Father, They Are Your Gift To Me – In the creation story, we are told that God made human beings “in His image.” This
doesn’t mean that we are exact clones or identical twins of God, but rather that each of us, in light of our unique gifts and characteristics, are created to reflect the vibrant life and loving face of God to oth-
ers. God’s hand in our lives doesn’t end in creating us. Throughout our lives, God gives us purpose and fills us with the gifts we need to fulfill that purpose. The challenge for us is to know ourselves as God knows us, as his gifts in the world to share his light and life with others. Through prayer and in humil-ity we are invited to see clearly God’s will for our lives and all he has provided for us so that his will and our lives may be complete. God hasn’t randomly or thoughtlessly placed us in this world to create a reality for ourselves. He has sent us into the world with a specific task in mind that we might love others and build up his kingdom in the Church, making it ever more Alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Our Friends at McDonald Presbyterian Church are asking us to participate in their “MPC Summer Service Week” July 22 – July 28. During this week, teams of Teen and Adult volunteers will offer free home repairs for McDonald homeowners in need. The teams aim to do basic home repair projects and are adult-supervised. To volunteer, please contact Sharon Serratore at 724-926-2984.

The Living Word Chapter 17 of John’s Gospel which is proclaimed to-
day, contains Jesus’ prayer to God for His chosen apostles. In it, Jesus asks His Father to look after them, protect them, and make them one, as He and the Father are one. Jesus con-cludes this prayer with a petition for all future disciples who hear the Word from these apostles and then choose to follow Him. This would include not only the members of the early Church, but also the Church of today - you and me. “Holy Fa-ther, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one…” This oneness that Jesus is praying for is the unity of love that exists between God the Father and his Son, Jesus.
How vastly different our world would be if Christians would “all be one” and love others in the manner that Jesus taught us to love. Modern day followers appear to grasp the concept of “love thy neighbor,” but we struggle to make this love a reality. Unfortunately, the ways of the world and secular-ism often shape our personal values tending to lead us into selfishness and a competition for power with those around us. Oftentimes we believe that the smarter, wealthier, or more im-portant we are, the more power we possess. Jesus, however, revealed to us the true nature of God from which this love flows. Our God is a humble God who emptied himself to join humanity as a servant who washed the feet of His apostles, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was put to death on a cross for our salvation.
In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus reminds us that we are capable of being one with Him and the Father. We are even capable of selfless, unconditional loving as He loved. This prayer was offered at the Last Supper, the night that Je-sus gave us the gift of the Eucharist to ensure that He would always be in communion with all disciples in both mind and heart. By sharing this intimate union with Jesus, we join in un-ion with the Father for Jesus prayed, “…as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us…”
Perhaps today is the time to put aside our worldly ways and become one with Jesus in mind and heart - time to allow the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist to transform us into authentic followers. Perhaps it is time to offer our prayer to Jesus and the Father as we strive to live out our baptismal call. Perhaps it is time to witness to the love of God making the call to discipleship our priority. Perhaps it is time to make un-conditional love a visible sign to the world.
What virtue in your life needs strengthened - compas-sion, responsibility, honesty, restraint, loyalty, self-discipline, courage, sense of duty?
How can strengthening this virtue form you as a better disciple?
