A Catholic congregation in Haskell county was organized in the 1930’s. Permission was granted in 1937 to begin offering mass in Satanta. Formerly St. Timothy, St. Alphonsus became the patron of the Satanta parish at the request of donors to the Catholic Extension Society who contributed generously to the construction of the new church, our current location. Dedicated November 23, 1969 by Bishop Marion F. Forst.

WISDOM We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a femi-nine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her. In today's Gos-pel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their re-sources, use them prudently, and mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wisdom is to all who simply and hon-estly seek it. Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wis-dom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror. Our faith in Jesus' resurrection tells us we will all one day rise to new life in Christ.

LA SABIDURÍA Nuestra tema de hoy es la sabiduría. La primera lectura del Libro de la Sabiduría presenta este valioso regalo como un espíritu femenino, una virtud muy deseable buscada por muchos y posible, por la gracia de Dios, para todos los que la buscan. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús relata una parábola para ilustrar de una manera práctica y concreta qué es la sabiduría. Los sabios conservan sus recursos, los usan prudentemente, con atención al paso del tiempo. Los tontos, por otro lado, por no planear su futuro, quedarán en la oscuridad. Las dos lecturas indican lo accesible que es la sabiduría a todos los que la buscan de manera sencilla y sincera. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We had sixteen hundred years' experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the Sunday assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the "dialogue Mass," so the focus was on train-ing little children to recite or sing in Latin. The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt "untraditional." Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which chil-dren have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrust-ed to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer.

En 1682 unos negociantes encontraron una caja abandonada en una playa al sur de El Salvador. Como no pudieron abrirla decidieron llevársela al pueblito de San Miguel para conseguir con qué abrirla. March for Life-Topeka 2018 The Pro-Life Pilgrimage to Topeka will be held Monday, January 22, 2018. This is open to High School and College-age. The bus will depart from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe parking lot at approximately 5:30am and will return at 10pm. Cost is just $35 per person. The day will include Mass at the Topeka Performing Arts Center, the March to the Capitol, rally, lunch and tours of the Capitol. There will be a dinner stop in Salina on the way home. Know Your Rights Workshop

Everyone has rights, regardless of immigration status. Saint Francis Community Services and the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City are hosting three "Know Your Rights" Workshops. Healing Retreat Rose Sweet, Catholic author and speaker, will be present-ing a healing retreat for the divorced, widowed and single, December 1-3 at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita. Saint Hugh of Lincoln

Hugh of Lincoln was the son of William, Lord of Avalon. He was born at Avalon Castle in Burgundy and was raised and educated at a convent at Villard-Benoit after his mother died when he was eight. He was professed at fifteen, ordained a deacon at nineteen, and was made prior of a monastery at Saint-Maxim. While visit-ing the Grande Chartreuse with his priorin 1160. It was then he decided to become a Carthusian there and was ordained. After ten years, he was named procuratorand in 1175 became Abbot of the first Carthusian monastery in England. This had been built by King Henry II as part

of his penance for the murder of Thomas Becket.

His reputation for holiness and sanctity spread all over England and attracted many to the monastery. He admonished Henry for keeping Sees vacant to enrich the royal coffers. Income from the vacant Sees went to the royal treasury. He was then named bishop of the eighteen year old vacant See of Lincoln in 1186 - a post he accept-ed only when ordered to do so by the prior of the Grande Chartreuse. Hugh quickly restored clerical discipline, labored to restore religion to the diocese, and became known for his wisdom and justice. He was one of the leaders in denouncing the persecution of the Jews that swept England, 1190-91, repeatedly facing down armed mobs and making them release their victims. He went on a diplomatic mission to France for King John in 1199, visiting the Grande Chartreuse, Clu-ny, and Citeaux, and returned from the trip in poor health. A few months later, while attending a national council in London, he was stricken and died two months later at the Old Temple in London on November 16. He was canonized twenty years later, in 1220, the first Carthusian to be so honored. Feastday: November 17 Patron of sick children, sick people, shoemakers, and swans
