Ministry Corner—Human Concerns In the early 1970s, the Archdiocese created guidelines for Parish Councils and committees. Human Concerns encom-passes Direct Services and Social Justice, including Educa-tion, Advocacy and Empowerment. Human Concerns started at that time, and a coordinating committee was created to begin to listen to parishioners and look at the needs in the parish and beyond. Sub-committees were created to respond to those

needs. Catholic Social Teaching provides guidelines to apply when evaluating issues.

The list of ministries has grown and changed over the years. The coordinating committee contin-ues to listen to needs and supports the various ministries. It is difficult to say how many volunteers are involved, as some people work in more than one area. The majority of the ministries are in Direct Services, for example, the various meal programs in three areas. The amount of time de-pends on the task. Funds are obtained through envelope collections to cover the cost of these meals.

From a justice perspective, if we talk to meal guests, we can find out why they need this resource. Who has the power to help people get on their feet? Are there ways the parish could assist?

Another area in Human Concerns is the House of Correction. During one prayer service, a man spoke for 2-3 minutes. He apologized for being there, had broken a law, was sentenced to the House of Correction, then needed people to take time to assist with his spiritual needs. Very hum-bling.

A special “Thank You” to all who are involved in any way through Human Concerns. If you would like to get involved, contact Lynn Binder at 414-421-9171. Also, visit the Ministry Fair this weekend to learn more about Human Concerns. -Dave & Thelma Walker

Bonjour! Invitations have been mailed, and reservations are now being accepted for this year’s Parish Auction, “Springtime in Paris,” set for Friday, April 24. Please plan on joining us at Boerner Botanical Gardens for a night of fun, as you step through the streets of Paris with your fellow parishioners! You can register for the event by going online at http://aesbid.com/ELP/STALS20, or sending your registration to the Parish Office.

We always look to our great family of parishioners for donations for the many raffles and silent auction items. Please consider donating (new items only) tools, technology items, liquor, home items, sporting equipment, fun group classes and parties, adventure events or gifts for the cook. Gift cards (any denomination) and bottles of wine are also a great donation. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office or brought to the table in the Gathering

Space. If you need a donation pick-up, please call Doris Jome at 414-529-4739, or Sue Ruedinger at 414-731-0537. Thanks for your continued support!

Faith And Beauty Corner Watch for our participation station in the Church Gathering Space. You will have an oppor-tunity to share a picture or de-scription of how you best experi-ence God’s presence. Drawing

sheets will be available for our young mem-bers of any age, or just drop us a comment to let us know where God is in your day. Artwork and reflections to be shared with the commu-nity, as we explore how faith helps us see beauty, and beauty helps us find faith. Join Dr. Ed Block, as he leads a discussion of Willa Cather’s classic, “Death Comes for the Archbishop”, a story of spiritual and physical heroism on the American frontier. This special

book discussion will be open to a larger group of parishioners, including teens and young adults. Books are available through the Public Library/Amazon. Several copies will also be available through the Parish Library.

Doctor Block is Professor Emeritus, English Dept., Marquette University. Register by February 25. Call 421-2442 x 225. No Fee.

Called For More The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has undertak-en an initiative in 2020 entitled “Called for More.” This is funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, and its goal is to pilot a new process for supporting priests/parishes to further thrive their ministry. As part of this goal, each adult parishioner is asked to com-plete a short 15-minute survey in late Febru-ary, 2020. As we get closer to the survey date, more information will be available. We thank you in advance for your participation!

Laudato Si -"Praise Be To You," From The

Care For Creation Committee Pope Francis’ encyclical letter continues to challenge us. "Replace con-sumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing." Each month, we will again offer "One Simple Act" suggestions to incorporate in our daily lives. Two weeks of doing something can make it a habit.

From Pope Francis' encyclical letter: "Each community can take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence, but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its fruitfulness for coming generations." ONE SIMPLE ACT BUY AT LEAST ONE ORGANIC FOOD ITEM! Organic agriculture is a safer choice for the environment and your family, because organic growers don't use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that degrade air and water quality and threaten the health of workers, farmers and communities.

St. Alphonsus Food Pantry For our next collection, February 22 & 23, we ask you to please include soup, tuna, cereal, and canned fruit for the Food Pantry.

Look for future bulletin updates for specific food items to bring. If you have any questions, please contact the Food Pantry at 414-514-4400. Thank you for your support of the Food Pantry.

Food Pantry Collection Dates for 2020: March 28 & 29; April 25 & 26; May 30 & 31; June 20 & 21; July 25 & 26; August 22 & 23; September 26 & 27; October 24 & 25; November 28 & 29; and December 26 & 27.

School Scene State of the Union Address On Tuesday, February 4, President Trump made his State of the Union Ad-dress to the nation. In all the upper grade Social Studies classes, we reviewed and discussed what this yearly speech was about using various news sources and the student's own telling of what they watched of the speech. Then, they were arranged in groups of two or three to create a slide presentation of three positive examples about our country, as well as two areas of needed improvement that they would share in their own State of the Union speech. It has been quite interesting to hear the stu-dent's perspective on this topic, as well as generating some good discussion about our nation.

Dear Friends in Christ, As we move finally toward spring, there are a number of buildings, grounds, and maintenance events on which we can update you. As you know, we have been working for almost a year on the installation of new parking lot lights around the property. While the new lights are in place, there was an issue with the lines underground in the main church lot after installation. The lines themselves are old, and time took its toll on them, with one entire line melting down underground and shutting down a portion of the new lot lights. The replacement of that line is ongoing and should be completed soon. The necessary dig-gings in the lot will then be repaired, and paving work finished when the weather breaks. Many thanks to Mike and Les, our faithful custodians, for picking up some extra duties after one of the cleaning per-sonnel left St. Alphonsus for another position. I am working with both of them to ensure a smooth transition. I mention again the plans for the upcoming spring season: work will hopefully begin on restoring the courtyard between the PMC and the school, additional projects related to restrooms throughout the property will be undertaken as fi-nances permit, and necessary exterior repairs and updates on the PMC, school, and church will be ongoing. As usual, if you would like to assist in any way with these or other projects,

please don’t hesitate to contact me at the Parish Office, 421-2442, ext. 213, or via email at [email protected]. Wishing you a blessed Lent and all the joy of Easter, I remain yours devotedly In Christ and St. Alphonsus,

Jacob Majstorovic

Question Of The Week Theme: God’s Commandments are a way of life. Question for Youth: In your own words, describe what the spirit of God’s law is. Question for Adults: Have you considered that laws are made with love? Do you accept God’s love through his laws?

Encourage Deeper Understanding Of Scripture 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time People are not property. We cannot exchange them at will nor simply use them for our own designs and pur-poses. What does the word “commitment” mean to you? We can begin to understand its meaning by looking at some synonyms: dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyal-ty, faithfulness, fidelity, and bond. Commitment is pri-marily about relationship, and Jesus is all about relationships. How our lives affect others, how we treat our brothers and sisters, how we resolve conflict, and how we view the vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings on obeying the commandments, murder, reconciliation, mar-riage, divorce, and adultery all stem from the sacredness of commitment. All of this has a God connection.

We can easily see one another as interchangeable and dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way. What works today may not be what I want tomorrow. We search and search for the right thing only to find our hearts still restless in the end. Is real happiness achievable this side of the grave? Sometimes we expect too much out of others and want our relationships to fill a hole that we must figure out how to fill ourselves. Any seasoned married couple will tell you that their love for one another changes as time passes. Even though the understanding of romance changes as life changes, the dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, and fidelity all remain and even deepen.

Some relationships can be hurtful, and God does not want us to live with abuse or pain. Also, how a relationship develops is sometimes out of our control, and we become the victim of someone else’s decision. But we can’t be self-focused in our relationships and see them exclusively as self-fulfilling ends. We are companions on life’s journey with varying depths of relationships being enjoyed by all who are with us along the way. We have the freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely, with right judgment and thinking. ©LPi
