From the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please welcome Father Beat from the organization called UNBOUND. This organization assist peo-ple in developing countries to live a life more in keeping with their human dignity. Of course, they could not do the charitable works they do without the assistance of people like yourselves. Please listen to Father Beat’s message and respond as gen-erously as you can. Father Juan Pablo is helping out in Durant, Okla-homa this weekend. He will be returning this Sun-day evening for the St. Toribio Meeting. The time for the Carnival is upon us!! It will be next week-end, May 25th. As you can imagine there are many details in organizing such an event that includes a walk for hundreds of people through the streets of Tulsa (four miles), a parade of horses, games for children, food galore, music, raffle, and clean-up. Father Juan Pablo is the principle organizer and so is very busy at this time. We are all very grateful for his diligence and hard work. The walk will be-gin at 8:00 a.m. from St. Francis Xavier parish and those who are walking will arrive here at our parish around 10:30 a.m. Then, there will be an outdoor Mass at 11:00 a.m. followed by the festivities of the Carnival. We always hope that many people will participate. The celebrations will continue un-abated until 10:00 p.m. This coming Wednesday is an historic event for our parish as we will be celebrating a ground breaking for the construction of the new chapel of St. Toribio Romo and his fellow martyrs. The ground breaking is planned in conjunction with the actual Feast Day of St. Toribio Romo and his fel-low martyrs. Bishop Slattery will be here to cele-brate the Mass at 7:00 p.m. that evening and fol-lowing the Mass we will have a ground breaking ceremony and then a reception. I know it will be

during the week but this is such an historic occa-sion that perhaps you will find a way to fit it into your busy schedule. Let us be thankful to God for this day. It has been a long time in coming!!.

Wednesday is also graduation day for our eighth graders here at the School of Sts.Peter and Paul. There will be a Mass at 8:30 a.m. followed by a breakfast for the eighth graders. In the evening there will be the actual graduation ceremony. Con-gratulations to each of our eighth graders and may the Lord bless and assist you as you go forth from here. Don’t forget us!! Our last day of school for the rest of the kids will be May 23rd. It has been a good year and we are grateful to God and to our benefactors for making the school apostolate possi-ble. Let us remember to pray often for our bene-factors and for their families. The actual construction of the chapel will begin very soon and we hope that it will not be terribly disruptive. I don’t think that it should be since the rest of the Church will remain as it is. We will be tearing down part of the awning leading out of the Church, however because the new chapel will need to be built there. I will keep you informed as usual. Take care and have a great week. Sincerely and gratefully yours, Father Timothy Davison

Join us once a month for a discussion of these works of fiction largely written by Roman Catholics, and all dealing with the central themes of faith, the human condition, incarnation, sacra-ment, redemption, the struggle between good and evil, and sin and grace. A brief introduction to the author will be followed by a moderated conversa-tion on the book and its insights on faith and life. Read the book and join the discussion .

Anonymous THE WAY In today’s Gospel reading we hear part of Jesus’ discourse at the Last Supper as reported in the Gospel of John. “I am the way and the truth and the life,” Jesus assures his disciples. At that time they did not understand what he meant; they wanted easy answers. “Just show us the Father,” Phillip begged. But the first and second readings show us how the early church came to understand Jesus’ words. The amazing growth of the church led them to select seven men to do the works of service needed with so many new members. The followers of Jesus had grown in such numbers that Peter could exclaim in his Letter over the fact that Christ, the “rejected stone,” was now the corner-stone on whom the salvation of the world rests. Down to the present day, he is truly the way, the truth and the life. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians have no sacrament of “confirmation,” but they have always had the cus-tom of richly anointing the newly baptized in myron, or sacred chrism. They also give infants a taste of the Precious Blood, thereby doing away with any notion of “First Communion” in later childhood. In the West, although we too have an anointing with chrism for the newly baptized, for centuries we have normally reserved a second anointing for the bishop, sometimes many years after baptism. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the fact that in early times the bishop was the ordinary person to officiate at bap-tism, not the presbyter (priest). The bishop did it all, from plunging the catechumens into the font, to pouring chrism over them, to immediately celebrat-ing the Eucharist. When bishops began to cede some of their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism. Thus it was decided that the solemn post-baptismal anointing, the laying on of hands, and the prayers for the gifts of the Holy Spirit were to be detached from infant baptism. So, to the present day, we have two anointings after baptism: one by the priest and the other normally by the bishop. By the fifth century, the word “confirmation” had sur-faced to refer to this second anointing. Rev. James Field, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
