SAFETY: Participants will be able to use words to prevent confrontations from becoming violent situations, reducing the potential injury to co-workers and those with whom they interact.

REDUCED LIABILITY: Participants will be able to handle encounters skillfully and professionally and will be less likely to generate complaints and lawsuits. Participants will be able to describe their reasoning and explain their actions according to professional principles.

ENHANCED PROFESSIONALISM: Partici-pants will be able to recognize the impact their words have on others and use language appropri-ate to each encounter. This program is designed for healthcare em-ployees whose duties may require them to resolve tense confrontations peacefully and safely, includ-ing: nurses, staff supervisors, emergency room personnel, social workers, security staff or anyone dealing with patients, family members, peers or strangers.

CONTINUING EDUCATION APPROVALS:The Oklahoma Nurses Association is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This seminar is approved for 7 hours of CNE. The National Commission for Health Educa-tion Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC) has approved this seminar for 7 CHES Category I CECH. The OSDH/EMS has approved this seminar for 7 hours of CE for EMS personnel. CLEET has approved this seminar for 7 hours of CLEET accredited continuing education. WHAT IS VERBAL JUDO?Verbal Judo enables individuals to focus on the behavior of others while maintaining safety and using appropriate presence and words to reduce violent situations.

Verbal Judo, like Judo itself, uses the energy of others to master situations. It contains a set of communication principles and tactics that en-able the user to generate cooperation and gain voluntary compliance from others under stressful conditions. These techniques are especially useful when dealing with hostile, angry, upset, frustrated or disgruntled people.

Verbal Judo teaches a philosophy of how to look creatively at conflict, offering specific, powerful, and usable strategies to resolve tense situations. Healthcare professionals will learn to respond to situations rather than react to personal feel-ings. Additionally, they will come to understand how to deal with difficult people and how to use conflict management techniques to diffuse con-frontational encounters. The course has precisely defined training goals that address concerns im-portant to both the organization and its individual employees. They are:

Joyce is a twenty-one year veteran of the

Missouri Department of Corrections, spe-

cializing in “Tactical Communication.” She

began her career as one of the first females

to work in recreation in an all male prison

and, subsequently coordinating offender

programs such as scared straight, cognitive

restructuring programs, volunteer and sub-

stance abuse programs in Missouri’s larg-

est prison. Joyce now has eleven years as

a full time academy trainer specializing in

Verbal Judo. She has also served as a consul-

tant for Mineral Area College’s law enforce-

ment academy, Missouri Police Corps and

presents Verbal Judo courses to educators,

health care professionals and public safely

agencies throughout the Midwest.
