MAY 2019 - MAY 2020

ARTIST STATEMENTMASUD SANDERS
I am a proud Gooreng Gooreng/Munanjhalli man born in the United States. Now living in Brisbane, my creative arts practice is mural painting using different media, mediums and techniques. I like to create a range of different style including but not limited to contemporary street art, abstraction and semi abstract/figurative paintings.
I was always a creative kid and liked to draw. I remember loving anything that had to do with art, cutting, pasting etc. All through grade school I took art as a subject, picking up street art as a hobby until it started getting serious in recent years.
Masud Sanders from Everton Park won Vinnies QLD Reconciliation Action Plan Art Prize. Masud’s piece, titled ‘Until The End’, reflects Vinnies positive impact on society and its contribution to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTOF AUSTRALIA’S TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS
St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland (Vinnies QLD) acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land, throughout Queensland and across Australia.
The Society’s members, volunteers and employees pay our respect to the Elders of the past, the present and the future and recognise their spiritual connection to land, sea, animals and plants; for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and the hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
5
A MESSAGE FROM THE STATE PRESIDENT AND THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The St Vincent de Paul Society is a world-wide organisation with more than 150 years of service to the poor, and 125 years in Queensland. As a lay Catholic organisation, we aspire to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.
At the national level, the St Vincent de Paul Society has committed in its strategic plan to, “implement a Reconciliation Action Plan with measurable targets for the participation of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Society, so that we may work together to address injustice and dispossession”. The Queensland arm of the organisation is now committed to putting that strategic goal into action.
In Queensland, we are determined to create a meaningful Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and implement a program of change to help the Society become an organisation that is more honouring and welcoming of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We are fortunate to have the guidance of a committed group of people, including several Indigenous employees, to work on the RAP with Reconciliation Australia.
In moving forward, we commit to champion the Reconciliation Action Plan throughout the organisation and we will continue to embed reconciliation into our services.
Throughout our organisation at the beginning of meetings of members, we say a prayer to help us in our work. Part of that prayer asks the Holy Spirit to help, ‘…the St Vincent de Paul Society be a place in which the First Peoples of Australia are welcomed and deeply respected’. Our hope is that Society members, volunteers and staff will embrace the rich culture and history of Indigenous Australians, and that, “…we listen and learn from each other as we walk together in a profound spirit of reconciliation”.
Kevin Mercer, Chief Executive Officer
Dennis Innes, State President
6
Vinnies QLD shares a vision of an Australia in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, languages, philosophies and cultures penetrate the marrow of our institutions, our organisations, our communities and the lives of all Australians. As a lay Catholic organisation, we are mindful of the sacrament of reconciliation where we ask for forgiveness for sins committed against God, and our neighbour. When our members gather for meetings, we ask for reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, in the following prayer:
‘Holy Spirit, we pray that the St Vincent de Paul Society be a place in which the First Peoples of Australia are welcomed and deeply respected. May the Elders be blessed and honoured. May this sacred land of ours truly inspire us to come together as one. Renew our hearts as we heal one another and build a future based on mercy, justice, faith, hope and love. May we listen and learn from each other as we walk together in a profound spirit of reconciliation.’
The Society is committed to supporting people through their life journey, ensuring human connection and service provision that enriches lives and empowers communities. We will do this through person to person engagement and exemplary service provision that enriches their lives and contributes to strengthening the communities in which they live. Our Strategic Plan 2017-2022 aims to better equip members and employees to be more effective and capable to deliver this vision. With this plan we also acknowledge that the Society in Queensland as a whole must make a greater commitment to play our part in the reconciliation process. It is now time for us to match our spiritual commitment with practical steps because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are a big part of the people we help.
The first steps of our journey have been the formation of a Diversity Working Group (DWG) whose purpose is the development and implementation of our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). There is a shared goal within the group to ensure our RAP will become embedded within the Society culture and to never be tokenistic. Organisational RAPs across Australia are already driving social change and improving economic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Accordingly, with the massive reach of Vinnies to all parts of Queensland, it is our belief that we have the capacity to support further change.
To inform our RAP, a survey was sent to all volunteer member groups (Conferences), Conference Presidents and organisational managers to gauge what they are currently doing in their relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This survey also allowed feedback on their hopes for reconciliation and what they would like to see included in the RAP. It was evident from the results that as an organisation we need to strengthen our partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, increase the number of Indigenous members, volunteers and employees and include them in our decision making. We plan to repeat this survey in time, this is just the start of our journey.
OUR COMMITMENT TO RECONCILIATION
