EXTENDEDDEALINE!St.Mary’sParishChurch,Battersea,seekstoappointfourChoralScholarsfortheacademicyear2016-17. One scholar per part (SATB)will be appointed and the scholarships are open to bothmale and female candidates. Countertenors are most welcome to apply. Scholars are paid anannualhonorariumof£1,000plusgenerousextrafeesforweddings/funeralsasavailablethroughtheyear.MusicatSt.Mary’sMusicplaysanintegralroleinworshipatSt.Mary’s.ThechurchhasaveryableandenthusiasticrobedSATBchoir,supportedbyfourpaidChoralScholars(SATB),whichperformsmusiccoveringavastvarietyofmusicalstylesfromtheRenaissancetothepresentday.

Recent performances include a full scaleproductionofMozart’sRequiemwithorchestrainwhich the choral scholars took leading rolesassoloists.TheScholarsandChoirofSt.Mary’shas also worked with renowned composerSimonBainbridge,premieringhisworkPsalm23written for an evening celebrating the newlyrestored 1st edition 1611 Bible at St. Mary’s.Otherworksperformedrecently include:Finzi’sLo,thefull,finalsacrificeandVaughan-Williams’FiveMystical Songs,movements from Bach St.John Passion and Handel’s Messiah withorchestra. The choir has also recentlyperformed Duruflé and Fauré’s Requiems. The

choral scholars have significant roles in all music making as well as these largerservices/performances.Thechoiroftensingsforservices/concertsatSt.Mary’sandothervenuessuch as Southwark Cathedral and Exeter College, Oxford. The Choir of St. Mary’s have alsoperformedonBBCRadioLondonaspartoftheRoyalWeddingcelebrationsin2011andincludedconcertperformancesofnewlywrittenworksfromtheChoirbookfortheQueen.IntheSummerof2015,theOrganandChoralScholarsjoinedsomemembersofthechoironatriptoSéesandLeMans,FrancetosinginanorchestralperformancesofDelalande’sDeProfundis.

A typical SundayEucharistwill contain a voluntarybefore andafter the service.Alongwith thehymns,thechoirnormallysingananthem,amotet,apsalm(AnglicanchantorResponsorial),aswellasamasssettingwhichisnormallycongregational.Oncepertermthechoirperformachoralmass, such asMozart’sSpatzenmessewith instrumental accompaniment. The 1st Sunday of theMonth is supported by the First Sunday Band. There is no expectation of commitment orattendancetotheFirstSundayBandfortheanyofthechoralscholarsonthefirstSundayofeachmonth.The2ndand4thEvensongsarefullchoralevensongswhichallowthechoirtoexploremorerepertoireincludinglargeeveningsettingssuchasStanfordinGandHowellsCollegiumRegale.

The church is a particularly beautifulGrade I listedGeorgian building on the banks of the riverThamesandisaninspiringplacetowork.Theorganisa1991SaxonAldred,twomanualtrackeractioninstrumentwith27speakingstops.Thereisalsoanew5’5”KawaiGrandPiano.Scholarsareable to use the church for practice, concert performances, etc. subject to agreement with theDirectorofMusicandbookingwiththeParishOffice.

TheScholarshipsTheChoralScholarswillhelptoenhanceandsupportthechoirofSt.Mary’s.Aswellashavingtheopportunity toexpandtheirknowledgeof repertoireandtechnique, thescholarswillbeabletoimprovetheirabilitiesthroughavastarrayofmusicmaking.Thescholarshipwillserveasasolidfoundationforthoselookingtoseekcathedral/university/collegiatechoralscholarships,aswellashelpingtoconsolidateandexpandskillsofthosewhomaybestudyingatorwhohavegraduatedfromuniversityorconservatoire.Under thedirectionof theDirectorofMusic,TyroneWhiting, and theOrgan Scholar, eachChoralScholarisexpectedtobepresentatallrehearsals and services during term time, aswellasmajorFeastDays (Advent,HolyWeekandEaster,AscensionDay,etc.)andconcertswhichmay fall outsideof term.Althoughnotexpected for Midnight Mass/Christmas Day,scholars will be expected to attend all otherAdvent, Christmas, Holy Week and Easterservices.4weeks’holiday ispermittedduringthetermofthescholarship.The Choral Scholarswill also havemany opportunities for solo performances through the year.Therearealsotworecitalseries,whichruneachyear,aswellaschoralconcerts.Scholarsareableperform at least twice yearly in each of the series, and masterclasses often occur to aidpreparationofthese.ItishopedtheChoralScholarswillhaveathoroughinvolvementinthemusicmakingandlifeofthechurch.TypicalWeeklyTimetableWednesday 19:30-20:45 ChoirRehearsal

This list isnot intendedtobeexhaustiveandtheChoralScholarsmaybeaskedtosingatotherservicesonoccasion.Someoccasionalworkmanagingthechoirlibrarymayberequired.PersonSpecificationThis position is open to all ages and stages of career (undergraduate, postgraduate, etc.) andprovidesanexcellenttrainingtothosewhoarelookingtosupporttheirmusicstudiesandimprovetheirabilitiesasachoralsingerand/orsoloist.Applicantsshouldhaveexperienceofchoraland/orsolosingingandhavestrongabilitiesinsight-reading. Previous experience of church music is highly desirable but not essential. Good self-managementandtimekeepingisalsonecessary.Aboveall,apassionforhighstandardsofmusicmakingandchoralsingingiscrucial.Itisalsoexpectedthatscholarswilltakepartinsomewideraspectsofthechurch’slife.

HonorariumandFeesThehonorariumforeachChoralScholarpositionisnowworth£1,000perannum.Manyweddingsandfuneralsthroughtheyearwillattractextrafees(c.£65each).Vocallessonsandothertrainingmayalsobeavailablethroughouttheyear.ApplicationandAuditionEXTENDED DEADLINE: The deadline for applications is will remain open until a suitablecandidateisfound.Pleasesubmityourapplicationassoonaspossible.Auditionswill be scheduled at amutually convenient time on a first come first serve basis.
