An Easter Message from the Pastor Having An Easter World View

Life is complicated. It is made up of so many different elements. Every day something new is thrown at us. It may be a major crisis such as death, the loss of a job, falling in love, the birth of a baby; or maybe just something small, like not feeling so good, or a bit of snow, or the common cold, or any one of a million other things. In each of our lives there is so much to

contend with all of the time. In the midst of all of the chaos of our lives we need something that will allow us to remain centred and in focus. We need something that is so powerful that everything we do or experience will find its meaning

and home in that central reality. Our search for that centre in our lives can be over once we discover, embrace and celebrate the mystery that Jesus

Christ is risen and alive. The person who is the hope of the universe lives and is present in our lives. We have a deep need for Easter. We need to know there is light and hope no matter what our experience of the present time is. We can't control a great deal of what happens to us. In some way we shape our lives as much by our reactions to events, as by the

events that we ourselves initiate. We need to know that life is a greater reality than death; and when I use the words 'life' and 'death', not only do I mean actual life and death, I also mean all of those little deaths that we experience and all

of those little resurrections that also come into our lives. The Resurrection of Christ is the greatest sign that God could give to us of how powerful God is. Death is not the end. Sorrow is not the end. Depression is not the end. Pain is not the end. Christ's life, and the promise and hope that comes from his life, is stronger than anything that ever existed or could exist.

Each of us looks at life in a certain way. We call this our world-view. Some people look at the world through economic eyes. Everything they see is seen in terms of dollars and cents. How much does this cost? What is that worth? How much

will I gain or lose if I make this decision or that one? Other people see the world through the eyes of pleasure. Will this object or person bring me pleasure or pain? How can I get out of doing something that is not to my total liking?

Others see the world through the eyes of fear, or the eyes of status and position. Today we should ask ourselves, is there an Easter in our world-view? If so, what place does it stand in? Is it

somewhere in the far background or off to the side? As Christians we are urged to place the resurrection squarely in the centre of our world-view. In fact, we are asked to actually use the Easter event as the viewer through which we see life.

We talk about seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses. We should be talking about seeing the world through Easter coloured glasses.

Let's be perfectly clear about this. I am not saying that we ignore the pain and suffering that is all around us. We are not to be like ostriches burying our heads in the sand, trying to escape from reality. Our model, Jesus was not one who

escaped from reality. In fact, his facing the reality of his own particular situation was the cause of his suffering and death – and it could be the same for us also. No, we are not to be escapists.

But neither are we to be so caught up in the difficulties of life that we are not able to see anything else but darkness. As Christians with a Resurrection world-view, we can face the dark side of life, but always with the assurance that in the end,

whether it is in this life or the next, life will win out. Christ's victory over death is one that will last for all eternity. As we go about our daily lives we know as Christians that Jesus is risen, and holding himself before us as the wonderful and greatest sign of hope that could ever be offered. Pain, suffering and death have been conquered once and for all. This

is why in our daily lives it is so important to nurture this friendship with Christ. When we have a positive and hopeful community of friends, they can help to give us some of their hope. They can help us to gain perspective on what is going on

in our lives. This is what the CHURCH is suppose to be and do; hold out to us the promises of hope and new life. As a faith community and parish, I hope we have been able to do this for you. On behalf of the Parish Team,

Parish Pastoral Council and myself, I wish you and your families a Holy and Happy Easter. Please join us again often, as we celebrate together in faith the greatest gift that God has given each one of us!
