DIVINE WISDOM

The Lord's message, through Moses, was to "take no revenge and cherish no grudge . . . love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, "Great in theory, but not always realistic!" Then Jesus in today's Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we're tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the "real world." Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest--without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc..

A WORD FROM THE DEACON Soon Lent will be upon us. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are, of course, the traditional spiritual disciplines of Lent. The Stations of the Cross, while useful for meditation throughout the year, have traditionally held a special place of prominence during Lent.

The Stations are an ancient devotion of the Church dating clear back to the 4th century when the emperor Constantine erected the Church of the Holy Sepulcher at the site where Jesus’ tomb was believed to have been. Processions of pilgrims to the church, especially during Holy Week, began soon after its completion. For more than a thousand years, Catholics referred to the devotion as the “Way of the Cross.” The number of stations varied widely, with some manuals of devotion listing as many as 37. Depictions of the events described in the Stations did not start becoming common in churches until Pope Innocent XI permitted the Franciscans in 1686 to erect such displays in all their churches. Pope Benedict XIII extended that privilege to all the faithful in 1726. Five years later, Pope Clement XII allowed all churches to have stations and fixed the number at 14. As you can see, this devotion – while staying true to its original purpose – has undergone much development and adaptation over the centuries. This Lent we are going to be praying the Stations of the Cross on WEDNESDAY EVENINGS, beginning at 7 p.m. We will also be praying the Stations on Good Friday. Various individuals will preside at the Stations and various formats will be used. We would like to add some prayers and extended reflections to help make the meditation more meaningful. As we begin preparing for this holy season, please consider participating in the Stations of the Cross. D B

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Jesus challenges us to be generous in our love. Keeping score, getting even, holding grudges, being resistant and hating enemies are not routes to holiness and the fulfilling life. Draw on God’s limitless love for you to go the extra mile, seek the great good, love your enemies and see what miracles God can work in your life! You cannot out give God!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

St. Vincent Parish is beginning a Prayer Shawl Ministry. If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, please consider joining this wonderful ministry. People involved in this ministry knit/crochet shawls which are then given to console those who are grieving, comfort those who are ill, and bring hope to those going through difficult times in their lives. Knit in prayer, the shawls are then blessed by Fr. Norm. Two meetings are scheduled for those interested in learning more about this new ministry: Tuesday, February 28, 9:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. in the Scullen Room. If you would like to attend, please call Ellen Green at 330-867-1364.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In brushing up for "Catholic Jeopardy," it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It's for a chair: Saint Peter's chair in fact. After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in today's Syria, the place where we were first called "Christians." From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair ("disciple" literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter's chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter's chair above the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athanasius from the East. High above it is the alabaster window of the descent of the Holy Spirit. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

STEM Learning in Action at St. Vincent de Paul Parish School!

One of the most important aspects of a STEM education is incorporating Problem-based learning into our teaching of the academic standards. What this means in the classroom is that the class is given a real-life problem to solve. Then using their skills learned in their academic subjects of math,

science, language arts, social studies, etc., the class will work to find solutions to be used for that real-life problem. For SVDP Parish School children, these fantastic learning experiences are often created in collaboration with public agencies in our city to help us expand our learning into the community. Here is a summary of one of our current projects: Representatives from the Akron Zoo came to our fifth grade class to present a problem for us to solve. Their problem is that Forest, their North American porcupine, cannot go outside for enrichment, because of his wandering nature. He is unable to explore outdoors due to his unique characteristics, like long, spiky quills, which make it difficult to handle him. His keepers have little means to keep him secure when in an open area, especially one containing any type of trees or shrubs, as Forest is a skilled climber. Therefore, we are being asked to help find a solution to safely handling Forest, so that he can participate in outdoor enrichment and have a better quality of life. We were specifically chosen for this task because of the standards that we cover in fifth grade Science. We are currently studying about how energy is transferred in ecosystems, as well as habitats, adaptations, and food chains, to name a few concepts. After we understand these general concepts, we will then research these ideas in the context of a North American porcupine. We hope that our knowledge of how and where Forest’s species lives naturally, as well as his characteristics, will help us to design a solution to allow Forest to live a more successful life in captivity. We even hope that our design might go further to help other North American porcupines with similar enrichment limitations in other zoos and sanctuaries. We are excited to take on this challenge!
