course the fresh growth does mean mowing and little-and-often will give you the best results. Make sure also to prune forsythia and flowering currant soon after flowering. They can take a severe pruning and will grow vigorously with new stems which will flower next spring. If you have been enjoying the coloured stems of dogwood during the winter, now is also the time to prune them to encourage lots of new shoots.

The talk at our meeting on April 30th will be on composting and given by our own Kate Coghlan, so should be very entertaining. Meetings are at 7.30 at the United Reformed Church and all are welcome.

Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life has a unique connection to India through Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, second son of the last Maharajah of the Punjab. The museum is proud of it’s Anglo Sikh links, and was delighted when Karen-Emma White was awarded a British Council Bursary to visit Amritsar and Chandigarh as part of the Connections through Culture Programme. Alongside working with museums in the region; Karen-Emma was able to experience the colourful culture of the Punjab and build partnerships that Ancient House can benefit from. During her time in Amritsar, Karen visited the Golden Temple, Ranjit Singh’s Summer Palace at Ram Bagh, The Ranjit Singh Museum, Gobingarh Fort, the Khalsa College and the International Fateh Academy. She was also invited to visited Attari, home of national Martyrs Day. Speaking about her trip, Karen said “I’m delighted that we’ve made the connection with some of the museums and the schools. In terms of Gobingarh Fort which is undergoing a fantastic refurbishment, I hope to be able to feed into the Anglo Sikh Gallery and tell the story of Maharajah Duleep Singh during his time in Britain. I wanted to make a connection between a school in Amritsar and one here as we have a fantastic schools session, Seeking the Maharajah and this adds new dept to the engagement children working with us will experience. My experiences will also enable me to develop a new Sikhism session around visiting the Golden Temple.” Karen has plans to work with Khalsa College as they turn their study

centre into a museum open to the public. In Chandigarh, Karen spent time at the Government Art Gallery & Museum, the museum has a good collection of Phulkari embroideries which Karen hopes to replicate at Ancient House, and has plans to share some of the museum’s conservation and collection management expertise. With the help of the British Council, hopefully Seema Gera will be able to travel to England to experience first hand how Norfolk Museum Service care for the county collections.

“The level of interest my trip generated was incredible , but it was lovely to see the reaction to a museum in Norfolk taking an interest in Anglo Sikh history, although I did have to dodge a few questions about the Koh-i-noor diamond! Everyone I met was so welcoming and keen to hear about Ancient

House. I noticed that the statues of Maharajah Ranjit Singh and Gerenral Sham Singh Attariwala are very similar to the statue in Thetford, which is also a lovely connection to have.” Karen will be talking about her trip during Anglo Sikh Heritage Day at Ancient House later in the year.

Thetford Pink Ladies to complete ‘Moon Walk’

We would like to draw your attention to an upcoming charity event myself and two friends are planning to take part in this coming May 16th and for which we would ask for your support.

The event in question is the a 26 mile ‘Moon Walk’ which takes part from midnight in London in aid of Breast Cancer research.

Our team ‘Thetford Pink Ladies’ consist of Heidi Smith (43), Linsey Franklin (46), Tracy Grant (43). Wearing the charity’s trademark brightly decorated bra’s we will be joining together with Thousands of women and a few brave men to power walk a full marathon through the streets of London in order to raise money and awareness for vital cancer causes including research into primary and secondary breast cancers. Thetford Pink Ladies take part as a direct response to a dear friend’s on-going and courageous fight.
