Baptism Preparation classes can be completed at either St. Hilary (Beth Rado, 330-867-1055) or at St. Sebastian (Cathy Sivec 330-836-2233 ext. 134 or sivecc@stsebastian.org). Call either parish for times and registration details. Proof of attendance should be presented to St. Vincent Church prior to the baptism. Please call the rectory to schedule baptisms. Baptisms are scheduled for the 2nd/4th Sundays of the month after 11 a.m. Mass (12:30 p.m.) Marriages: Couples intending to marry should call at the rectory at least SIX MONTHS prior to the marriage. It is required to have copies of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation records if these sacraments are not received at St. Vincent. Wedding times on Saturday are at 2 PM. Parish School of Religion (PSR) Pre-School - 8th: Classes are September through May. Classes are held in St. Vincent Grade School on Sundays from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (Becoming Catholic): Presentations begin in September: For information, call 330-535-3135. Hospital/Sick/Shut-in Visitation: Please notify the Rectory when a parishioner is hospitalized, shut-in, or ill. A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

Have you ever been to an Easter vigil? Many people during my years as a priest have asked, “Why is that Mass so long?” Yes, it is at least two hours. We baptize new members into our Catholic Christian faith and welcome others, already baptized, into full communion with us. The service begins at 9 p.m. in order for us to gather in darkness and process into

the church following the Paschal Candle, the Light of Christ. We are reminded that the world and our lives can seem dark at times. As Scripture tells us, we are to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus – he is the Light who guides us through all life circumstances, including our struggles, pain, and ultimately death itself. A joyful sung proclamation states, “This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant”.

We rejoice with our new Catholic Christian members their coming into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and with all of us, the Body of Christ. Each of us renews our baptismal promises – rejecting sin that can cripple our souls. We proclaim our belief in a loving God, who Fathers us, Redeems us from sin and death, and fills us with his Spirit we call Holy.

In the early church the Easter vigil began at dusk and went through the entire night until the breaking of the Dawn, the symbol of Risen Life in Christ. May we be so grateful for the Lord’s real presence in our lives and for the ways he draws others into his love, that we will

want to celebrate the Easter vigil. Many people have also told me through the years that participating in the Easter vigil was a high point of their Catholic Christian life in Christ. They have remarked that the time “flew by” because they were in the flow of God’s love.

The Easter vigil is the culmination of the Sacred Triduum – three deeply sacred days beginning with the Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday evening, continuing with the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Friday and preparing us for the Easter vigil and for the rest of our lives. We join with Jesus Christ in his washing the disciples feet, feeding us with his very body and blood, loving us to the point of death, and raising us up to a resurrected life beginning right here and now.

Fr. Dave Halaiko is a licensed guide for tours in Israel. A program of Holy Land pictures and Scripture lessons is being offered here at St. Vincent’s on Tuesday, April 18, and Tuesday, April 25, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Scullen Room. The first week is an introduction to the land of Jesus, his early years, and his Galilean ministry. The second week takes us to Jerusalem, Holy Week, Easter, and the spread of the Church into the Roman Empire.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week's journey of faith "The Three Days of Easter." The origins of many of our observances, including today's blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ's passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today's joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp. --Rev.
