Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This past weekend I baptized four babies and welcomed them into the Catholic Church, the community of faith. There was a great number of people in attendance to witness the baptism and join with the parents and godparents in celebration. It truly was joyous, and people sincerely prayed along and participated as best they could. Of course the parents were excited along with the grandparents and other family members. Personally, I believe it is important for Catholics to attend a baptism from time to time. Certainly it is something important we do for our children. For most Christian people there is something that seems to click inside that motivates parents and families to set the date and present their children in church for the ceremony. Some parents may not understand fully the purpose and the reason for the ritual washing in water and signing with oil. It’s just more of that “churchy” stuff that seems irrelevant to our daily lives. Really, in a technological and science blessed world do we need all this? Agnostics really try to pull the rug from under any religious practices, claiming they hold us back and are simply remnants of medieval fears and ignorance. Can we really live without God? Our faith tells us “no.” Even those who deny the need of faith and ignore God completely still need God to exist. And that is what we say in our baptismal ceremony: not only that we need God, but we need God to show us the purpose of why we exist at all. Baptism is a washing from the effects of sin, and sin tells us we can do it all ourselves. Sin separates, putting barriers between us. So baptism says no to separation and calls us into relationship – with God and God’s people, the Church. We know that our relationships exist on many different levels. They have to do with how we understand ourselves and each other, what we do together, but they also form us for better or for worse. All the people joined together in one ceremony last weekend shared many relationships. They were there for a purpose, called together by their families. But as the ceremony unfolded, whether they perceived it or not, the bond between all of us was a sharing in the Holy. God was present reminding us of our relationship in love with God and the call to love each other. God called each of the four babies his “beloved” and sealed each one with the gift of God’s own Spirit. Did each person understand that? Mostly likely, they did not. But, nevertheless, God was at work. God’s grace was available not only to the babies and parents, but to each one of us. The power of the sacrament, when we take a moment to reflect on it, can lead us to begin to identify moments of grace, moments of encounter with Love each and every day. We easily forget that baptism is a beginning, an Initiation into relationship. Just as the parents and their children are bonded together into ongoing relationships, so are we with our God. And just as each member of the family depends on the others, we depend on each other to help us recognize the signs of God’s love in our daily lives. We do need each other and the gift of faith we share in common. This Sunday we welcome John Hoang a seminarian from the Diocese of San Jose, California. John is presently studying theology at St. Mary of the Lake University in Mundelein. He comes to share with us his own call to priesthood which can be traced back to his own baptism. As he shares his story, perhaps other young people will feel the same grace that John felt to respond to God through the call to priesthood or religious life. Please pray for all our seminarians and everyone who is contemplating a religious vocation.
