From the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today is the First Sunday of Lent. I hope that we will each be given the grace to truly open our hearts to the Lord’s invitation to repent and do pen-ance, to pray and to do works of mercy. Let us pray for each other that we each have a truly fruitful Lent in preparation for Easter. Pray too for our five catechumens who are preparing for the Easter Vigil with great anticipation as they will be regenerated in Holy Baptism, Confirmed in the Spirit and re-ceive the life-giving Body, Blood, Soul and divin-ity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on that holy night of the Easter Vigil. This year I have decided that trying to have three Holy Thursday services, and three Good Friday services is too much. The idea of having only one Holy Thursday enables me to have our whole com-munity assembled together and afterwards engage in a time of quiet mediation on the Gift of the Holy Eucharist. When we multiply Holy Thursday ser-vices we have to cut short the time of adoration in order to accommodate the other Masses. And so this year we will have one Holy Service and it will be at 7:00 p.m. in Latin with hand-outs provided in Spanish, English, and Latin so that everyone can easily follow along. I will wash only 12 feet as op-posed to 36!! After the Mass of the Lord’s Supper we will have the opportunity to pray before the Eucharist which will be reposed in the new St. Toribio Chapel. On Good Friday our schedule will be a little more taxing as we will have the Spanish Stations of the Cross at 10:30 a.m. outside, the English Stations of the Cross at noon inside the Church, at 1:00 p.m. the Latin Good Friday service followed by the Novena of Divine Mercy and thenin the evening at 7:00 p.m. we will have the Spanish Good Friday service. As for the Easter Vigil we had decided about three years ago to take turns having the service in different languages. This year it will be in Latin. The catechumens will gather in the morning of Holy Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for part of the ceremony of their Baptism. Everyone is welcome to attend. Then, at 9:00 p.m.

the ceremony of the blessing of the fire and candle light procession to the Church and the rest of the ceremonies of Holy Saturday night will commence. The catechumens will receive the rest of the cere-mony of their baptism and then their confirmation. Later on in the Holy Mass they will receive the Blessed Lord for the first time. The Easter Vigil is the vigil of all Vigils. It is the most important litur-gical service of the entire year. It is a long service lasting about three hours and so it is not a good idea to bring little children. It is really more for adults because it is late and lengthy. I hope that our community will gather together: English speakers and Spanish speakers as well as the families who regularly attend the Latin Mass. There will be spe-cial music and the Liturgy will be celebrated as a solemn high Mass with priest, deacon, and sub-deacon. Please don’t forget too that during the Lenten sea-son we gather on Fridays at 5:30 p.m. to pray the Stations of the Cross in English and then eat a Lenten meal giving a donation to the poor in the basket provided in the cafeteria. At 7:00 p.m. we have the Stations of the Cross in Spanish. I hope that everyone will take part in this Lenten devotion and realize the value of gathering together during the Lenten season for prayer in common. Very soon (Feb. 25th) we will have the blessing of the new chapel of St. Toribio Romo. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Flores of Brownsville, who is a personal friend and a great speaker. Bishop Slattery will also attend. Following the Mass there will be a reception in the gym and cafe-teria. Those who have been specially invited will be seated in the gym and cafeteria. If the weather permits we will also have some tables and chairs set up outside in the back parking lot for the over-flow. We are hoping that everyone can be accom-modated. Padre Briones and Padre David are help-ing with the receptions. Feb. 25th is the day that St. Toribio was martyred in Mexico in 1928. There-fore the date of Feb. 25th was chosen as the date to bless the new chapel dedicated to St. Toribio and his fellow martyrs. It has been a great challenge to build the chapel and many people made great

sacrifices to see it built. I wish to thank all those who assisted in this endeavor. The chapel is not completely paid for yet but I am confident that if we continue to donate each week we will very soon have it handled. Once the chapel is blessed the Blessed Sacrament will be reserved there for prayer and starting in March we hope to initiate perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in that little chapel which is ideal for quiet or com-munal prayer before the Lord of Heaven and Earth. Anticipating the 25th of February as a very important date for our community I would urge each of you to make a Novena to St. Toribio Romo starting this Wednesday, Feb. 17th. The Novena can be made privately in your home or here at the Church. All you really need in order to make the Novena is the intention that you will of-fer to St. Toribio and perhaps the prayer of the ro-sary to accompany it or any other prayer that you wish to offer. Perhaps once our chapel becomes operational we can have a Novena prayed publicly every month from the 17th through the 25th. we will also be initiating the prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours both morning and evening every day in the new chapel. In the morning the Liturgy of the Hours will be prayed in English and in the evening in Spanish. Mr. Erick Bell is taking responsibility for organizing this effort. Please remember that Holy Mass is offered each morning in Latin at 7:00 a.m. If anyone would like to buy a missal so that they can more easily follow along with the readings and prayers we have some available in the little book store. I would be happy to instruct you on how to use the missal. Once you buy the missal you will not have to purchase an-other as it will be all you need to follow along with every Mass during the whole year. I know this letter is getting a little long but I have one more thing to announce. That is, Trivia Night on Saturday, February 20th. It will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please call the school office (918) 836-2165 for more information. I hope you each have a great week and a renewing Lent!! Sincerely yours, Father Timothy Davison
