THE WEDDING AT CANA

The focus in the gospel story is less on the marriage than on the

symbolism of the abundance of wine at the marriage feast. The 8th

century BCE prophet, Amos, had looked to a future time when the

mountains would drip sweet wine, and the hills flow with it, a time when

God would restore the fortunes of God’s people (Amos 9:13-15). An

abundance of good food and the best of wines is the image of future

salvation deployed by another 8th century prophet, Isaiah (Isaiah 25).

Today’s gospel suggests that these prophetic dreams come to fulfillment

in Jesus of Nazareth. Those who listen to his word and follow his in-

structions become agents of an extraordinary transformation. This “sign”

reminds us to rejoice in the life-giving nourishment we receive every day

from the God-given fruits of the earth. The mother of Jesus features

significantly in the Cana story. She is attentive to the integrity of the

celebration and lets her son know when the wine gives out. This provides

the opportunity for Jesus

to speak of his “hour”: it

has not yet come. Jesus

addresses his mother as

“Woman”. He will

address her in precisely

the same way when the

“hour” of his death and

handing over of the

Spirit finally comes. This

“woman” believes in him

and invites the servants

at the marriage feast to

obey his word. While

Jesus performs this first

“sign” that leads his

disciples to faith, the role played by this faith-filled woman casts her in

the role of “witness to the light” and proclaimer of the Word that brings

life.

Training will be provided and the first session will be held in Toowoomba on Wed 6th Feb. (See flyers on the tables). Transport can be arranged. Interested people are welcome to sit in with an experienced RI Instructor until they feel confident enough to take a class on their own. All material is supplied. In the Gospel of John, this is the first public act of Jesus and it is the woman, his mother, who initiates this first display of his divine origins when he ‘let his glory be seen’. Her total trust that he will respond to her observation helps to explain why we look to Mary as a model of faith and discipleship. Jesus takes the symbol of the old rituals of Israel—the water for ritual cleanliness—and transforms it into something new. This is a recurring motif in John. Another recurring theme is that of ‘the hour’ of Jesus. In John’s gospel, the ‘hour’ will not be finally fulfilled until the supreme moment when Jesus shows the full-ness of his love for both his Father and for all people; the mo-ment when he is ‘lifted up’ on the cross. This story is about much more than the performance of a miracle at a wedding feast. In the performance of this sign, Jesus reveals something of the power and glory of God operating in and through him, and it is this revelation of the glory of God that has a trans-formative effect on his disciples, so that they come to believe in him. The miracle at Cana announces the richness of the gifts of God that Jesus has come to dispense, and for the disciples and for all who come to believe in Jesus, this is a life-changing event.

REFLECTION

In what ways has your encounter with the richness of God’s

bounty been a life-changing experience?

How do you now experience the abundance of God in your

life?

The Summit Online

First Reading Isaiah 62:1-5 As the bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so will your God rejoice in you. Responsorial Psalm Ps 95:1-3,7-10 R.v3 R. Proclaim his marvellous deeds to all the nations. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“The last key in the bunch is often the one

to open the lock.”

Prayer For Rain Almighty and everlasting God, you have given

us this earth to care for and delight in.

Look with mercy on our need for rain for our

parched land. We pray that life-giving rain will

soon fall. We pray for those suffering from the

severity of this drought—people working on the

land, and those in business who depend on

farming and grazing for their livelihoods. Fa-

ther, help them to know your love and care, and

to bring their burdens to you. Guide all those

who are seeking to

provide help and bring healing

in the midst of so much pain.

We ask these things through

Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
