Activity: Assisted Preparation for 2013 CIOMP-OSA Summer
Session
From the day of May6th
, 2013, our chapter assisted OSA-students chapter
held a serious of meetings to prepare for the Summer Session, we
discussed several things. First, the volunteers, we need about 40
volunteers who would serve the foreign guests during the session, and
some would prepare the coffee break, and so on. Second, we discussed
the agenda of the session and the accommodation issues for our
honorable guests. Third, we designed uniforms for our volunteers and the
souvenirs for our honorable guests. The meetings continued for a week,
which ensured the session would be smoothly carried out. Meanwhile, we
invited the past OSA president Hanyi Fu who successfully host
IONS-Asia-3 conference in 2012 as our consultant. With the help of him,
we get a lot of precious suggestions and experiences to help us preparing
for the coming session.

Activity: CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter Journey
June 2th, 2013, our CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter, cooperating with
CIOMP OSA Student Chapter, organized a very meaningful journey to
the Shuangyang City. At 8:00, we got on the bus to start our journey. In
the bus, we chatted with each other happily and sang pop-music together.
After about an hour and a half, we arrived at Diaoshui Lake. Diaoshui
Lake is located in the southeast of Changchun City. It has the highest
altitude in Changchun City, and it is famous for the karst cave and the ice
cave.
With our guide’s interpretation, we toured the whole attractions. Then we
went to the place named New Socialist Countryside where the students
had dinner together. All the students not only experienced the beautiful
landscape, but also rural culture. What a wonderful night! About 3 hours
later, we went back to our institute.

Activity: Seminar Report
In the evening of June 20th, 2013, our chapter held the seminar report in
the graduate teaching building room 307. Dr. Liu Jiagen, an excellent
PhD student in CIOMP, gave us a wonderful leture named double tapered
optical fiber modified by nanosphere. Through his description, we
learned the virtues of nanosphere modification. First, the range of the
refractive index sensing is widen and the sensitivity of it is improved by
this method. Second, when the refractive index is low, the miescattering
of the nanosphere is dominant. At this point, the scattering efficiency of
the nanosphere decreases with the increase of the external refractive
index. Thus the intensity of the output light of the optical fiber increases
with the increase of the refractive index. Third, when the refractive index
is high, the sensitivity is significantly improved by the cooperation of the
miescattering of the nanosphere and the transmission characteristic of the
double tapered optical fiber. The lecture lasted nearly an hour and a half.

Activity: Assisted OSA chapter to open 2013 CIOMP Summer
Session
CIOMP Summer Session, jointly hosted by Changchun Institute of Optics,
Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CIOMP),
the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the OSA/SPIE student chapter
in CIOMP, opened on August 4, 2013 at the auditorium on R&D
building's first floor in CIOMP. The conference theme is Optical
Engineering, Design and Manufacturing. The conference invited nine
experts from five different countries, including China, America, Australia,
France and Spain, to give lectures to the students. They are the vice
president of CIOMP Zhang Xuejun, Pro. Wang Yongtian of the Beijing
Institute of Technology, Pro. James C. Wyant of the University of Arizona,
Pro. Jannick P. Rolland of the University of Rochester, Dr. Qiao Jie of the
University of Rochester, Dr. Kevin P. Thompson of Synopsys Company
of America, Dr. G.W. Forbes of QED Technologies Company of Australia,
Pro. Pierre Chavel of Institute of optics of France and Pro. Juan C.
Miñano of Universidad Complutense de Madrid, respectively. At the
meantime, we also magnetized 120 students who come from 9 countries
including America, France, Spain and Italy.
The vice president of CIOMP Zhang Xuejun expressed the warm
welcome on behalf of CIOMP and made the opening statement. Pro.
James C. Wyant gave a lecture on behalf of OSA. In his statement, he
highly praised us for our preparatory work of this session. The next week,
the students got a good chance to communicate and study with the
experts.

Activity: The First Author Pulpit
The First Author Pulpit, jointly hosted by the SPIE/OSA student chapter
in CIOMP and the Student Union of CIOMP, opened on September 12th
,
2013 in the graduate teaching building room 502.
In the afternoon, we invited Editor Zhang Guang to give the SPIE/OSA
Chapter students and other students a wonderful report about that how to
contribute to SCI and EI periodicals successfully. Firstly, he introduced
five periodicals of CIOMP, including Chinese Journal of Luminescence,
Optics and Precision Engineering, Chinese Journal of Liquid Crystals and
Displays, Chinese Optics and Light, respectively. Secondly, he stated the
contents of the initial review in detail: ① formal examination, ②
Applicability to review, ③ The academic quality of preliminary
examination, ④ Regulatory review. Finally, Editor Zhang narrated to us
the method of how to write a good abstract for our paper: a good abstract
should include purpose, methods, results and conclusions. Purpose is why
you do this work, methods is the way you solve the problem, results is the
phenomenon you observed in your experiments and conclusions the
summing up you made from the results.
Through Editor Zhang’ lecture, we learn much knowledge about
contribution. I think that this lecture will be very helpful for us to
contribute to SCI and EI periodicals.

Activity: Optics+Photonics International Exchange
The SPIE Student Leadership Conference brings together chapter officers
from around the globe each year to network amongst their peers and to
learn more about successful chapter management. Our president Wang
Xun attended the meeting and learned a lot of experiences.

Activity: Seminar Report
In the evening of November 14th
, 2013, our chapter held the seminar
report in the graduate teaching building room 307. Not only our chapter
members attended the meeting, but some other students also came to join
the lecture. The role we invented is Huang Wenbin. He is an excellent
PhD student in CIOMP. The topic of his report is how to write an
excellent paper during our PhD's studies. First, we need to know the latest
international development of our research; then according to the
information we knew, we can define the research direction. Second, do
experiments and characterize. Third, analyze the experimental data and
define the structure of your paper. At last, it should be noted that the
figures in your paper must be clear and the abstract is also very important.
Through learning the lecture, we got much knowledge about writing an
excellent paper.

Activity: Seminar Report
In the evening of November 14th
, 2013, CIOMP SPIE/OSA Student
Chapter held our seminar report in the graduate teaching building room
307. Wang Lianlian, an excellent PhD student in CIOMP, gave us an
excellent lecture named Learning Experience in Laboratory. Firstly, when
we start to do experiment, we should know about our laboratory,
including experimental conditions, test conditions, the latest international
development of our research, and so on. All of them can be learned from
our upperclassman. Secondly, learn how to operate the laboratory
equipment. Thirdly, experiment with your own ideas.
I think Dr Wang’s lecture is very useful for the freshmen of the
laboratory.

Activity: CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter Christmas Dinner
In the evening of December 24th
, 2013, our CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter
together with CIOMP OSA Student Chapter, gathered for dinner to
celebrate Christmas in Shengjing Buffet.
We assembled in front of Graduate Teaching Building at 16:30. We said
“Merry Christmas” to each other when we met. Surround us was the
cheerful and peaceful atmosphere. Then we got on the bus, and we
chatted with each other happily. After half an hour, we arrived at the
Shengjing Buffet. How exciting! There were plenty of kinds of delicious
food and we could help ourselves. Meanwhile, we could have barbecue
with soft music. It was time for us to show our barbecue talent and enjoy
the fun time together. After we were full, we played board games, told
jokes and take photos together.

Activity: Prepare to Recruitment
On the evening of February 8th
, 2014, the main officials of our Student
Chapter held a meeting in graduate teaching building. In the important
meeting, the existing problems about recruitment were solved after a
heated discussion. Because the time of registration for the freshmen was
postponed to March, the recruitment is late compared with ever. The

poster for recruitment was designed. We prepared to attract some new
students who was good at English and had passion in activities joining in
our SPIE Chapter. We hope that our Student Chapter will be better and
the members will be more responsible for the chapter.

Activity: The First Author Pulpit
The First Author Pulpit, jointly hosted by the SPIE/OSA student chapter
in CIOMP and the Student Union of CIOMP, opened on February 17th

2014 in the graduate teaching building room 502.
In the afternoon, we invited Editor Li Shujun to give the SPIE/OSA
Chapter students and other students a wonderful report about the notes of
scientific paper writing. First of all, the title of your paper should
summarize the most important information of your paper briefly. Second,
the abstract should include the purpose of your paper, the theory you
utilized in your work and the conclusions you got. Third, the main body
usually include introduction, materials and methods, results and
discussion and conclusion. Finally, the figures and the chart in your paper
should be clear and pellucid.

Activity: 2014-2015 Recruitment Starts
On March 4th, 2014, our recruitment presentation was performed at the
Graduate Teaching Building, together with CIOMP OSA Student Chapter.
The President of CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter Gao Zhenyu and the
President of CIOMP OSA Student Chapter Xiang Guotao introduced both
SPIE and OSA respectively to freshmen of CIOMP. What they introduced
included the Student Chapters, membership benefits, a review of our
activities in the past few years and planned activities of the coming year.
What’s more, they gave us the association incentives，some students who
had performance well and done well in their academic work would be
awarded with bonus. Then, the audience asked questions about the two
chapters to the two presidents. The two presidents gave their answers in
details.
At the end of recruitment, students who were interested in the chapters
filled the forms to apply for SPIE/OSA membership.

Activity: The first meeting of our new members
On March 24th
, 2014，our chapter held our first meeting of all the
members in the graduate teaching building room 307.
Our new members joined in our chapter, they made self introduction to
each other, and they filled out a formal form about the registration of the
association, and payed the membership dues of next year. The total
enrolled number of this year is 21. The SPIE Student Chapter president
Zhenyu Gao announced membership benefits and chapter responsibilities.
He suggested our members to join the activities as much as we can. Our
members realized that we could not only improve our ability and
knowledge during the process, but also enlarged our chapter’s reputation.
As a member in this chapter, we should benefit ourselves of knowledge
and strengthen our chapter as well. At last he introduced the plan of next
year. We enhanced the academic atmosphere in our institute, such as
academic lectures, academic salon. It included the seminar report, the
academic conferences in China and the regular party and so on.
