NAPLES Bonita Springs resident Joe Maggio is preparing to bicycle

from Naples to Key West as a fundraiser.

Maggio is a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in

Training. He will be riding July 23 and 24, pedaling about eight to nine

hours each day in completing the 265-mile trek. He will stop over in Mi-

ami for the night of July 23 before continuing to Key West the second day.

The 42-year-old Maggio is a home health aide for VITAS Innovative Hos-

pice Care in Naples, where he helps cancer, dementia and stroke patients,

among others.

He will be biking in honor of friends Julee Gonzalez, a non-Hodgkins leu-

kemia survivor, and Kendra Evola, a leukemia survivor. He is trying to

raise $3,500 for the event, and for the Nations Triathlon in Washington, D.C., in September, when will be doing

the Nations Triathlon for the first time. As of Tuesday, he said he had $1,300 in donations.

Ive been involved in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said Maggio, a part of the Team Psych triathlon

team out of Tampa and the teams March Athlete of the Month. Ive seen firsthand the funds help people.

Maggio started running four years ago and completed his first triathlon last year. Im very happy, he said. I en-

joy it. I got hooked on it.

He is cycling 60 miles during the week and 50 to 70 miles over the weekend. He swims 30 to 40 minutes three or

four days a week and runs 20 to 30 miles a week. Cycling is his strongest event; swimming his weakest.

He completed the St. Anthonys Triathlon in St. Petersburg in April and the Siesta Key Triathlon in June. The lat-

ter is one of the events in the Publix Family Fitness Weekend series in which he has been participating. He fin-

ished fifth in the 40 and older Clydesdale (200 pounds or more) group at Siesta Key.

For those who donate $25 or more to the Naples to Key West and Nations Triathlon causes, Maggio is offering a

charity drawing with raffle prizes from area businesses. For example, sponsor Naples Cyclery has donated bike

shorts and a shirt.

2005 Felt S22, (superlite) tri bike. It is a 50cm aluminum frame . The bike has carbon forks, seat post and aerobars. The components are shimano. I just put on a new drive train.
