READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Monday, March 23 Is 65:17-21; Jn 4:43-54 Tuesday, March 24 Ez 47:1-9, 12; Jn 5:1-16 Wednesday, March 25 Is 7:10-14; 8:10; Heb 10:4-10; Lk 1:26-38 Thursday, March 26 Ex 32:7-14; Jn 5:31-47 Friday, March 27 Wis 2:1a, 12-22; Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Saturday, March 28 Jer 11:18-20; Jn 7:40-53 Sunday, March 29 Ez 37:12-14; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45 TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — As the prophet Samuel anointed David with oil, the Spirit of the L rushed up-on David. 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a Second Reading — You who were once darkness are now light in the Lord. Ephesians 5:8-14 Gospel — The man who had been blind from birth pro-claimed: The One called Jesus made clay with His saliva, anoint-ed my eyes with it and told me to wash. John 9:1-41

LIGHT “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real blindness in the me of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is car-ried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that s ll per-vades our lives, communi es and world be dispelled by the Christ Who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world. J. S. Paluch Co.

THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION—MARCH 25 For centuries, March 25 has been cele-brated by Catholics as the “Feast of the An-nuncia on.” Mary’s fiat—“I am the servant of the Lord, let it be done to me as You say”—brought our Savior into the world. As the first disciple of Christ, Mary shows us that we must listen to and do God’s will. Prayer and ac on, therefore, go hand in hand. As followers of Christ, we must make me to talk to and listen to Him in prayer. Examining all that we do, or simply “living” in the light of our prayer, is essen-

al. Living with a heart open to God’s will has enormous implica ons. Different peo-ple will realize that God calls them to differ-ent things. For an adolescent, it may mean resis ng peer pressure to take part in drinking or unchaste ac vity. For the single adult, it could require offering personal me in service of a needy person. A business-man may find that honest and fairness requires a certain course of ac-

on. A married couple could realize that they should have another child. A frightened pregnant woman may understand that she needs to ask for help to resist the tempta on of abor on. The sick person might have to accept his illness and join his suffering to that of Christ. Doing God’s will is not always easy. We usually have our own plans for our lives. It is good to have plans, but never at the expense of our growth in rela onship to God. Like Mary, we must trust that God’s will is the best for us and our world. Let us follow the example of Mary and call upon her to help us open our hearts to say “yes” to God!

March 22, 2020 Vol. XXXVI, No. 12 4 A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Saint Paul gives us a wakeup call. As stewards of the light of Christ, we are to reflect that light with the help of the Holy Spirit. If Christ’s work has transformed and illuminated our lives, there should be a change. The light of Christ’s ac ve presence should be at work in us. And as the light shines within us, we take on the proper es of that light and we shine too. We are used by God to shine the light of Christ in the lives of others. A challenging Lenten reflec on: Is the light of Christ shining in our hearts? Is the light of Christ reflec ng out from us to others?

March 22, 2020 Vol. XXXVI, No. 12 6

March 13, 2020

To the Clergy, Religious, and Laity of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Today, Governor John Bel Edwards issued an Execu ve Order asking people to refrain from a ending gatherings of more than 250 people in an effort to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and closing schools for the next 30 days. It is important for us as people of faith and ci zens of Louisiana to cooperate with the Governor’s order for the health and well-being of our community. Therefore, I am dispensing the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from the obliga on to a end Mass on Sunday effec ve immediately through the next 30 days. We are closing our Catholic schools for the next 30 days in coopera on with the execu ve order. These dates may be updated as needed. I highly encourage those who are elderly, sick, experiencing symptoms of illness or who are at high risk of illness to not a end Mass these weekends. The virus has been contracted with serious issues by those 60 and older. Those in that age group must take seriously the cau on to implement “social distancing”. For those who cannot and choose not to a end Mass, I remind you that 11 am Sunday Mass from St. Louis Cathedral is broadcast live on WLAE-TV and live-streamed at theDailyMass.com and theDailyMass.com Facebook page. We will share the live stream of Sunday’s Mass on the Facebook page of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans and my own Facebook page. There are also other opportuni es for televised Mass via Catholic TV and EWTN. Let me be clear that I am not an cipa ng or encouraging any changes in parish Mass schedules. Please be advised that all previously released guidance for Mass remains in effect with some modifica on: • Please empty the Holy Water fonts; • Please refrain from holding hands during the “Our Father”; • Please extend the sign of peace without physical contact; • Encourage Eucharis c Ministers to prac ce good hygiene by using an alcohol-based hand sani zer before and a er

distribu ng communion; and • Holy Communion will not be offered from the chalice to the congrega on. For those parishes with upcoming confirma ons, those will go on as scheduled. Please be in touch with me with addi-

onal ques ons about these liturgies. In prepara on for this order to close schools, which is now in effect for the upcoming 30 days, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools asked that schools begin to create con ngency plans to prepare for this reality. What these plans look like for individual schools will vary from site to site. I encourage you to work coopera vely and pa ently with your school leaders as these plans unfold. Furthermore, I am taking this opportunity to advise parishes that while they may con nue their Parish Friday Fish Frys at the pastor’s discre on, they should refrain from hos ng a dine-in op on in favor of a take-out op on only. Parishes hos ng St. Joseph Altars should give strong considera on to the Governor’s Execu ve Order and make plans according-ly. I ask that those parishes planning a public serving of a meal in conjunc on with their St. Joseph Altar consider sus-pending that prac ce this year. Please remind volunteers to prac ce good hygiene throughout these events. This is a very fluid situa on and these guidelines are subject to update as necessary and as directed by state and local officials. As we face this unprecedented public health challenge, may we call on the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor as we have done over many years to intercede for us. Let us pray, Lord, we live in fear and uncertainty as we experience the Coronavirus. Be our strength and our hope. Give healing to those affected and protec on to all of us. We ask you to calm our fears and trust in You. We also ask the prayers of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, St. Joseph, and Blessed Seelos to strengthen us in this me of need. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Wishing you God’s blessings, I am, Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans
