In place of my article, I would like to present some highlights of Fr. Richard Feller’s life.
God Bless,
Fr. Feller was born in Chicago, on May 11, 1927. He attended St. Matthias Elementary School and
Quigley Preparatory Seminary. After graduating from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein
Seminary, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees, he was ordained a priest on
May 1, 1953. He obtained a Masters in Psychology from Loyola University in 1969.
His first assignment was as associate pastor at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago, (1953-1958). He
served as an associate at St. Colette in Rolling Meadows (1958-64), Christ the King in Chicago (1964-1968)
and St. Alphonsus, Prospect Heights (1968-1973). He was associate pastor of St. Ita Parish in Chicago from
1973-1976 and then was appointed pastor. In 1988, he became pastor of Holy Ghost Parish in South
Holland, serving there until he retired in 1997. During retirement, he assisted at St. Eugene Parish in
Chicago.
Beloved by those who knew him, Fr. Feller is remembered for his generous service on behalf of the
Church and the people of God for 62 years of priestly ministry. He loved being a priest and his well-prepared
homilies reflected his love of Christ and his deep appreciation for the gifts of the Spirit. He was a strong
proponent of Catholic education and over the years served in other capacities for the Archdiocese, including
as a counselor for Catholic Charities.
He was gracious, kind and thoughtful whether he’d known someone for ages or only a short time. In
his concern for others, he often sent cards for various occasions or quick notes to let people know he was
thinking of them. Concern for the vulnerable was also a hallmark of his ministry, especially his commitment to
visiting the sick and dying, to the pro-life movement, to justice for the poor, to men and women religious at the
Guest House, and to numerous other charities. His humility, wry sense of humor, and devotion to helping
others endeared him to his parishioners, family and friends alike.

THANKSGIVING The word “thanksgiving” most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper as “food we call ‘thanksgiving’” (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self-congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The “thanksgiving” that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone. While the food of Christ’s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord’s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against the self-righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in remembrance of him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2015 THRU JUNE 30, 2016 The calendar year for the use of parish facili-ties by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be una-vailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2015 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2016. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2015 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2015-16 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before finalizing plans for events.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It has been said that the Church breathes with two lungs, East and West. Some of our family treas-ures are in the East, and it is interesting to consider how liturgical families developed around differing customs. Centuries before Christ, after the young girl was given to her husband by her father, the spouses were crowned. Christians retained that cus-tom, keeping the wedding in the home, and some-times inviting a visiting priest or bishop to put the crowns on their heads. By the fourth century, the crowns were seen not as royal crowns, but as the crowns of victory worn by martyrs. The crowns have nothing to do with being “king and queen for a day,” but rather speak of the sacrifice of love poured out fully. There are no vows exchanged at all, but the crowning is followed by a joyful dance by the priest and couple around the Gospel book. Unlike Roman law, which saw the wedding rites as optional, East-ern practice did not recognize a marriage that had not been blessed. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to
God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish
community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and
empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-
tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our
participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the
needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-
ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
