From the Desk of Fr. Adolfo Novio The Wise Men

Our Parish Mission Statement The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Concep on and Assump on of Our Lady

is a Eucharis c community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son, led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray,

educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life.

T here is an interes ng story in our tradi on about the three Kings a er they visited the Child Jesus. I would like to share it here. Melchior, the King of Nubia and Persia, offered gold to the Baby Jesus because He was a King. Bal-thazar, the King of Arabia, offered frankincense to the Baby Jesus because He was God. Caspar, the King of India, offered the Baby Jesus myrrh because He be-came man and would die in order to save people from their sins. When the three Kings le the Holy Family, they stayed that day in Bethlehem and told the people there and in the surrounding country about the Child Jesus and how the star had guided them from the East to Bethlehem. At night, when the three Kings were sleeping, an Angel came and warned them that they should not return to Herod because Herod wanted to kill the Baby Jesus, so they went home by another way. As the three Kings travelled through different towns and ci es on their way home, they preached to the people about the Baby Jesus, the star, and all they had seen, heard, and done. The three Kings also built a beau ful chapel on the Hill of Vaus, in India, and promised each other that they would meet there every year. A er the Ascension of Our Lord, St. Thomas had preached and converted the people of India to the Chris an faith. He then ordained the three Kings as priests and consecrated them as Bishops. They, in turn, ordained other priests and consecrated more

Bishops to serve God. St. Thomas went on to preach in other ci es and towns of India and, in me, he was martyred. The three Kings lived together like monks in Suwella for the next two years. Then, before the end of the second year, a li le while before Christmas, a wonderful star appeared above the city. By this star,

they knew that they would die soon. So, they built a large tomb in the church where they could be buried. They all celebrated Mass on Christ-mas day. Eight days a er Christmas, Melchior, who was 116 years old, said Mass and died. Three days later, Balthazar, who was 112 years old,

said Mass and then died. And six days later, Caspar, who was 109 years old, said Mass and also died. The Kings’ bodies remained incorrupt for many years, and the star appeared over Suwella un l the bodies of the Kings were moved away. For a long

me a er their deaths, the Catholic faith was prac-ced in the city of Suwella and in all the kingdoms of

the East. As the years passed, the people of India fell again into their pagan religion. As God's punishment, the bodies of the three Kings turned to dust. St. Helena (the mother of Constan ne) took the bodies of the three Kings to Constan nople where her son was the Emperor. A er the death of St. Helen, the bodies of the three Kings were taken to Milan, Italy. Some me later, Archbishop Rainald took the bodies of the three Kings to a church in Cologne, Germany, where they s ll lie today! (Source: The Society of St. Pius, Canada)

Nex Weekend’s Readings The Bap sm of the Lord, Year B

Reading I: Isaiah 42: 1-4, 6-7, or 55: 1-11 God speaks as He would to a heavenly court and promises that He will give His Spirit to the coming Messiah. We also learn about the power of God’s Word which never goes unfulfilled. The Messiah will be “a light to all na ons.” Reading II: Acts 10: 34-38, or I John 5: 1-9 This le er of John joins obedience to love. It is incumbent on us to believe that Jesus is the Son of the Father and that His death for sin brings us eternal life. The Gospel: Mark 1: 7-11 John the Bap st again exhibits his humility before Jesus as he declares himself unwor-thy to do what was normally a slave’s task: loosening Jesus’ sandal straps. “Wind and fire” describe the coming of the kingdom and precede the proclama on of Our Lord’s true iden ty.

An Act of Spirit al Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to re-ceive You in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

A ention Recently-Mar ied Parishioners Many individuals who have recently married con nue to be registered parishioners as part of their parents’ families, even if the parish is not the one they currently a end. Cou-ples who do live in the parish and want to be registered as a new family should call the rectory or register online at our parish website: www.icaparish.org.

If you have a ques on about any aspect of our Catholic Church and faith, contact us and we will answer to the best of our ability.

    262. “Why do Catholics evangelize?”

Catholics evangelize (spread the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ) because Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all na ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Ma hew 28:19-20) Some ways we bring new disciples to Jesus include trea ng others with love, living a holy life, passing on the faith to our children, suppor ng our parish and its minis-tries, and by telling others about the Lord. When the COVID-19 pandemic is over and we invite back to our churches and Parish all of our people and families, we will need to do plenty of Evangeliza on. Each of us will have to personally invite people back to the Eu-charist, the Mass, the ministries, and the worship of God. You might have to reintroduce them to the Lord who was born, died, and rose to save them. That’s the Good News!

    Our Divine Mercy Chapel

Our beau ful new Divine Mercy Chapel is now open in the Parish Center. Along its walls are these Sta ons of the Cross, hand painted and done in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. Each is a one-of-a-kind work of art and designed specifically for our Divine Mercy Chapel. They are available to honor or memorialize a loved one ($500 each). The Sta ons of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devo-

on that commemo-rates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The devo ons, or sta ons, focus on specific events of His

last day, beginning with His condemna on, and are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as one moves from sta on to sta on, recalling and medita ng on Christ's last day. Interested in honoring a loved one with one of the remaining Sta ons below? Please call the Parish Center office, (914) 961-3643.

New Chalice Veils and Burses for The Divine Mercy Chapel A Note from Fr. Sorgie

I am sure that you have no ced that everything we use and do liturgically at our Parish is done with excellence and great care. Well, now that we have a new Divine Mercy Chapel in the Parish Center, we need vestments and small liturgical items so that our newest worship space is as elegant and beau -ful as our others. I am crea ng a sacristy in the Chapel with every-thing we need for the en re liturgical year. We al-ready have three chalices and patens for when we say Mass, but chalice veils and burses are needed. A chalice veil is a liturgical linen which covers the

chalice, paten, purificator and pall in the proper li-turgical color. A burse is a s ff pocket about twelve inches square in which the folded corporal is carried to and from the altar. It is made of matching materi-al with the veil. (See photos below.) Each set of one Chalice Veil and Burse is availa-ble to memorialize, honor or thank someone in your life. Or, perhaps, offer thanksgiving to Almighty God or one of His Saints. Your message will be sewn onto the inside of the veil. This opportunity costs $200. Please call Maria at the Parish Office if you are interested: (914) 961-3643.
