Humbly welcome the word
that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
— James 1:21b
TRADITION Tradition is long human memory set, not in stone, but in
human interaction. Without this active memory, the bonds
of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Commu-
nities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After
participating in events, celebrations, and even small ritu-
als, we remark about how good it is to gather and remem-
ber. Today’s readings remind us of foundations laid
deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about
God’s will to relate to us—to be our God as we are called
to be God’s own beloved people. Today in three readings
and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that cre-
ate us as a people and the obligation and responsibility
that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine.
I am yours. These are God’s words that created a people
as surely as “Let there be light” created the sun and moon
and all the stars. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AUXILIARY St. Vincent parishioners,
It is so wonderful for our group to see all of the cans
and packages of food that you bring to church on the
weekend. We are all heartened by your generosity!
Every Monday morning, we sort through, distribute or
shelve your "gifts" and then deliver to folks who need
them. Thank you for caring, sharing and also for sacrific-

ST. VINCENT ALTAR SOCIETY 300 CLUB HISTORY OF THE 300 CLUB: The first drawing of the
300 Club was April 4, 1973. This Club was established
as a way for the Altar Society to make money to help the
parish and was started with the approval of Fr. Corrigan.
Today we still have some of the first members. During
the past year, the 300 Club donated $3,500 to the Fr.
Corrigan Tuition Assistance Fund and $500 to the St.
Vincent de Paul food pantry We also purchased a new
vacuum for the church, hosted a pizza party after the
church cleaning, provided fresh flowers for the altar
each week and hams for funeral luncheons, We thank all
of our members for their generous support. Your captain
will be contacting you in the next few weeks for the new
year, which starts in August. You do not have to be a
member of the parish to join. WE HAVE MANY
OPEN NUMBERS IN THE 300 CLUB THIS YEAR.
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FILL THEM!! Please
call Marilyn McCafferty at 330-836-3924 for your lucky
“Irish” number and all the details.
A New Fundraiser
We are, as every parish, always in need of money to con-
tinue the work of proclaiming the Gospel and in meeting
the many demands of charity.
We have instituted a new program that will be a simple
fundraiser that all of you with computers can help with
and which is as easy as pie. Goodsearch.com has pro-
vided over $ 11 million to various charities since its in-
ception.
Every time you search for something like the location of
a store or the name of an actor, a penny will be credited
to the parish. Simply go to goodsearch.com and click on
“Find a cause to support” and enter St Vincent and scroll
down to find St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Akron,
Ohio. You may then sign in (not absolutely necessary)
and whenever you search you’ll be automatically con-
tributing to our parish.
You will also find coupons available for other online
shopping (called GoodShop) which will also contribute.
We are now signed up here at St. Vincent. I can’t think
of a time when I haven’t found what I’m looking for. It
works, please consider it.
Thanks,
Fr. Dennis McNeil

2015 FIRST STEP PROGRAMS CONTINUING EDUCATION REGARDING MAR-
RIAGE AND DIVORCE IN THE CATHOLIC
CHURCH
Attempting to pick up the pieces of one’s life after the
tragedy of divorce is complex and demanding. One of the
significant issues that a person faces is their place in the
Church. Does the Church still care about me even though
I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive
communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I de-
cide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal of
the Diocese of Cleveland is continuing to offer its very
successful First Step Program, in order to help individuals
deal with these questions. The Church’s teachings on mar-
riage, divorce, and remarriage are often misunderstood.
This program is offered to help everyone; especially those
who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic
teaching in these areas.
Everyone is welcome to:
• Deepen their knowledge of the Church’s teaching on
marriage.
• Learn about the Church’s ministry to the divorced/ sepa-
rated in the Diocese.
• Hear the true facts about the annulment process and how
to submit a case.
• Discover a path to healing after divorce. The remaining
schedule for the general meetings in 2015 is:
• Tuesday, September 15th, at Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish, Cuyahoga Falls, at 7 p.m.
• Tuesday, October 13th, at St. Ambrose Parish, Bruns-
wick, at 7 p.m.
We encourage everyone to come to heal, come to learn,
come open to the spirit. Note: The Diocese of Cleveland
no longer requires any fees for this process. For more in-

Saturday, we would love to have you. Just come at 9:30
a.m. to 93 Kent Street in Akron and we will put you to
work. Not available on Saturday? We could use some help

and organizing the furniture bank, some office stuff and of
course cleaning the facility during the week. Also, if you
have a truck and would like to pick up our orders at the
Akron Canton Regional Food Bank, we would love to
have you. You don’t have to be a St. Vincent de Paul
member to help. Please pray about this and let us know if
you can help. Please call Jim or Cathie Perusek at 330-467
-5762 if you would like to help.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Today Jesus teaches us what really matters are the
intentions of our hearts. Bad intentions lead to angry
outbursts with name calling and put downs. These are
violent acts that “defile” our relationships. No one wins;
everyone loses. Examine your heart and open it to God’s
love and grace.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s discussion of the permanent diaconate and its
restoration will lead inevitably to questions about
“deaconesses,” something certainly under study as
historians and liturgists research our tradition’s treasures.
Today, there are some settings in which women are
entrusted with pastoral administration and have been called
to preach and to officiate at weddings. Lay people can lead
the funeral rites and daily prayer. Yet the question of
ordination to the diaconate for women is complex. Yes, we
have had deaconesses in our tradition. We know that they
assisted with the baptism of women, and that ministries
were entrusted to them. We also know that some early
church councils took care to call them lay persons, and
specifically forbade ordination. What confuses the picture
is that they may have been the wives of deacons, who, like
the wives of priests and bishops, were expected to serve the
community as exemplars of the Christian life. Long after
deaconesses disappeared, their ministry was treasured and
carried on by religious women in consecrated life. It is
clear that one of our greatest treasures is the vibrant
engagement of women in ministry over the centuries. What
is not as clear is where our questions will lead. —Rev. James Field,
