1 2019 SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report Prepared by: Xiaohui Xu President Sarah Chowdhury Treasurer Executive Summary: The Purdue Univ Chapter was established on 27 October 2014. We hold monthly meetings and most activities on the main campus of Purdue Univ. The purpose of the Purdue Univ. Chapter is to promote the discipline of Optical Science and Engineering through the organized effort of this group in study, research, and discussion; to disseminate knowledge of the field of Optical Engineering; and to further the professional development of the students. The Chapter shall promote membership in SPIE by acquainting the student body with the ideas, purposes, and objectives of SPIE. This year, our chapter organized the “Women in Optics” program featured a forum comprising women in various stages in their research journey. The event was well attended and there was an interactive discussion between the panelist and the audience. And we won the 2019 WiO activity grant! One of the biggest challenges that our chapter faced this year has been the organization and arrangement of a conference at a larger scale that involved more than 100 participants. Due to the multiple seminar sessions and poster presentations, we found it difficult to manage with our limited organizing committee. Learning from this, we will be more prepared for big conference management in the future by getting support from more chapter members. Participants: ~100 students (most of them are graduate students and postdocs), 15 faculty members. Cost: the cost was covered by NSAC, while SPIE Chapter helps to arrange the conference. This one-day conference was held together by OSA chapter, SPIE chapter and Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) at Purdue University, and our chapter was heavily involved in the organization of the conference. The conference featured invited speakers, consisting of eminent lecturers in the field of optics, electronics and photonics. The event was interactive and stimulated research conversations between students from different disciplines. There was also a poster exhibition after the seminar talks, and the best poster was voted. This joint conference has turned out to be a great success in prompting interdisciplinary research activities, and we want to host a similar conference with even higher impact in the following year.

Treasurer’s Report [This section should be completed by the chapter treasurer and based off of accounting done throughout the year. Things that are necessary include a starting balance, any income in the year with descriptions, any expenses during the year with descriptions, and an ending balance. Table formats work best. You may choose to track expenses in Excel in order to use formula functions. Preference is in chronological order of expense. Please adapt format to meet your chapter’s needs. Below is an example of the minimum requirements. If your chapter tracks expenses in local currency, please include a column for USD conversions using the date of reporting as the date of conversion. If your chapter has anticipated expenses that will occur after the report is submitted, indicate the anticipated amounts here.]

*Anticipated funding amounts based on chapter budget and last year’s costs/incomes. Conclusions and Recommendations This year we had an opportunity to organize an event with a purpose of holding a panel discussion with some leading women engineers, scientists and researchers in the field of optics and photonics. It was a successful event where we addressed the challenges that women face. This also gave the students an overview of the work environment, research opportunities and obstacles. We hope to organize similar events in the future with a broadened sphere of audience. The editor of Nature Physics, Luke Fleet ([email protected]) said that he is interested in visiting Purdue University in the spring of 2020. As SPIE is closely related to optics as well as physics, we highly recommend holding Luke’s visit in the spring.
