Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend a day at the Notre Dame program entitled, “ND – Vision.” ND – Vision is a week long program directed to high school students with the goal of empowering them to live their Catholic faith. The teens are immersed in activities each day that open doors in their minds as well as their hearts to seeing their faith as a gift from God, a gift that enables them to know themselves better and to trust their own goodness. Through the talks, activities, group sharing, and prayer, the teens have a golden opportunity to know themselves better, and to trust that they can have a powerful influence on others around them. I was privileged to listen in on three witness talks that were so simple in nature, but yet had the capacity to teach valuable truths. After each talk I would have liked to personally thank each teen for having the courage to share a part of themselves with over two hundred other teens. These teens had gained insights that could help any other teen to look more deeply at their lives to discover God’s presence and love for them. Common Gospel passages were not only proclaimed, but acted out by the teens with music added to bring the story to life. It was incredibly engaging. But the best part of it all, was that the teens themselves did the proclaiming, acting, and singing. The lessons were often simple – the importance of community and fellowship – but I could feel the impact of the message and its relevance for our world today. I attended the conference on the invitation of our new Youth Minister, Kathy McGourty. Kathy accompanied four teens from St. Cecilia Parish. The hope is that these teens will bring the story of ND – Vision back to St. Cecilia, and they will be able to share the message with others. Next summer we will have teens from St. Al’s in attendance. Also, in today’s bulletin, Kathy has pictures from this summer’s teen mission trip to Omaha, Nebraska. Kathy accompanied six teens, four from St. Cecilia and two of our own, Anna Nars (Lisa’s daughter) and Kayla Pietro (Mary’s daughter). These teens experienced several opportunities of helping on an Indian reservation outside of Omaha. For them, it was an invaluable opportunity to be with those in need and to make a difference. Whenever we reach outside of our cultural comfort zone we will be effected. How wonderful to know that these teens have been touched in this way by giving of themselves to others, stretching themselves beyond fears and unknowns. I wanted to highlight these two stories, first of all because they concern teens in action doing incredible good. And secondly, because it’s what Jesus is saying in today’s Gospel. Jesus came as a servant to help those in need which includes everyone. He recognized the need to love, show mercy and compassion, and walk with each other in our life journey. But He also challenges us to do the same. We are the servants whom the Master has put in charge of the household. His Spirit lives in us, but is meant not only for us, but for the world. Each day we make choices to love and serve, or to keep it to myself and ignore those around me. It’s in the serving that we meet Jesus and come to know who we really are in God’s eyes.
