Back to basicsReview by Vives Anunciacion

Robin HoodDirected by Ridley Scott

Y OU don’t alwaysget what you wantbut sometimes

you still end up liking theresult. Parang Philippineelections, 2010. I waspleasantly surprised thatRidley Scott's new take onan old cheesy mythturned out to be a solidmovie. Just don’t expect aswashbuckling adventure.

Based on the Old Englishfolklore of Robin and his band“merry men” who robbed therich and gave to the poor, thisversion of Robin Hood is an ori-gins movie that tells how RobinLongstride (Russel Crowe) start-ed and how he became the leg-endary outlaw with a cause.

Sa kwentong ito, Robin is oneof the archers in Richard the Li-onheart's (Danny Huston) armyof Crusaders in the late 12thCentury who assumes the identi-ty of the king's emissary afterthe king is killed in the battleagainst the French.

Robin returns the crown toEngland and witnesses the coro-nation of Prince John (OscarIsaac) as the new king.

The best parts are the perfor-mances, notably the supportcast of veterans led by the leg-endary Max von Sydow as theblind and aged Sir Walter,William Hurt as the old king’svoice of reason, William Mar-shall and finally, the tasty per-formance of (though still type-cast as bad guy) Mark Strong. It’s not too common to see anentire ensemble inhabit theircharacters very well. Ramdammo kung sino sila sa kwento.

My problem is not the slowpace, because I find that re-freshing compared to every-thing released these days whichcut too fast to hide their manyflaws. Parang may kulang ito nakung ano, na nagsasabing hindiako nabusog sa kwento, peroayaw ko naman ng extra rice.

kanyang mga kasama sa pag-tatanggol sa England laban sainvasion ng mga French. MarkStrong plays the double-cross-ing villain Godfrey.

As I’ve said this isn’t aswashbuckling adventure. It’snot Captain Jack Sparrow in Pi-rates of the Caribbean or KevinCostner’s version in Prince ofThieves. Ang kakaiba rito ay angattempt to give a legendarycharacter a more realistic, vis-ceral backstory na hindi umaasasa matinding computer effectspara bumenta. It’s almost toodifferent from the usual RobinHood movies, it could havebeen about a different personaltogether.

Medyo madaldal ito. Talkie, kasi character-based. Parangold-school movie. Hindi manganun ka profound ang kwento, sinusubukan nitong ipakita ang12th Century England in anartistic but historically consis-

Sexy star says mouthful about ex-BF Coco MartinBy Dolly Anne Carvajal

SINCE Sam Pinto and JakeCuenca are doing a TV show to-gether, is it possible that theirthwarted romance when theywere still models be rekindled?

“Jake and I have put our pastin the back seat and just mov-ing forward as friends,” Samclarifies. “We are both concen-trating on our careers, that’swhy love life is a no-no for now.We both know that love willcome at the right time. Andnow is not the right time at all.”

She added: “We are bothyoung and we want to spreadour wings first, explore oppor-tunities and see what the worldhas to offer for us. Not every-one gets this once-in-a-lifetimechance to make it in show bizso I’m grabbing it.”

But wouldn’t success bemore fulfilling if one of yourhands is holding on to someonespecial while your other hand isgrabbing all the big breaks?

Welcome MoDJ Mo is a welcome addition

to Paparazzi. Ruffa G, TitaCristy and I welcomed him tothe show last Sunday on TV5with open arms.

I’ve always liked Mo’s style. He tells it like it is. We sharethe same dressing room and weenjoy swapping Paris storiessince we both love the City ofLight.

He’s not too happy abouthow he left GMA 7. “I wrote MsWilma Galvante a letter whichI did from my heart,” he says.“It’s just too bad that the reply Ireceived was not as warm as aKapuso should be.”

No more Eenie minnie miniemoe for MO. The prized DJ hasmade his choice.

Receptive RuffaRuffa Gutierrez welcomes

constructive criticism about herTV5 special where she portraysdifferent kinds of roles that en-able her to showcase the wholegamut of emotions from A-Z.

“Whatever comments I readabout my performance serve asa challenge for me to keep im-proving my craft,” she says. “Ijust hope they get to watch allthe episodes instead of just sin-gling out my comedy role in theseries, so they can have a morecomprehensive view of my en-tire performance.”

Having worked with Ruffafor over a month now, I can tru-ly say that there’s more to herthan being drop-dead gorgeous.

All my pre-conceived notionsabout her are now gone.

Katherine’smouthful

Former sexy star KatherineLuna said a mouthful in Pa-parazzi about her ex, CocoMartin, with whom she has alove child.

“Kung kinakahiya mo anganak mo ngayon, balang arawbaka ikaw naman ang ikahiyaniya,” says Katherine. “Noongtayo pa, ako ang mas kilalanoon. Ginamit mo lang ako.Ngayon ikaw na ang sikat. Atdahil yan di lang sa galingmong umarte kundi pati na rinsa galing mong gumamit ngtao, babae, lalaki o bakla manito.”

The acclaimed star of BabaeSa Breakwater seemed on the

verge of a breakdown.

Salute to CesarMy heart goes out to my BFF

Cesar Montano for not makingit in his gubernatorial bid in Bo-hol, in spite of his pure inten-tions for his hometown.

He sent me a very touchingtext which read: “It’s a heart-breaker but we put up a verygood fight. A new chapter willsoon open for us. It should turnout better. Daghang salamat sasuporta, paniniwala at pag-mamahal. It shall never be for-gotten. Love you amiga.”

Buboy hasn’t fully recoveredyet from the tragic death of hisson, Angelo, and now this. Butknowing him, he will bounceback in no time at all.

Cheer up, keep your chin upand let’s go bottoms up, amigo!
