Biggest obstacle I overcame in becoming a triathlete: Swimming Phobia. One day I just swam out over my head at Clearwater beach. And there I just let go, relaxed and stopped swimming and let nature do its thing. Guess what? I did not drown, nor was I eaten by a shark. Actually the more I relaxed the easier it was to float. I just floated there until my phobia was washed away by the waves. What is your greatest triathlon moment or story? Rounding the last corner before the chute at the end of IM Wisconsin 2012. I was the only one running at that moment and a volunteer with the greatest smile popped out and said “… Guess what! You are going to be the next Ironman!” and at that very moment I was overcome by all the positive en-ergy everyone in my life had sent my way. It was electric running down that cute hearing that crowd; simply price-less. What inspires me is: Seeing those who have many obstacles to overcome choos-ing to work past those obstacles, because they will not al-low fear or tragedy to define them. See Scott Rigsby, Team Winter, my single grandmother, and the list goes on. My favorite part about triathlon is… The community. I have more friends now then I ever had in college. These new friends are tall, short, all color shades, slow, fast, rich, poor, young and above all fun. While we all may be different, we all want the same thing; we want the best for each other. My personal victories are always cele-brated and while my personal “downs” are also shared, the downs are always fleeting because someone is there to pick me up.

Guilty Pleasures: 5 Guys Philosophies/Quotes/Mottos: “Dominate” As I was leaving the house for my first ever ½ marathon Son 2 caught me at the door and looked me in the eye and said “Dominate Daddy”. I tried to explain that I was not going to win or do that well and… He just cut me off and said it again; “Dominate Daddy… Dominate”. I hugged him and said I would, not thinking much of the encounter. Fast forward and I am at mile 11 of the race in December right before Christmas. I really wanted to stop as I was feeling all sorts of twisted. To add insult to injury, at that very moment, I saw some dude dressed up as the Ginger Bread Man way ahead of me. A half marathon was so easy for him, I guess he could dress up for it and run the whole thing in costume. Ac-cording to the tale, he was the Ginger Bread Man, and I had to “run, run, and run as fast as I can to catch him.” Then it hit me. “Dominate.” My son had asked me to dominate not others in the race, not to race for a podium, but something simpler and more powerful. Dominate the voice inside me that wants to give up. So if I wanted to catch the Ginger Bread Man I had to run the fastest I could. I kept reciting the word and it became my man-tra for two more miles. And yes, I caught him. And along the way I understood the true meaning of what Son 2 was trying to tell me. To this day he does not recall that conversation but it is our family motto now. “Dominate”

What drew you to Team Psych? The logo of course was eye catching but the spirit embod-ied by Mark and Nicole seemed like one I wanted to share. When I saw Mark at all the youth Tri’s all dressed up like pirates, I knew I wanted to join this bunch.

This was my 2nd Clermont Great

Floridian Ultra Distance Tri. The

last time I raced here I got my butt

handed to me - 16 hours and

change. I felt like I had trained

both smarter and harder this year.

Beautiful morning race day, but 65

degrees, and I was freezing waiting

to start after body marking. A big

20mph wind blowing from the

north across Lake Minneola made

for a bit of a chop. But the water

temp was 75, much warmer than

standing on the beach. On lap 2 of

the swim the sun was rising and it

was beautiful through my new

goggles. Out of the water in 1:22 -

a little slow but I was amped and

having fun. Out onto the bike and

immediately felt the headwinds go-

ing around the lakefront. Mile

22 and there is Sugarloaf. Ugh.

You're never quite ready for it. It's

such a tough climb, and such a

rush screaming down the other

side at 40mph! Great bike course -

3 laps of about 37 miles

each. Where it was flat we had

headwinds. Where we had tailwinds

we had monster climbs. Off the bike at

8:30 (7:20 bike split). I was NEVER

so happy to get off my bike. Out onto

the run. Going back to ultra marathon

training days I've never strayed too far

from run 5 min, walk 1 min. It's a bit

of work being a slave to your watch,

but it works for me and I'm used to it.

(That 1 min walk helps with lactic acid

build-up, and makes recovery the next

day much nicer). But no matter what

you do it's a long day and the ultra dis-

tance will find you. At mile 20 of the

Page 15: Team Psych Weekly Newsletter Nov 05, 2012

run the tank was empty. I drank

lots of chicken broth and water

out on course. At mile 23 an aid

station had de-fizzed coke - a

miracle cure. Off I went again. 3

miles later I came through the

finish in 14:20 - very happy with

a sub 5 marathon split. 5th over-

all in 50-54 age group. Clermont

GFT is one fantastic race. It's

close, no need to ship your bike.

It's small and half the price of

other ultra distances. The volun-

teers and staff make the day one

that you won't forget even after

you forget the pain! You finish

The GFT and you're tougher than

If I wasn’t a Registered Nurse, I would be a Police Officer , specifically on the SWAT team (dream job) Passions outside Triathlon: Animals, I have four rescued dogs Key Race or goal for the season: I really want to do one Half Iron one of these days, problem is getting the time to train and the confidence to try. Athletic history before triathlon: Really none at all; I ran a 5K at the 2008 Gasparilla when I happened to see it advertised and was amazed that I actually finished and ran the whole thing and it started from there. Triathlete for how many seasons: 4 Currently my bike is a: Cevalo My dream bike is any of the speed concept Treks, research shows they’re the best, would have to work a few extra shift though. Philosophies: There are no do-overs in life Biggest obstacle I overcame in becoming a triathlete: Without a doubt swimming; especially in open water; being from NJ going in the Atlantic once a year maybe up to my waist was the deepest; never actually swam before doing my first tri. What is your greatest triathlon moment or story? Finishing my first St. Anthony’s, I cried. When I first moved to Fla. We bought a sailboat and happened to be an-chored in the basin at St. Pete during St. Anthony’s one year. We walked around all the triathletes and I remember saying how inspiring all these people were who were able to do something like that and there was no way I would ever think or be able to do it. A few years later, I did, it was an awesome feeling What inspires me is: health, the feeling of accomplishment and encouraging and watching other attain their goals. My favorite part about triathlon is… Running, though biking always seems to be my best and the beer at the end is always a good thing! Guilty Pleasures: Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and Publix icing W hat drew you to Team Psych? Speaking with Chrischelle about how everyone in the group was supportive fun and friendly and wanted to have a good time along with training and accomplishing goals. And of course the mascot. I always get com-ments on my top when I go to races.

The 2013 St. Pete Beach Classic is

holding a competition among inter-

ested area clubs and their support-

ers! Here’s how it works – When

one of your members or supporters

registers to run in any one of our

competitions (Half-marathon, 10K, 5K, Duo, Marathon Challenge or Kids

Dashes), they will have the opportunity to select the name of a participat-

ing club from a drop-down menu. The club with the most entries will re-

ceive a $250 donation from the Classic!! To include your club in the com-

petition, please indicate your desire to participate and you will be added to

the drop-down list!! Best of luck and thank you for your support of the St.

Pete Beach Classic!! Al Alan P. Johnson

Here's how it works - when you register for any of our races on line they'll

be an optional drop down question as to which club you support. Click

there, select Team Psych, and continue with the registration. When on-line

closes (1/13/13), I'll down load the entries and the club with the most votes

wins!

Anyone who enters can vote for your club, they don't have to be a member

- so go out and recruit supporters!

I'm committing to a minimum of $250 donation for the winning club, but I

hope to raise that and possibly give a runner-up prize if I get enough clubs

to participate. Right now I have 4.

I'll have Team Psyche in the drop-down this afternoon.

Thanks for participating, best of luck!!
