I wanted to give you a synopsis of what I do in my practice. I am a retired ER physician who now does anti-aging medicine which en-compasses bio-identical hormone replacement for men and women. I do spider vein ablation. I will soon have my eMatrix facial rejuvenation machine delivered and will begin doing fractional sublation procedures to remove scars, wrinkles, and discoloration t the face. I also do diet medicine, and I have a physical medicine and rehabilitation part of my practice. I have physical therapists, massage therapists, and a gym at each of my two offices. I have associated triathlon trainers as well. I have a chiropractic physician, Dr. Johnathon Hancock with me as well and he does fitness, and nutrition. We also have a detox program that we are just launching now through Cytohealth, and I will be speaking on this with Dr. Del-rae Messer on 5-7-11 at the Iron Man Store. I also do Botox and dermal fillers along with Paula Hatzilias, RN, my nurse…..William Meadows, MD
Dr.Meadows,
What can you do
about these flames?
Do they make me look
old?
What are the advantages or disadvantages of bilateral breath-ing and its effect on bouy sighting and course navigation in the varying distance requirements?
Todd Knowlson
Everyone should be able to bilateral breathe even if you don’t deploy it in a race. If you do a substantial portion of your training this way you will have a more bal-anced stroke. Now in a race setting you may not bilateral breath but ideally you should be able to switch seamlessly from one side to another if the circumstances call for it. For example, most races start as the sun is rising and If you are stuck breathing on the side that the sun is on then your swim may be all over the place and you will go blind by the time you exit the water….ok at least that’s what my mamma told me. Then there is the “stalker swimmer”. You know the one that you just can’t get rid of that has an uncanny ability to time his/her stroke at the exact moment when you go to take a breath. ….for 1000 yards. Wouldn’t it be con-venient to just turn your head and breath off the other side? If you are comfortable with breathing off both sides this will be a no-brainer. If you aren’t able to do that then you better hope pepto bismal was a race sponsor. It is also easier to sight the buoys when you are breathing to the same side. In other words if you are supposed to keep the buoys to the right of you then it behooves you to breath off the right side, at least periodically. As far as the different race distances go the longer the swim, the greater the possibility that you will get off course since the buoys may be more spread out. This is not always the case but you should be prepared in any distance to breath off both sides if necessary. All that being said I am guilty of one sided breathing during races….all the time. Would my swim times be faster if I could bilateral breath? Maybe..maybe not. During the last summer Olympics I watched to see how the swimmers breathed and a lot of them only breathed off one side (sometimes it seemed they didn’t breath at all), granted they were not sighting buoys but I guess that was all the permission I needed to continue my normal patterns. I have learned to train bilaterally but have just not been able to translate it to a race pace. I think you have to figure out how you swim most efficient and be comfortable enough to use both sides when neces-sary.
