Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Listen Heedfully

The invitation to come and satisfy our hunger and thirst in Christ offers a great comfort to us who sometimes ache with longing for God or feel emptiness when we want to feel full of God's love. This longing is God's gift and call to us to withdraw from all the noise and racket of our lives and our world and pay attention to the quiet voice of God within us. How do we respond to such a loving invitation? By pay-ing attention, by stilling ourselves; not by struggling and striving to make some spiritual experience happen, but just by sitting still and lis-tening for God's delicate promptings. Our desire for prayer, even if we feel our prayer to be too distracted and ineffective, is effective because the call is from God and our response is a willingness to hear and be fed by God's holy word to us.

All Ate And Were Satisfied Jesus fed the five thousand men, "not counting women and chil-dren" (Matthew 14:21). We can assume, since women were among his most faithful followers and they tend to bring their children with them everywhere, that the women and children outnumbered the men-a vast crowd indeed! Yet how were they fed with five loaves and two fish? Matthew notes that first, "[Jesus] said the blessing" (Matthew 14:19). He gave thanks to God for what was given: an act of thanksgiving that is always transformative. This act of praise and thanks transforms our bread into his body and blood, and conforms us to Christ for the life of the world. The desire for God is a gift that reflects God's desire for us. It doesn't matter if we feel that our prayer is ineffective, or if we are comforted or not by our images of God. God is working in us by the gift of that desire, and our will to respond is our consent to God's call. Come to the water; come to the feast!

Treasures From Our Tradition As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural con-struction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome's former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city's only glory. The Ro-mans wanted "good order" not only in their civic life, but in their lit-urgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled.

Ordained in 1970, he served as a faculty member of Niles College Seminary and spend seven years as associate pastor at Mary Seat of Wisdom Church. Fr. Jenks most recently served as pastor here at St. Al’s. Previously he was pastor of Ascension Parish in Oak Park where he directed adult retreats and formation days. He has also worked at St. Mary of Vernon, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Our Lady of the Wayside.

What Do We Want To Pass On To Our Children?

The Benedictine Sisters, who run St. Scholastica Academy in Chi-cago and have spent their lives educating teenage girls, recently wrote down what they hope to call forth from the girls who receive an education at their school. In the coming weeks I’ll continue to provide examples of what the sis-ters came up with, including our 2nd quote: "She is free from en-slavement to passing fads . . . " The challenge for parents is to feed our kids' spiritual hunger with what will satisfy them for the long haul: to make sure each child knows that he or she has a destiny greater than anything a TV com-mercial can call them to. Help them set their sights high.

Handicap Parking We currently have five handicap parking spaces near the handicap ramp and one at the back of the church. There are parishioners who need these spots because of some physical problem. You could be ticketed if you are parked illegally. Please respect the signs.

Cheerleading Sign-up

St. Alphonsus, St. Patrick & St. Cyril are looking for girls for their Celtic Football Cheerleading Squads. We are looking for girls for the JV (Grades K thru 4th) and Varsity (Grades 5th thru 8th). No experi-ence necessary. Must attend school and/or religious education classes at either parish. Registration will take place at St. Alphonsus Church Base-ment on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 from 6:30 pm 8:30 pm. Join us for a “Family-Fun Day” at the Races!!!

The Family School Association of St. Al’s/St. Pats is sponsoring a social event on

Sunday, August 24, 2008. The Family Day theme at Arlington Race Track is

“Sand Art Creations.” There will be FREE projects for the kids along with

pony rides, face painting and a petting zoo – ALL DAY!!!!

We will be seated in the Million Room with

a 2 hour, all-you-can-eat buffet and 4 hour Open Bar. Gates open at noon

and the event is expected to end at about 6pm. We will be having bus service

(for a minimal additional fee) from Lemont for those who might be

interested. The tickets will be sold on a first-come,

first-serve basis – so get them while they’re still available. The tickets will be

passed on to you at our cost. (Adults - $58, Children - $24)

Counseling By Fr. Rohrich Counseling services are available by Fr. Bob Rohrich at the DePaul Center, 212 Custer. Appointment on weekdays are: 10:00 and 11:00 am in the morning and 5:00, 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 pm. Father Bob counsels the engaged and married, as well as individuals for depression, anxiety, grieving, separation, divorce and other personal problems. The cost is a $10.00 donation per session. Volunteer Tutors Needed The Congregation of St. Joseph of La Grange Park is in need of volunteers for its Adult Literacy Program, School on Wheels. Tutors are needed to teach one hour or so per week from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm or eve-nings from 3:00 to 8:00 pm in Cicero, Hodgkins, Woodridge or Westmont or in Lombard and Summit in the morning. A two-day training will be provided from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 22nd an on Saturday, August 23rd from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Volunteers must attend both training days. Read Any Good Books Lately?

We are planning a lending li-brary here at St. Al’s. It will be located in the small anteroom at the entrance to the Chapel. It will be a place where you can select a book or two, take them home to read, or sit and relax there for a time. We have already started stocking books, but we could use a few more. We are looking for religious/faith-based books, the classics and biographies. If you have any books in these categories that you are willing to donate, you can drop them off at the Parish Office and they will become part of our “library.” The library will open soon on Tuesdays, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Charity Golf Outing The Lemont Knights of Colum-bus invite you to participate in a Charity Golf Outing to be held on Friday, August 15th at the Woodbine Country Club on 151st Street, one mile west of Parker Road. The $110.00 per person
