Detailed Chapter Activities Since Last Report 1. In May 16, 2006, we have invited Dr. Ye Yin to give us a talk about Effect of Dielectric Relaxation on Nematic Liquid Crystal Switching. Around 10 students from Kent State student chapter attended this seminar.

2. Our student chapter received chapter fund for regular chapter activities and travel fund in April. The travel fund will be used for travel expense of members who will attend the 2006 SPIE annual meeting early August in San Diego. 3. We did field research on rainbow and investigated the optical properties of rainbow. Two members of our chapter went to Niagara Falls and performed advanced observation of rainbow under polarizer. The polarization of rainbow was determined to be along the tangent line of the rainbow curve at every single point.

We attended the Great Lakes Photonics Symposium on June 12-16, 2006 at Dayton convention center in Dayton. This Conference provides a forum to promote optics and photonics in the Great Lakes area. 10 focused conferences was planned to offer a comprehensive symposium. During the conference, Kent State SPIE student chapter have done a series of activities: 1) On June 12, we attend the SPIE student chapter meeting of great lake area. President Fenghua Li did a presentation to explain the activities among the Kent State student chapter.

Details of Activities Planned for Future We will actively maintain our chapter’s good standing, advertising members’ academic research strength, attract more new students into members and broaden the network of collaborations and communications. The following is a brief list of planed activities:

1. We plan to use the Visiting Lecturer Program of SPIE and invite a lecturer from University of Arizona to do a lecture of optical design. The fund will be covered from SPIE.

2. Continue the extensive collaboration with University of Dayton, Pennsylvania State University and Notre Dame University’s SPIE student chapters

3. We are planning an educational tour for local high school in collaboration with the Great Lake SPIE Chapter.

4. Promote academic program in the fields of Optics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Applications of Liquid Crystals, especially the Graduate Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary program at Liquid Crystal Institute. We will present posters during the annual meeting exhibitions in San Diego.

5. Attracting undergraduate students from Physics and Chemistry by giving seminars, tours and interactive communications.

6. Actively participate in conferences in the fields of Optics, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Applications of Liquid Crystals.

7. Maintain close relations, interchange experience and plan common activities with other SPIE chapters around the world. Especially during the annual meeting, it is a great opportunity to build relationship for future collaboration.

8. Apply for SPIE grants and scholarships available to chapter and individual chapter members to support travel and research activities. The institutes fund is our major goal this year.
