St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, January 3, 2021
I offer thanks to you as a wonderful parish family on this Feast of Epiphany, when we remember the Wise Men from a far off country who came to
worship the Christ, without even knowing all that He would do for the sake of the world.
I am grateful to all who do their part to enhance the ways we worship together, especially in this season. We commend the various choirs, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, servers, ushers, greeters, decorators, poinsettia contributors, and members of our Worship Commission. What a blessing to have people who work the camera that our various Masses may be live-streamed. Our gratitude goes out to our parish commissions, organizations, and individuals who guide us as we follow the Way of Jesus Christ. Thankfully many of you have provided gifts, grocery items, and prayers for those in greatest need at this time.
We, the Pastoral Staff, are appreciative of the Christmas cards, remembrances, and gifts we have received from you. I may have to go to a "chocoholic" 12-step meeting soon, but it is worth it!

WINTER/LENT RETREAT OPPORTUNITY
Walsh Jesuit is again offering its Spirituality Program for Adults (SPA) this winter. It is a wonderful Lenten Opportunity. The SPA is a group retreat experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, held over a period of 9 weeks. Meetings are held once a week for approximately 2½ hours at the school. Retreatants are expected to pray ½ hour each day; materials for prayer will be provided. The Spiritual Exercises have inspired countless men and women to a deeper spiritual growth, especially a deeper relationship with Jesus. The Winter/Lent sessions are being held on Tuesday evenings, January 19 – March 16, 2021, from 7 – 9:30 pm. Registration deadline is January 24, 2020.
For more information or to make a reservation, go to our website at www.walshjesuit.org or contact Dolly Gingo at [email protected] or 330-338-4549.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society and the
Women’s Auxiliary along with the St. Vincent Knights of Columbus want to thank you for your continued support of our Thanksgiving and Christmas food and gift card delivery program. Your continued support allowed our teamwork to assist more than 80 families making sure they could put food on their tables over the holidays for themselves and their families. Special thanks to St. Vincent-St Mary and Hoban high schools for their tremendous support. Please consider making a gift to support our continued work by including a check to the St. Vincent de Paul Society care of St. Vincent Church. Thank you again for caring!
What is the Mass? The Second Vatican Council called the Eucharist the “source and summit of the Christian faith,” which, in other words, means that all we are as Catholic Christians is encapsulated within the Mass. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. (CCC 2182)
So, what does the word “Mass” mean? For any of us who remember high school Latin, the word is derived from the closing words of the Roman Rite: “Ite, missa est” (“Go; it is the dismissal”). A long time ago, missa simply meant “dismissal.” We now know that this dismissal has come to mean something much more and it is not about being first out of the parking lot! We are sent forth on a mission. We are to take what we have received in our celebration, filled with the Holy Spirit, and bring it to all we meet. We are fed by the Lord at Mass and need to go forward with renewed strength and conviction in our ability to make a difference. It is good to remember that the Mass not only unites us as our own parish family of Saint Vincent de Paul, but universally with people all over the world who join in this very same Eucharistic celebration. That is both amazing and awe inspiring. We are part of something much bigger than we imagine – not forgetting that the Mass also joins us supernaturally with the angels and saints in heaven. NEXT WEEK: Have you ever heard someone say that they don’t get anything out of the Mass? We need to talk!
Gospel Reading
Matthew 2:1-12
The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage.
Family Connection
The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is
thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving
of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not
exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast
of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your
Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this
tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of
the best gift you have received. What was it?
What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the
thought that went into it, or the person who gave
it to you?
Read today’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12. The gifts
of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—
have come to be understood as symbols of
Christ’s royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering
and death. They are special because in giving
them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to
be: our Savior. We pray that we will
acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all that we do
and say.
Conclude by singing together “We Three Kings” -Loyola Press
*****************************************
The story is out! Jesus Christ, Light of the World has been born to dispel the darkness that covers its people. God’s glory appears in human form. Life on earth will never be the same again! Father God, the star that led the Magi to the stable announced to the world that its Savior was born. Today we live in a world that is still covered by darkness, and still needing to make that journey to the stable door. May our lives reflect your light day by day, as we seek to serve where you have placed us. That we might be the means through which others can encounter Jesus Christ. Amen.

“TIME”
The old year is past, a new one has just begun, and we are all now one
year closer to eternity. For many people this past year, time was no more.
One moment they were in time; the next moment they were in eternity.
Time is a two-sided coin, one side despised and wasted during life,
the other priceless and unattainable at the hour of death.
God has given us these days to work out our salvation, but how well do
we use them? How often have we observed a man in idle pursuit? If we
were to ask him what he is doing, he would reply: “Oh, I am just passing
the time.”
I remember an old song of many years past. It was called “Standing on
the Corner Watching All the Girls Go By.” Are we just standing on the
corners of life watching the days of our salvation going by unused?
To quote Saint Alphonsus de Liguori:
“O time despised during life, you will be ardently desired by worldlings at
the hour of death. The thought that they must very soon appear before
Almighty God, to give an account of their lives, fills them with untold
confusion and anguish. They will ask for another year, another month,
or another day to settle the accounts of their conscience, but they will ask
in vain. To obtain a single hour they would give all their wealth and
worldly possessions, but that hour shall not be given.”
Let us therefore exert ourselves to the utmost to accomplish the work of
our salvation while there is still time. Do now, what, on the day of
Judgment, you will then wish you would have done. For at the moment of
death, the time of grace will have passed, the time of justice will have
come.
